DJ Caruso Director DJ Caruso Talks Y: The Last Man, Dead Space & The Shield Movie

In the summer, we reported that Y: The Last Man was facing production woes, with New Line and possible director DJ Caruso having disagreements over the film. Since then, Louis Leterrier has been confirmed as a potential candidate for the director’s spot (a more than worthy second choice), but even with that news the film was still up in the air.

While we don’t have any more news on whether or not Y: The Last Man is finally moving forward, we do have some more information on why DJ Caruso left the project. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Caruso talked about the film, as well as additional upcoming projects including Dead Space and a possible movie version of the FX TV show, The Shield.

Caruso told MovieWeb that he loved the project, but that his main disagreement stemmed from his desire to turn the film into a trilogy. Expanding on his comments, Caruso said,

“I didn’t think that you could take Yorick’s story and put it in to a two-hour movie and do it justice. That was sort of the difference. I think that New Line, working with Warner Bros. in their new relationship, just felt reluctant thinking that we can’t leave this thing open. If you are familiar with the comic book you know it’s just mind-boggling. If you look at what my buddy Frank Darabont did with The Walking Dead you think, I don’t know is that the best thing for it? Because there is just so much great stuff, so no I’m not involved with that anymore.”

Caruso didn’t completely write off the possibility of returning to the film, but doubted that it would happen.

“It’s one of those things where if someone came back to me and said, okay we believe in your vision of the movie, then I would definitely jump back in but I don’t anticipate that happening.”

As for his other projects, Caruso said that Dead Space was something that he’s “very interested in,” but that it probably won’t be his next film. He also discussed their approach to the narrative for the film.

Dead Space we are still trying to lick. It’s a great concept; it’s a great game. We’re dealing with it in sort of a prequel way to tell the story.”

Caruso also talked about a possible movie version of The Shield, the popular FX show of which Caruso directed several episodes. Could Michael Chiklis bring the anti-hero Vic Mackey to the big screen? The question was more of a “Would you like to direct a Shield movie?” than a “Will there be a Shield movie?” so don’t take this as confirmation of anything, but Caruso was enthusiastic about the possibility.

“I’ve never talked about the movie with them but I love Shawn Ryan and I love Michael Chiklis. The Shield by far is the best television experience ever and I loved being an early part of that show…I would get back and shoot that because the great thing about The Shield was really just strapping on a camera and shooting the show. Vic Mackey is a timeless character and he’s such a flawed hero. That was the most beautiful thing about it.”

Since jumping from TV to big movies like Eagle Eye, DJ Caruso has become an in-demand Hollywood director. His next film, I Am Number Four (which looks like a sci-fi teen romance in the Twilight vein), opens February 18th, 2011.

  1. y the last man is my next comic book series to read once ive finished 100 bullets (which could make an amazing movie/tv show wouldnt have said show before walking dead lol )

  2. BigD it was quite enjoyable. There were some parts that were just to convenient for me but didnt ruin it overall.

Not a trilogy but maybe 2 movies.

  3. Y should be a TV show. Like he said, WAY TOO MUCH going on for 2 hour movie.

They better do Dead Space justice. One of the scariest games. The creatures reminded me of The Thing. I just hope they don’t go overboard with the CGI end use puppets instead (like in The Thing).

And SHIELD was one of the best TV shows EVER. Not sure I want a movie though. What’s the point? There would be too much to cover in just one movie.

  4. I don’t know how it would turn out, but I would watch The Shield movie on opening day. In my opinion that was the greatest Television show ever created. It was masterful and the ending was perfect which makes a film kind of hard, but I’d still watch it. I know if MC and Shawn Ryan returned that it would be great.

Maybe Vic will have to some how get in some major ICE case and get Ronny out of Jail to help him. Vic spins these brilliant plans that go wrong and some how sort of work out. The entire time Dutch and Claudette could be trying to get Vic on a new crime and put him away. Maybe this time he dies or finally goes to jail. Hope not though lol as much as he should you can’t help but love him.
