‘Die Hard 6′ Titled ‘Die Hardest’ – John McClane Headed to Tokyo?

Die Hard 6 Die Hardest Die Hard 6 Titled Die Hardest John McClane Headed to Tokyo?

Based on our 2-star review of A Good Day to Die Hard, it’s clear that (in our opinion) the franchise is running on fumes. Domestically, the movie was something of a flop ($67 million on a $90+ million budget), but international earnings were huge ($235 million), meaning that Fox (which, like many other studios, is showing greater favor to the international market) has good incentive to move forward with the sixth film.

Well, today comes word that Die Hard 6 is at least moving into the pre-production phase. The next installment apparently has the working title of Die Hardestand we have reports about the screenwriter who has been tapped to pen the film, as well as some early plot details.

Total Film has the exclusive about Die Hardest, which is apparently being scripted by Ben Trebilcook. If the name is unfamiliar: Trebilcook is currently working on a martial-arts-meets-video games movie called Knockout, and the producer of that film tapped the relatively untested young filmmaker to write Die Hard 6.

The plot details we know so far are that Die Hardest will once again take place predominately overseas –  shifting from NYC to Tokyo. This would mean that John McClane (Bruce Willis) would get a chance to kill bad guys of a whole new nationality – while still leaving room for him to crack many America-centric jokes, as well as making crass cultural observations like how Japanese dudes can’t take a punch, or how some femme fatale isn’t acting like a proper little Geisha. You know the drill by now.

Die Hard 6 title writer Die Hard 6 Titled Die Hardest John McClane Headed to Tokyo?

“In Russia, You do not Die Hard – Hard Die YOU!”

Things are only in the script treatment stage at the moment, which leaves the studio plenty of room to scrap the project at low cost, should they fail to convince Willis and franchise producer Alex Young to sign off. For his part, however, Trebilcook seems hopeful that his work will be up to par:

It is extremely faithful to the franchise and characters and is a natural progression. It’s also a very plausible storyline… [There's] the possibility producers might go back and find some other source material to base the next one on, like they did with the first and second. Mine though, I feel it could be the Rocky Balboa of the Die Hard franchise.

…Hopefully that Rocky Balboa reference means that he’s writing the closing chapter to this worn out story (ZING!).

Would you like to see John McClane take on Tokyo? Or is it time for this entire franchise to just go ahead and ‘Die Hard?’

We’ll keep you updated on the status of Die Hardest as more news comes to light.

  1. I would love for John MacLaine to take on Tokyo. I am a big fan and don’t want to see it end yet

  2. I would love for John MacLaine to take on Tokyo. I am a big fan and don’t want to see it end yet.

  3. I would like his side kick from die hard 4 to make a reapearance as a computer hacking aid to McClaie

  4. For this one I don’t want Jai Courtney or Justin Long. For this one you can put Samuel L Jackson or Reginald Vel Johnson in this one as McClane’s sidekicks. Jai Courtney ruined the Die Hard Franchise. No Jai Courtney, period. He sucked. He was mostly the hero in the fifth one and it sucked. Die Hard is supposed to be about Bruce Willis as John McClane being the wisecracking foul mouthed cop always in the wrong place at the wrong time. like I said get a Gruber, Holly, and all the elements that made the first and the third good. No John Moore for directing this. Get john McTiernan, Shane Black, Richard Donner, John Woo, Michael Mann, Sylvester Stallone, etc.

  5. I’m glad to hear that the new writer seems to be taking this one with enthusiasm and seriousness the last one I felt had fun action but it lacked a lot of chemistry and story I think that making it the Rocky Balboa of the franchise is a terrific move I would like to see the conclusion of the trilogy and have it done in the proper way. Hope this works wonders looking forward to it

  6. Die Hard 6…bring it on!!!!4 5 surpassed my expectations…so 6 will be a fitting ending to the story…

  7. In the final scene let John McClane be eaten by Godzilla.

  8. Should be called “Old Habits Die Hard”.

  9. Quentin Tarantino should direct Die Hard 6.

    • Many people talk about the final ‘Die Hard’,but I would love to see a 7, an 8, a 9, and maybe even a 10th Die Hard!
      Why not?
A big part of the world, loves Die Hard!
I am a huge John McClan fan too, and who better than Bruce playing good ol’ John?
      Exactly: NOBODY.
People, we can’t miss Johnny from time to time!
Don’t know what the plot of ‘Die Hardest’ wil be, but please Bruce, don’t stop as John McClane…

  11. It’s time for this series to die, PERIOD.

  12. Why take him over seas? To me it doesn’t make sense because, the Die Hard films I grew up on focused in America ( L.A and N.Y).
John isn’t a CIA or an FBI Agent. He’s a cop, nothing else.

