The trailer for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency season two has arrived, revealing the premiere date. The series is written by Max Landis, best known for Chronicle, and is based on the novels by Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy). The first season was met with critical acclaim, as it embraced the weirdness of Adams' writing. It stars Samuel Barnett as Dirk Gently and Elijah Wood as his reluctant assistant, Todd. The second season will be bringing back the majority of the characters from the first season, whilst adding some new blood to expand the universe.
Alan Tudyk (Rogue One, Firefly), John Hannah (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Aleks Paunovic (War for the Planet of the Apes) will be joining the cast in villainous roles in season two, opposite Dirk and Todd. Based on those character descriptions and the footage seen in the trailer, Dirk Gently season two is going to bring the Holistic Detective Agency to brand new realms of existence.

Dirk Gently will play with a whole new reality in its second season called the 'Fantasy Realm', as teased in the new trailer (see the video above). Dirk and Todd are looking for 'The Boy'. Although the importance of 'The Boy' isn't made clear here, chances are that the Detectives aren't the only characters in the show searching for him. We won't have to wait too long to uncover these new mysteries however, as Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency will be returning to our screens on October 14. The official description makes sense of the trailer, teasing what Dirk will be going up against this year:
Every season is a dizzying, smart, dangerous, unexpected and (for us, not the people involved) fun adventure that explores a different genre. Season one was about time travel with body-swapping, and this season involves an injection of fantasy. The vast dangers lurking in the fantasy realm navigate a path to Earth, becoming a threat in reality, and it’s up to Dirk (Barnett) and the gang to stop them in their tracks. But first – they need to find each other… Everything and everyone continues to be connected… from the sterile chambers of the government organization Blackwing, to the sleepy town of Bergsberg and the magical land of Wendimoor. After a few misfires, Dirk Gently steadily finds his footing on the new case to “find The Boy”, and with the help of his friends, makes the necessary connections to solve the mystery before it’s too late.
Since the first season introduced time-travel and soul swapping, we have to wonder what season two will begin to introduce. We know that 'The Rowdy Three' will return, as will Todd's sister. We don't know how the 'fantasy realm' will play into the plot of the season. However, if the 'fantasy realm' is a physical place that the characters can visit, are there other realms that could be potential threats? There could also be realms where our heroes find allies with. Either way, this all sounds very close to alternate realities and parallel universes.
Doppelgangers of Dirk and Todd would really throw a spanner in the works. Since the first season was a wild adventure that brought in crazy characters and even crazier stories, such a plot development wouldn't feel out of place. We have high hopes for the second season. After all, the series managed to make it into our favourite shows of 2016 list.
