We’ve known for some time that Marvel has been interested in producing a Doctor Strange movie. At one point, they considered Johnny Depp for the titular role, but that didn’t pan out. We even have our own list of potential candidates.

Today, the first big announcement for the film occurred – Scott Derrickson (Sinister), who had previously been rumored to be on the director shortlist,  confirmed that he’d be helming the film, beating out Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) and Mark Andrews (Brave) for the job.

And while that was all well in good, it wasn’t the only bit of Doctor Strange news for today. Tucked inside a report from Badass Digest was a rumor that Marvel is – or was – interested in casting Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as Doctor Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme.

From Badass:

I have also heard that Marvel likes (or liked, I don’t know what the current status of this is) Jared Leto for Stephen Strange.

Obviously, there’s no telling whether or not this rumor is true, so let’s keep that in mind as we analyze it. And even if it is true, it’s very well possible that this is something akin to the Johnny Depp news – yes, Marvel was interested in him at one point, but for whatever reason, it’s not happening now.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way – does Academy Award winner Jared Leto seem like a good fit for Doctor Strange? Could he be cast in the role? Should he?

Leto certainly isn’t someone most people would expect to be associated with Stephen Strange. Strange is mature and sophisticated, not unlike Sherlock Holmes. Leto is a rock star, he’s a pretty boy, and he has a soft voice. At the same time, he is – as already stated – an Academy Award winner, and has proven he’s a capable actor in films like Requiem for a Dream. He’s also highly capable of growing the prerequisite Stephen Strange facial hair.

I’ve written before about how similar Doctor Strange and Iron Man are as characters. There’s the aforementioned facial hair, the arrogance, the jerkiness, the traumatic experience that led them to become more righteous human beings, etc.

Perhaps this is an indication that Marvel is trying to find an anti-Tony Stark to distinguish between the two characters. After all, Leto is perhaps the polar opposite of Robert Downey Jr. in terms of acting styles. If this rumor is true.

I have to say that one of the more interesting fan suggestions for actors to play Strange (in my opinion) is Pedro Pascal, the man who plays Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones. So if this Leto business turns out to be just a rumor or old news – hey Marvel, check out Pascal.

What say you, Screen Ranters? Do you believe this Jared Leto rumor? Do you like Leto for Doctor Strange? Drop us a line in the comments.

Doctor Strangeis currently in development and is expected to be released in Marvel’s Phase Three.