When I heard that the heart and soul wasn’t going to be in it my first thought was ‘how stupid’. He has that grin, the humor and the way John gets upset and focused.
If there isn’t the witty come back or a gun firing to filter out the last two words from his famous one liner then it’s not a die hard film.

what I want to see is the son of his first enemy and have all the actors who have appeared before.

  13. They need to go back the original. Keep it simple. Russia was a let down why tokyo?

  14. Lets get a movie where Johns daughter is going to elope to the character from part 4 without permission from John. Holly is the one that tells him. He gets angry and heads off to stop the wedding and to properly give away his daughter. All of a sudden he gets caught up in whatever unfortunate event occurs. set the movie in Hawaii, Caribbean, or Vegas as the site of the eloping.

End the movie with a proper wedding of his daughter and with all family and friends there (including past allies from the series.) Then have Holly and John happy for their daughter and gives them the idea to get back together and renew their vows.

  15. The plot for die hard 6 should be as follows: holly is having an engagement/Christmas party at nakatomi where she is CEO. She of course invites John, and their kids, along with al, argile, Zeus, etc. Enter terrorists. It is revealed that holly’s fiancé is working with them and is instrumental in getting them inside. The big reveal is the main villain is in fact Hans gruber! (Remember the line in the original about “making everyone believe you’re dead?) It is shown through flashbacks that “falling to his death” was all part of his plan. This sets the stage for an epic battle that takes place where it all started. In the films climax, this time hans shoots John, and he is dangling over the ledge. Hans says ” what was that line you used to say…happy trails?” Holly shoots Hans and she says: ” it’s yippie ki yay ###} @@@@&!” Holly helps john back up and they kiss thus closing the final chapter of the series. My title: Die Hard 6 Return to Nakatomi!

  16. So… is this still happening?

  17. The movie listing is gone from Bruce Willis’ IMDB Filmography

  18. Listen, love diehard. But the last one was soooooo bad. Don’t want to see superman, want McLain back. Regular guy who just makes it through he’ll. Not this terminator garbage. Make it good or don’t make it at all

  19. I personally don’t care where the film location is as long as the story has McLean’s daughter and son in the story. I absolutely love part four and five because a McLean reconnect with his children.

  20. In this one, we should get to meet John’s sister with the allegedly small feet.

  21. I would like to see a 6th movie in all honesty, first 3 were great 4 was ok and 5 was a dissapointment so be nice to see it end on a high

  22. I’m looking forward to this even though I am not keen on Die Hard 4 and Die Hard 5 the new movie apparently goes back to the feel and atmosphere of the first 3 Die Hard movies. I’ve read quit a bit about this movie: Samuel LThe Die Hardest story is based The movie will have the modern world west ed on the idea of Nakatomi celebration and 30th Anniversary of the crisis seen in the original Die Hard movie, John Mclain is invited to Tokyo for the celebrations and all Hell breaks loose when a new more lethal villain is revealed.

Now this Screen Rant article in my opinion is not being as unbiased or fair to the movie as it should be. This version of Die Hard will be closer to the original movie and will also bring back some series characters, one of which is Samuel Jackson’s ‘Zeus’ character.

It will also have that cool Americanized sunny colourful action movie look and feel which was lost in the 4th and 5th movies.

  23. I’m looking forward to this even though I am not keen on Die Hard 4 and Die Hard 5 the new movie apparently goes back to the feel and atmosphere of the first 3 Die Hard movies. I’ve read quit a bit about this movie: The Die Hardest title is from when Renny Harlin was set to direct Die Hard 3 – they’ve just brought the title back –

The story is based on the idea of Nakatomi celebration and 30th Anniversary of the crisis seen in the original Die Hard movie, John Mclain is invited to Tokyo for the celebrations and all Hell breaks loose when a new more lethal villain is revealed.

  24. I would like for them to take this Die Hard seriously for once. Plausible, gritty, perhaps throw in a bit of realism here and there, and bring back the feeling of truly impossible odds while John McClaine really is nearly dead or close to it. The guy is like a Rocky of the action movie genre, so throw him a whallop and don’t let up. Perhaps if they care enough the franchise won’t die off without a bang.

