  1. Thanks. Smart kid. Takes after his dad.

  2. If you could “connect” with the characters because you perceive a lack of back-story, what kind of movies do you enjoy? The narrative was purposely ambiguous, but if you couldn’t empathize with the aliens you obviously can’t handle subtlety. Go watch Transformers 2 again.

Did the aliens ever attack each other? They may have but I don’t remember a scene where it happened. If humans crash-landed somewhere with tons of weapons we’d all be dead in a few years. The thought of violence seems not to cross their mind until they are severely prodded (see how they easily ripped apart a few MNU workers during the eviction).

Their “pranks” like derailing trains and setting fires seem violent to us, but it’s a kind of violence against machines and they might not have perceived a human threat. I don’t think the prawns were inherently violent like a lot of people think, and cite as their reason for not “connecting” with them.

  3. Can someone explain to me why exactly did the aliens not go home in the first place, before they were found by the humans?
The movie explains that what allowed Chris to go home was the use of the “fluid” in pieces of alien technology found in scrap yards…took twenty years to find enough juice to power the mothership. Yet alien technology must obviously have been up in the spaceship beforehand? Why couldn’t Chris just use some of the juice when they randomly got stranded on Earth, before dropping down with his spaceship? Did he have some big “ah-ha” moment when thinking up a plan in the slums or what? I liked the movie, but this part of the plot wasn’t thought out well, unless I missed something…

  4. They explained (I think) that it took the aliens 20 years to develop the fluid required to get them off the planet.

  5. @M-Cat

Actually, they said it took them 20 years to get ENOUGH of that fluid, not to develop it.

  6. Ok yeah I wasn’t exactly sure how that worked but I knew it had something to do with taking 20 years to accomplish it.

  7. Fantastic movie. Minor weak points in th plot for me:
Wikus’ rapid DNA transformation– contrived, not up to par with the rest of the film, had to really work hard to “believe” this one…
Wikus thumping Christopher and stealing the shuttle? Very unlikely and out of character, took me out of the movie.
Wikus’ burning the hatchery and laughing at the pop corn noises– inconsistent and out of character with him later refusing to shoot and becoming ill from killing the innocent prawn during weapons testing.

  8. Distric9fan
it’s hard to believe the rapid DNA transformation but aliens living on earth you can believe with no problem??????

  9. I think wikus downed chris in a moment of tempory insanity, we do this sort of thing all the time just look at the courts to see. Still, it was a Nooooooooo Noooooooo Nooooooo moment. I would realy like a better explanation of how the magic fluid causes transformation and gives power.
The best reason they dont take up arms against us is (well i like to think so) is as was ealier mentioned there drones. This fits in well with an insect like species, SO on that score there must be a govening elite body and probably a soldier class. Where is the soldier class no mention and only 1 real clue in film, that war bot. so i like to think that whatever happened to elite class happened to soldier class. Perhaps when elite class left or died they took the soldier class with them, that is similar to what we would do, our heads of state would go away and take soldiers with them to protect them.
My feelings went out to chris when he saw the experiments on his kin, we all know how cruel, callous and vindictive a species we can be to those who are different. If there isnt a sequel i will be VERY disappointed.
When chriss gets to his home planet(nice point to give us more info on prawn society/technology) and tells his people of the experiments on his kin it will obviusly cause an outrage and they will return to earth in FORCE for rescue, war, domination or all.
All in all and ambiguous story aside, Damm good 9/10 movie, would have been nice if it was a little longer for more story. Perhaps the sequel will be 2 hours or more.

  10. Sorry Ricco, but you insulted my intelligence by posting something so stupid. Obviously the Prawns have the means to just take all the catfood they want, but they are smart enough to realize they are the away team who is grossly outnumbered. If they just start offing humans at will I doubt the human race would’ve just stood by. If you were starving on an a strange planet packed with aliens, you’d probably give full cooperation to get some food too.

Sean, you got it figured out man. Thank you.

  11. hmm..let’s see…To the question “why didn’t they just kill humans with their super guns?” I would answer back with another question: “why did the black majority let the whites segregate them in South Africa even though they outnumbered them?”

  12. I am very much interested to know, what will happen in the next part. Hoping that there will be an upcomming part of this movie.

