Dirty Dancing Remake in Development

Lionsgate studios has recently reached into the Hollywood remake bag and pulled out…Dirty Dancing! That’s right; the studio elites are at it again with their latest announcement to develop a script by Julia Dahl (Uptown Girl) into a living, breathing Dirty Dancing remake of the classic 80′s dance film.

A director has yet to be announced but, as sure as I am pudgy, they will pick some hip music/dance film director like Anne Fletcher (Step Up), Thomas Carter (Save the Last Dance) or Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard). All of whom would be fine choices.

This is not the first dancing remake penciled onto the calendar though. Kevin Bacon’s signature dance flick, Footloose, has been in development for months now. I can’t say that I blame Lionsgate for giving Dirty Dancing a remake though. The movie was made for $6 million in 1987 and BoxOfficeMojo has it topping out at a worldwide box office total of $213 million, although the horrible Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights was made for $25 million and brought in a paltry $28 million in 2004…

Combine that box office success with the recent string of television dance shows, including So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Best Dance Crew, Dancing with the Stars and even America’s Got Talent, that have become monster hits, and all the parameters are right to capitalize on audience’s recent lust for everything related to dance. I suppose it makes sense for a studio to try and grab the wave and ride it to shore before the tide goes out.

swayze and grey Dirty Dancing Remake in Development

What guy hasn't tried to do this in the pool with his girl?

I will freely admit that I secretly enjoy watching Jennifer “Baby” Grey being lifted in the air by her stomach in the strong controlling hands of Patrick “Bad-Ass” Swayze while they are in the lake. You could even consider it to be one of my guilty pleasures”; but I can’t help feeling like this is just going to be a very ho-hum attempt at a remake.

It’s been said before on Screen Rant that we do not look forward to many remakes but if Hollywood MUST make one, then they should at least bring something new to the table. We even have a good set of remake guidelines for them to follow, though I doubt they ever made it to the desk of any studio CEO. Maybe Hollywood is just trying to cover all of Swayze’s movies. They are, after all, moving full steam ahead with a Red Dawn remake. Maybe next we’ll see Ghost and Roadhouse make their way to the big screen one more time?

Personally, I’m not really looking forward to this particular remake. I’m sure it will find a solid, newer, younger, audience when it is released and will undoubtedly make money but I have serious doubts as to the films ability to reach the box office numbers of the original. Seriously, do you think Hollywood has the means to recreate an absolute classic scene like the one below?

One other quick point, I don’t think there is anyone man enough to fill the dance shoes of Patrick Swayze, Kevin Bacon or John Travolta. Hollywood is going younger with their leading men and honestly, the talent just isn’t there.

Dirty Dancing is currently in development and has no release date.

  1. They already remade this it was Called Dance Flick by the Wayans Bros. LOL

  2. One word: Why?

    Two more words: Who Cares?

  3. You know, I think you’re right about one thing. The big shots in Hollywood literally have a giant bag filled with little scraps of paper with every movie ever made in the 80s, and they’re just randomly drawing them out to see which one gets a remake.

  4. This is like ordering cake and getting poop.

    For some reason.

  5. There are writers with fresh ideas out there but these fat cats aren’t giving them a chance. District 9 was a fresh idea but since Peter Jackson was involved, companies felt they could take a chance, and it paid off. But get a fresh new writer without heavy backing, the fat cats won’t come near him.

  6. John, unfortunately, I have to agree with you. It’s a shame that in this day and age, when so many people have access to computers and blogs, that CRAP is still preferred by studio execs over originality. I’m sure that there are THOUSANDS of writers out there with original ideas that would make a HELLUVA movie, but without the backing of someone like Jackson or Speilberg, will just rot on the vine. INstead of something fresh, we’re going to probably get Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus destroying a classic film. BLECCCHHHH.

  7. I agree with both Andy & John ~ Not only are the remakes driving me insane!

I live in Miami and miss out on SO MANY movies ~ For some reason the theaters here won’t show “independent” films.. Very rarely does one ever get through.. yet we get a BUNCH of BIG NAME, BLOCK BUSTER type movies.. not that i hate those but i feel like they undermined my intelligence by always choosing High action, NO PLOT movies… or remake after remake.. ughg IT IS DEFINITELY ANNOYING!

  8. OFFS WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Two words…Channing Tatum. Actually, it would be amazing to see Channing and Jenna Dewan in this with Anne Fletcher directing and Adam Shankman producing. Perfection!

    • I just watched a spoof Dirty Dancing parody that Channing was in and yes it’s funny, but I would LOVE to see him and Jenna do a Dirty Dancing remake (I was checking to see if a remake in progress which is what brought me here lol). They had great chemistry in Step Up so I think they would do fantastic in Dirty Dancing. :)

  10. I understand remaking Footloose, even Fame (although unfortunately, the ads look inferior) but Dirty Dancing?? What was wrong with it that it needs to be remade? It’s like kicking Patrick Swayze’s face while he’s down. I’m highly offended that they are talking about remaking his shining performance while he is on death’s door.

  11. I’m sorry, but there will never be another “Dirty Dancing”. I’ve watched it probably hundreds of times–even wore out my VHS tape so I had to get another, this time DVD–and never tire of it. As far as I’m concerned, a remake will never measure up to the original, but isn’t that true of anything worthwhile!!

  12. HELL NO! They first was talking about remaking Red Dawn now Dirty Dancing?! WTF!

I’m sorry it seems as if they are trying to remake a lot of Patrick Swayze movies here lately! They need to quit! I love the originals and I will never discrace Patrick by watching them lousy remakes! >:(

That’s just pathetic if you ask me!

  13. OMG they cannot remake this amazing classic!! im 17 years old and i dont even want a bloody remake, you cannot replace the characters its like in years to come trying to replace robert pattinson in twilight it just would not work!! how can you replace patrick swayze? YOU CANT! exspecially not with justin timberlake i like justin but nooo it this movie will be a big fail if its remade. i certainly won’t watch it i’ll stick to the amazing classic and all my friends agree they were going mad yesterday about this and we all agreed we would pay to see the classic back in the cinema screens but we’d rather watch grass grow then a remake.

  14. omg patrick swayze was so freakin sexy. ugg i wish that i was her in that movie. i wish that he could grind me like that. haha
