doctor who premier Doctor Who: New Season 5 Trailers & Photos; Season 6 Confirmed

With the fifth season premiere of Doctor Who less than a month away and the U.S. debut at WonderCon next weekend, BBC America has released what looks to be the final trailer we’ll be seeing for Doctor Who season 5.

If that’s not good enough, the BBC has also released their final trailer, with different scenes. Plus, there’s photos from the first episode as well as confirmation on what we all knew was coming – a 6th season.

While the two trailers from BBC and BBC America have some overlapping imagery, for the most part they’re different. The BBC trailer is narrated by the new companion, Amy Pond, while BBC America has chosen The Doctor himself to do the voice-over. The UK trailer gives a glimpse of what our previously posted set photos showed – filming at Stonehenge – while the U.S. trailer has a wonderful shot of the new Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, which we had previously reported on.

I could go on about the differences between the two trailers, but I think it would be easier to just show you. Plus, it’ll save me from having to write it all out and ultimately sounding like a more obsessive Doctor Who fanatic than usual.

Check out the trailers below.

Season 5 Premiere Photos

Even though they’re not the most revealing photos, we get to take a look at where the TARDIS finally lands after crashing through time and space in David Tennant’s series 4 finale “The End of Time”, as well as what looks to be the events that lead to The Doctor and Amy’s first interaction. As a bonus, we find out what kind of cell phone The Doctor prefers.

A Sixth Season In 2011

There’s no need to act surprised, we all knew this was coming, considering Neil Gaiman has said that he’s slated to write an episode in sixth season, but we’ve never had an official confirmation – until now. Doctor Who executive producer, Piers Wenger, confirmed that not only has the series been picked up for a 6th season (32nd including the past incarnations), but that Matt Smith will for sure be returning as The Doctor.

Hopefully, viewers will enjoy his performance as the dual-heart time traveler because he’s now in it for the long haul. With production already finished for the fifth season, the cast and crew begin filming the Christmas special in July.

Catch the fifth season of Doctor Who when it premiers April 3 on BBC One (UK),  April 17 on BBC America (U.S.) and April 18 on ABC (Australia).

  1. Can't view the BBC America trailer, but the UK one looked interesting: glimpse of a new more ornate TARDIS interior, the smell of an olive-drab Dalek in the morning, WWII fighters vs a Dalek saucer…in space, heftier sonic screwdriver, Matt Smith being serious. I'm still neutral/quietly optimistic.

  2. The BBC America trailers – particularly the long version, of course – actually reveal a bit more. There's more dialogue, with one line from River Song herself, and even a scene with the new Doctor expelling radiation energy. For some reason, however, only the UK trailer has the VERY exciting glimpse of the Cybermen.

  3. I'm a little more excited for this. The trailer made it seem like Matt Smith is owning this role. The last thing anyone wants is a David Tennant wannbe although I am hoping for a line.

When the switch was made from Eccleston to Tennant there was a line in “The Christmas Invaison,” possibly the last line in the special, where he said 'Fantastic.' I'd like a little salute to Tennant that way from Smith in the 5th season opener.

  4. April 3rd you mean in the UK….(that's where Wikipedia get's you!)

Anyways Smith is gonna suck because he's not David Tenannt.

(Joke – I hope he's at least half as good as Tenannt!)

  5. It wasn't Wikipedia, but me assuming that Easter 2010 meant Easter 2010, which is April 4.

Either way, that's for the heads up.

  6. I remain unconvinced, the US trailer is way better than any of the uk ones shown so far, but Smith just doesnt seem right to me. The trailer gives me hope that it might at least be good fun.

Surely going ahead with another season already is premature, what if the public dont warm to this new Doctor or companion? Then we're stuck with them for two years!

  7. Exciting glimpse of a Cyberman? More like disappointing, same enemies every season, Daleks and Cybermen, complete lack of imagination. Also that Cyberman isnt quite real, it is from the stonehenge sequence in the season finale, but I dont feel right to spoil it.

  8. I loved David Tennant, but I have loved all the Doctors (except for the 7th and 8th ones – they were just annoying) and every time the Doctor regenerates I immediately dislike the new one simply because they're not the old one. David Tennant was fantastic and the best Doctor (sorry Tom Baker) but Im trying to be open mined about Smith. I hate the new sonic screwdriver and the inside of the TARDIS better be amazing to make up with the outside :P I jsut dont like that blue.
    Cant wait for April 18th!

  9. I absolutly love matt smith as the dr I loved david tarent too they both have the drive and energy matt is really owning the part he is fantastic as doctor who I cannot wait till season 6

  10. Well season 5 was great but is a new season in the works cant get enough of the rebirth of dr who