The main thing that I am expecting is that, Christopher will come back and take revange only to those people those who hated the aliens and then transform Wikus back to human and Wikus gets back to his wife and family and they lived happily everafter. And Christopher gets back to his world making Wikus a hero among them.

Fakers should be exposed for spreading fake news about Wikus. MNU should be distroied and shut down by the aliens.

One of the event should be there that the Bio-Technical power to use the alien weapons will remain in Wikus even though he becoms human. Beside this everything in him will be normal as human being.

    • As to a sequel, I have some ideas of what should happen, based on events from the first movie, which I saw as…

The ship is stalled because it experienced a severe fuel leakage.
The fuel leak mutates the entire crew into Prawns, and the ensuing chaos prevents them from responding to the circumstances appropriately.
The prawns are normally bipedal humanoids that look pretty much like we look – which we can ascertain because wiku, a bipedal humanoid, is mutated into a prawn via the fuel.
The sequel will come out almost exactly three years from the day Christopher promises he will return in three years in the movie.
Christopher and/or his son will return in their normal, human form.

A primary theme of the movie is racism or bigotry. The ship suffers the fuel leak due to sabotage by a faction of the alien political scene that thinks that all other races are inferior, and that no attempt should be made to contact them.

  13. I don’t mind how the sequel of District 9 will be but I WANT IT! It’s the best science fiction movie I’ve ever seen!!! I want to know what happens when Christopher returns to Earth and see him keep his promise to Wikus to help him become human again.

  14. This movie blew ass. I mean there are plenty of sucky movies out there and it doesn't upset me when they suck – because you kind of knew they were going to suck going in. But this movie really sucked because it could have been SO good. I wish I were able to just enjoy a movie without thinking like some of you (apparently) but I kept asking myself all these questions when the plot/back story didn't make sense and since the plot was so contrived it ruined it. I mean they had everything set up to make it so good (great special effects, cool weapons, unique situation) and they didn't deliver. Dammit! Did they ever even think to review the plot lines?

  16. I think if you want some kind of “shoot-em-up fest” or blatantly accessible movie, this probably wasn’t for you. To me, this was a great film with layers of metaphor and allegory that clearly allude to socio-political issues in the world, and the issue of ‘humanity.’

I also read into the plot that the aliens were once human as well (the fact that a transformation occurs from exposure to a substance serves as literal and metaphorical. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sequel where it would be revealed that the prawns were once human, and through repeated exposure over time have become prawn…this would also be a great sub-textual metaphor.

  17. I like the movie but what really would be good, if they made district 9 into a computer game

  18. I love District 9! I want a Sequel! i want a prequel too! but if they make a prequel, they might not make sequel due to tiredness, besides i want Sequel more than Prequel! I really love to See the History of wars, coming back to the prawns home world, I like to see how they operate…weapon artillery, Mechanic robots..basically want to see the whole planet! cuzz they left me yearning to know what will happen next! esp in the new world! I love epic animation like Beast Wars! and I see the epic animation in this Movie! I love it! the beginning was kinda boring, but I hope this sequel would entertain, and surprise me from beginning to end.

  19. Lovely aspects..
~Weapon Designs, WEapon Blasts and effects! Love to see MORE of it in the sequel!
~Love the storyline! how he gradually turning into a prawn and how Crucifer n other prawns react to him ^^
~Love the robot at the end sucking the bullets and blasting them back at enemies ^^love how it could record what ppl said. Great, epic machine!

    nots so good aspects..
-storyline also, 20 years those aliens remain inactive? and why would they trade their guns when they really could use em to kill the guys to get cat foods…overall if u limit it to 10 or 7 years I would be okay tho ^^
-not many actions in the movie, only at the end with lots of actions…but try not to make it sooo superficial that it would look lame, and disappoint everyone! The Storyline is most matters plus the creativity of animations! thats the Epic and originality of this Movie!
    ~This movie is Epic!

  20. I think some of you are missing the point with the fluid. At no point did they say that it was magical or that it even needed to be a large quantity or anything like that. The fluid was simply enough to get the smaller ship up to the big one. Prawns don’t fly, so they had to get back up to the ship somehow! To me that was well laid out in the film.

What was not explained was how that same liquid, when exposed to Wiccus’ orifices magically transformed him into an alien.
