Although The Hunger Games franchise recently came to an end with the premiere of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part Two this fall (even though there are talks about the possibility of prequels), there are still more young adult novel-turned-blockbuster films set for release in the coming years. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will continue the Harry Potter franchise; the third film in The Maze Runner series, The Death Cure, is in development; and Lionsgate is set to release the third Divergent installment, Allegiant, in the spring.
Allegiant is the title of the third and final book in Veronica Roth’s series on which the movies are based, but it will be followed by the film series’ final installment, Ascendant, in 2017. Gearing up for the release of Allegiant, Lionsgate released a teaser trailer earlier this fall, and a full-length trailer last month along with a poster for the movie. Two character posters featuring the movie’s leads, Shailene Woodley who plays Tris Prior and Theo James who play Tobias “Four” Eaton, were also released. Now, two more posters highlight the relationship between Tris and Four.
The film’s official Twitter account ran a contest asking fans to tweet using the hashtag #WeAreAllegiant in order to reveal and possibly win a set of the new posters. One fan, @dauntlessrebel, also won the chance to debut the posters featuring Tris and Four hugging with their respective taglines: “I become better, sharper, every time I touch him” and “The person you became with her is worth being.”
Take a look at the posters:
Along with Woodley and James, much of the cast of Insurgent are returning for the third film, including Ansel Elgort as Tris’ brother Caleb, Zoë Kravitz as Tris’ friend Christina, Miles Teller as the violent Dauntless member Peter, Ray Stevenson as Four’s father Marcus, Naomi Watts as Four’s mother Evelyn, and Octavia Spencer as the Amity leader Johanna, as well as Maggie Q and Keiynan Lonsdale as fellow Dauntless members Tori and Uriah respectively.
The relationship between Tris and Four has been an anchor for much of The Divergent Series films, attempting to act as a measure to ground the dystopian futuristic world of the movies with something more relatable. Whether the films are successful in this endeavor is debatable among viewers, with some enjoying the relationship between Tris and Four, while others feel it falls into the cliche of a YA storyline. To their credit, both Woodley and James have developed their individual characters – if not their relationship together – arguably more successfully.
Still, this relationship will continue to develop in Allegiant, as well as the characters of Tris and Four, who will venture into the world outside post-apocalyptic Chicago and need to fight to protect their people. Of course, those who’ve read Roth’s source novels know that Allegiant shifted the point of view of the series to be from both Four and Tris – rather than from just the perspective of Tris. So it seems these posters are hinting at that shared perspective in Allegiant. Although, since Insurgent spent a good deal of time to build out the back story of Four, it’s likely the third film won’t make a noticeable change in point of view while focusing on both Tris and Four when Allegiant premieres next spring.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant will hit theaters on March 18th, 2016, followed by The Divergent Series: Ascendant on June 9th, 2017.