  25. I would like to see another one but?? The last one that was made didn’t have the original John McLane in it. Bruce Willis is an excellent actor but he did not portray John in the last die hard. The last movie was a joke

  26. Here’s what Die Hard 6 should be:

    Title: “Old Habits Die Hard”

Story: The film opens on a New York City plaza around 10am. There’s a crowd of NYC cops and reporters, people in suits, etc. The camera pans across the front row revealing McLane’s daughter, then son, the ex Wife (the original actress from parts 1 and 2). We hear voice over from some official police captain or something at the podium describing the “many years of service,” “doing the hard jobs that no one else could,” “And frankly, staying alive…” etc etc.

The voice then welcomes up Detective John McClane. They’re honoring him for a recent criminal bust or something (also described briefly by Voice Over). McClane walks up to the podium with his arm in a sling and some bruises and cuts on his face. He is dressed in the NYC dress blue uniform, hat and all. He is handed the award and the crowd applauds. McClane quiets them to say a few words. He thanks his fellow cops who helped him “catch this guy” but then pauses… looks at his ex wife and kids in the crowd and continues… “which is why this is so hard.” I’m officially announcing my retirement from the NYPD. Effective… ” (He turns and looks at his captain who is surprised but nods to him. We then see his wife nodding to him in agreement holding back tears) “Effective, right now.”

We then are in a cold dark room with an old box style television. McClane’s ceremony is being broadcast by a NYC news affiliate but the broadcast we see is being translated in to German.

Now, we’re in the McClane home somewhere upstate New York. There are moving boxes everywhere… someone just moved in or is about to move out. It’s afternoon on a Saturday. The camera follows McClane from the kitchen, arm still in a sling, grabs a beer from the fridge, walks out to garage and to the driveway to get something out of his truck or something… he hears a loud bang and ducks for cover, gently setting his beer on the hood of the car, reaches under the car above the front wheel and pulls out a 45, peers up and sees an old mustang going by banging out exhaust cracks. Loud as gun shots and reverberating in McClane’s head. But it was just a car.

His wife comes out with a tray with lunch on it, see s McClane on the ground with the gun, peering at the mustang driving by. She drops the tray in shock and then gets mad, revealing there’s still tension in their relationship and that getting back together with her must have been the reason for McClane’s retirement.

Then, shots of retired life continue in a montage of sorts… showing McClane going about his new life of peace, bored out of his mind… Watering the lawn, cleaning out leaves from the gutter… wishing for something, anything to happen. He gets a call from an unkown number on his cell, ignores it mumbling something like “Gdamn telemarketers…” Then a text from his daughter and another call, an email notification, etc… his cell is blowing up. He takes the call from his son that just comes through. “Dad, are you seeing this??”

He tells him to turn on TV. The NYC news affiliate is broadcasting live from times square, as all the screens have been taken over by this grainy newsfeed. Its a loop of a bearded man speaking German. He has a room full of NYC dignitaries, etc, tied up and on the floor. He takes out a machine gun and guns them all down, killing them with a spray of bullets left to right. Again, speaking more in German… but we can barely make out two words: John McClane.”

    “Dad, we’ve translated it.”

    It’s Hans Gruber’s son.

The rest of the storyline basically involves Hans Gruber’s son seeking McClane out of retirement for revenge, enticing McClane to come to Germany, where the majority of action will take place. McClane remains technically retired the duration of the film’s events. Gruber Jr will obviously need to do more to convince McClane to come out… but I think we should stay away from kidnapping or threatening his family again and go bigger… like big, global terrorism level.

The goal for this story is to bring it back to its roots while also giving the brand a fitting close. Hence the title: “Old Habits Die Hard.”

THIS would be an interesting backdrop for the action franchise… and hopefully stepping up action sequences to the level of the 3rd movie. which may be the best executed in my opinion.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks! :)

  27. Old Habits Die Hard

  28. mate and I came up with the idea for the sequel.
Justin Long marries John’s daughter, wedding is overseas (why not Tokyo?), someone comes looking for revenge on John by kidnapping the daughter (from the past 5 films), Bonnie Bodella could return and so could Sam Jackson. Then you’ve got John, Son, Zeus and Matt Farrell trying to track em down and save the day (because they all got skills) … but here’s the best part … title – “Old Habits Die Hard”.

  29. I think this should be the last die hard because no one could ever replace bruce an he’s just gettin a little to old to keep at it but however id like them to name this 1 DIED HARD ? For 1 thing the title alone would have the enternet buzzing ! An the 2nd thing would leave room for #7 if bruce an the people want it!!
