Very Dissappointing, this was one book series i was looking forward to see done well on the big screen. I concur that the biggest mistake was releasing the film in May rather than December. It would have killed at the box office in December its only real competition would have been I am Legend and Horton Hears a Who. Not tough competition.BUt alas they foolishly thought they could out do the likes of Iron Man, Indy 4 and Speedracer. Not sure what the logic was, but it didnt work. I did however enjoy Caspian more than Wardrobe, it was faster paced and did not really drag much and actually made want to read the book series again.
I wish they would find another studio other than Fox, Fox gets too involved and will end up ruining a good thing. Examples: Daredevil,X-Men, Fantastic Four, Babylon AD, you get the picture.

none of this would have happened if Prince Caspian was released during christmas like the Wardrobe but in the summer it suffocated between iron man and indiana jones. i still don’t know when in 2010 they’ll release dawn trader don’t think thell keep the summer date they have now because of disney pulling out and iron man 2 is set for summer 2010 along with other giants (they won’t make same mistake again) and they definatly won’t release it in the christmas season because Deathly Hallows part 1 is set for that time(WoooHOO)and there is no chance of making money sitting next to the boy wizard.

I wonder if this will have an effect, if any, on the Hobbit films.

Also my thinking behind why the second Narnia film failed was because it was released in a month where there were so many anticipated movies like Iron Man, Speed Racer, and Indiana Jones. Narnia just got overshadowed. I also believe that because it was released in May instead of December, like its predecessor. Which I think was the mistake. Narnia just seemed a better fit for the Holiday season.

@ Vic, I totally agree with you. Whatever their idea was for making the novels into film just mistranslated some where down the road. Granted taking a history class in Special Effects used in films didn’t help before I watched the first film – I could spot every single green screen and matte painting used in the background… to which was very poorly done compared to other films and the second one for that matter. But the first film also had an issue with their acting. I know they’re kids and all but the way how they were delivering lines were so robotic it just wasn’t enjoyable. As for the second one, acting got much better, composites were done much much better, but some how it missed a wow factor. It’s a shame but I definitely am not surprised the 3rd installment is getting the hit it is. The film adaptations couldn’t keep my interest in the storylines but I’m sure one day, when I finally get myself to pick up the books, they would do a much better job

Dumb, just dumb. If Disney had been smart they would have skipped over Caspian and jumped into Dawn Treader as this was my favorite book of the series and Caspian was my least favorite (yes, I know, there would have been serious continuity issues if they had done that). I really liked that book and hope they find a way to make it. By the way, I thought Wardrobe was very well made but I wasn’t that thrilled with Caspian. The box office #’s jibe with my feelings on both movies.

Although I did fall asleep through the first one a little bit… Think I was just tired though, but usually a movie would keep me awake despite how tired I am.

Looks like Tolkien is gets the last laugh. IMHO, thus far any one of the LOTR films were WAY better than any one of the Narnia films. Not to mention two more upcoming LOTR films. Tolkien RULES!!

Oh wow! I’m so sad about this news. I read the Chronicles as a child and have continued to read them every so often as an adult. I was thrilled when they did the first movie and glad they continued. Prince Caspian was definitely not as good though and I felt it wasn’t as strong in characterization as the first.

Truth is, I should have realized something was up when they didn’t release a gift box set for Prince Caspian. I do hope someone else steps up to the plate because while the 4th book is going to be ridiculously hard to get people into, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a great book just brimming with possibilities, and don’t get me started on A Horse and His Boy which remains my favorite book of the series. That would be wonderful translated to film.

If they can secure Fox’s involvement, then I think this may be an improvement. Caspian was a definite improvement over Wardrobe, but the Narnia series deserves something more than simply improving on a workmanlike treatment. It needs some new eyes and fresh blood. Here’s to hoping.

I’m not overly surprised. Narnia just hasn’t got the drawing power as a Harry Potter flick or Batman. Disney can see they’re going to lose money of the deal & are backing out while they still can.

The problem is even though there was plenty of spectacle in the Narnia movies, it seemed like they had no soul – a very odd thing considering the source material…

I’ve got to admit I’m a little disappointed by this news, though I’m not surprised by it. I read the books as a kid, and now as a father I’m enjoying watching the movies with my children. I would love to see them find a way to make this with a smaller budget, or find another financial backer, but I doubt it will happen.

They were good movies with a good message that all members of the family could enjoy together. I’ll miss that.
