Do we really need another 9/11 movie?

Aug 3, 2004 by

According to the UK Guardian, yet another movie about the events of 9/11 is going to be made, this time produced by Danny DeVito. From the article at the link below it seems as if it will be a story of heroism instead of politics, taken from the perspective of two New York police officers.

It will not be a documentary since it will be scripted, but I’m sure it will be prefaced by the annoying “Based on a true story” when it finally appears on-screen.

My question is: Do we really need another movie about the events of that terrible day? There have been plenty of in-depth programs on various cable channels covering this from every possible angle.

This is really starting to smell like nothing more than opportunism and the chance to make money from this tragedy. You want to convince me otherwise? Have the proceeds from any upcoming (or currently playing) films about 9/11 go to a charity that supports the families left behind.

  1. Finally a Holywood movie about 9/11! What has taken so long?! I just hope it leaves the audience feeling uplifted and positive about America winning this war. Having suffered through ‘The Alamo’ and ‘The Last Samurai’, this would be a welcome change.

  2. First: You actually saw The Alamo? Wow.

Second: I’m suprised you didn’t like The Last Samurai, I really enjoyed it.

Third: What do either of these have to do with a 9/11 movie?

Fourth: You are being sarcastic, right? :-)

  3. Even Michael Moore had enough common sense to minimize the amount of 9/11 footage shown in Fahrenheit 9/11. People have no need to see a movie like this, fictional or not. It won’t be cathartic for anyone, and the entertainment value will be non-existent since it’s based (however loosely) on actual events. I’ll be surprised if this ever makes it to theaters, let alone ends up being a hit.

  4. Seems Hollywood had taken an unwritten oath on Sept.12th to NOT make a movie about 9/11. My thought then was, “Yeah, we’ll see how serious they are in about 2 years”.

I doubt this will get made. Danny DeVito? Why him? I could see Rob Reiner trying to pull off something like this, but not DeVito.

Why Reiner you ask? Something about him seems very seedy. His intents and his results end up being two different things.

  5. Why wouldn’t a 9/11 movie be good?! Isn’t it true that most Americans are confused about the ‘War on Terror’, and that many think Al-Quida attacked us because of oil. Would it not then be helpful for a movie to show the hi-jackers chanting ‘God is great!’ and ‘Death to the infidels!’ to underscore this is a holy war.

BTW, I enjoyed parts of ‘The Last Samurai’ too, but watch it again. You may note a sub-text that points out the brutalily (Indian massacres) and cultural insensitivty (destruction of Japanese traditions) of Western culture. Call me old fasioned, but I just don’t like movies where at the climax your supposed to cheer AGAINST the American allies. You didn’t even realize you had until just now, did you…? ;-)

  6. Political Correctness will never allow Holywood to portray a real-life terrorists as a REAL TERRORIST. They will be portrayed as ‘freedom fighters’ nevermind there are numerous movies that stereotypically portray foreigners as terrorists.

  7. Mike,

    Actually, yes, I did. :-)

In our long history, we haven’t always done the right thing. I certainly don’t agree with the Michael Moore style of making the US look like an “evil empire”, but neither do I believe in whitewashing history.

Zipper, you might be surprised. I think there’s actually finally a backlash against PC. :-)

  8. Yes ANOTHER movie is justified. The point should be to remember and not forget. It’s not about the war abroad, gasoline, getting Bin Ladin, but to remember the American’s that were killed both in the planes, in the buildings, on the ground of NYC and the American soil. When is the last time you saw flags on a car like it was right after the 911 attacks. Again in my opinion the point is to not forget those we have lost. The heroes in the sky and on the ground. We love you Don. Mary & Jon D.

  9. Mary,

Since writing the post above and after having seen “United 93″ and the trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcoming film I have to say I’ve changed my mind. Of course that only applies to films that are in fact a tribute and not any that may have a political leaning.

  10. I think it’d be nice if they made a movie about 9/11 depicting what REALLY happened. But that’s just me.

  11. Meaning what, exactly? Seems to me all the Kennedy assassination conspiracy theorists finally have something new to sink their teeth into.

  12. I just was sideswiped by a preview for this movie at The DaVinci Code. Not only did I have no idea that it was even in the works, there was no warning, and all of a sudden the plane was on the screen. I was shocked and appalled. I can’t believe this movie was 1. made, and 2. is advertised without concern for people who might have been personally affected and who would not want to have their stories blasted on the screen. Horrible. I want to put shame on them for doing this.
