New ‘Divergent’ Featurette: Portrait of an Outcast

Published 10 months ago by

In the broken, war-wracked world of Divergent, society has taken a page from Harry Potter and divided the population into five different castes based on people’s basic dispositions. Are you cold and intellectual? Welcome to the Erudite. Honest to a fault? Join the lawgivers of Candor. Brave and headstrong? You belong with the Dauntless.

But what about those unclassifiable personalities like Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley)? As we discover in a in a new featurette about the upcoming dystopian action film, social leaders such as Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) will stop at nothing from keeping these “Divergent” personalities from infecting the rest of the population with their “impure” ideas.

Maggie Q and Shailene Woodley in Divergent 2014 570x380 New ‘Divergent’ Featurette: Portrait of an Outcast

Something of a distilled version of the previously released, lengthier behind-the-scenes featurette, this newest preview doesn’t serve up much in terms of new footage. The focus here is less on the world behind Divergent and more on the ultra-dangerous position its young protagonist finds herself in. Headliners Woodley, Winslet, and Theo James chime in on the situation, as well as Veronica Roth, author of the original novels from which the movie is adapted.

Honestly, this is a fairly threadbare preview compared to both Divergent’s first trailer and the previously mentioned behind-the-scenes footage. While it does reveal the motivation behind the hunt for Divergent personalities, that motivation is so basic that it almost doesn’t need explanation. As a device to maintain awareness of the upcoming film, this featurette does its job admirably – but just that.

Directed by Neil Burger (Limitless), Divergent stars Woodley (The Spectacular Now), Winslet (Contagion), and James (Underworld: Awakening). The film also features Ashley Judd (Olympus Has Fallen), Jai Courtney (Spartacus: War of the Damned), Maggie Q (Nikita), and Ray Stevenson (Thor: The Dark World).
