Die Hard 5 title Good Day Die Hard Die Hard 5 is A Good Day to Die Hard; Plot Details Emerge

We’ve learned a lot about Die Hard 5 since the project was announced – early details pointed to John McClane (Bruce Willis) going to Russia to face his latest threat, McClane now having stronger family ties in the form a young son, and possibly Justin Long from Live Free or Die Hard as McClane’s son-in-law (having married his daughter, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Die Hard 4).

One thing we haven’t heard, though, is what title the new Die Hard will be sporting – but now we know: fans of the franchise can look forward to seeing if the ominous implications of the title, A Good Day to Die Hard, actually play out in the film.

The new title was revealed by FOX co-chairman/Chief Executive Officer Tom Rothman on Jim Rome’s morning show. We got wind of it via a comprehensive report from the guys over at /Filmwhere they also posted a juicy list of early plot details from the film. You can check out that list below:

  • Shooting begins in January 2012
  • The sequel will be released on February 14th, 2013 (Valentine’s Day).
  • The story is set in Russia and begins with John McClane heading to Moscow to sweet talk some cops into letting his apparently-wayward son out of jail for something he did, but when he gets there, things surrounding his son’s arrest are not as they appear and world-threatening terrorist hijinks ensue.
  • McClane, Jr. has yet to be cast.
  • They still don’t know if it will be rated PG-13 or R.

This sounds like a typical bad day for John McClane, albeit set on a larger scale than previous films (each installment has upped the ante in terms of location and scope if you really look back at the franchise in its entirety). Of course, the presence of McClane’s son suggests that the film is going for a ‘pass the torch’ approach – one that would likely see the aging Willis bow out of the franchise in favor of some younger blood.

As many movie fans know, the pass the torch tactic has been tried before in films like Indiana Jones 4, and the upcoming Ghostbusters 3. I think it’s safe to say that not many fans are cheering for Shia LaBeouf to don Indy’s fedora – nor is anybody especially excited for the iconic actors from the Ghostbusters franchise to hand off their proton packs to a group of young (and likely, less funny) actors. In the case of Die Hard 5, it really all depends on who they cast to play McClane’s son. Some free advice: DO NOT make it Taylor Lautner.

A Good Day to Die Hard is going to be in theaters on February 14, 2013. John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines) will direct from a script written by Skip Woods (A-Team).

  1. Hans Gruber had a Kid by a Russian call girl and he will take mcclanes son as a pay back for killing his father..

    • Bruce Willis IS die hard…you cant pass the torch…it would just be adifferent set of action movies

      • They need someone who can deliver an but kicking as well as take one like McClain

  2. As long as they don’t cut off his signature line like the last one, I’m good with it. I personally don’t cuss, but come on, that’s one of the best catch phrases in all of movie history! It’s not like there aren’t other PG-13 movies with f-bombs.

    • ah shud up ray

    • Die Hard made Bruce Willis and Bruce Willis made Die Hard. Kill him off and you kill the franshise. =) I vote for a Die Hard 6 as well before John Needs to die or retire.

    • ba-zing

  3. Hey, I think it would be GREAT to put Taylor Lautner, Channing Tatum, Shia LeBeouf and Zach Efron in the movie. Put ’em in there and KILL ‘EM OFF in the first ten minutes of the movie. One after the other. What’s a better way for the franchise to say, “Yeah, we know better than THAT”!

If we’re talking a pass-the-torch movie, it would DEFINITELY need to be taken over by someone like Jason Stathom. You don’t replace Bruce Willis with some dandelion-type dude. The new Magneto is pretty bad-ass. Someone like that!

  4. Die Hard was Bruce Willis’s breakthough and it is another great franchise. The idea for the fifth installment was exactly as I thought; the terrorist level would be taking at a global level. Think back!

Die Hard- Skyscraper in Los Angeles.
Die Hard 2- Dulles International Airport.
Die Hard 3- New York City
Die Hard 4- The USA via Internet usage

If the main terrorist through is another member of the Gruber family, then I do not know what to say.

  5. So I feel like this movie is really going to depend on who they cast as John McClain Jr. It better be a respectable actor…and well put NOT Taylor Lautner!!!

  6. Love the Die Hard movies! It keeps getting better and better. I heard that the 5th Die Hard will involve a Presidents (American) assassination. Wonder if thats true.

  7. I hope its rated R, John McClane is a bit of a potty mouth and they shouldnt change the character to get a PG-13 rating, and I like how he will unload a whole clip of bullets in 1 bad guy

  8. I think that justin long should def be with him ha they way they played off eachother in die hard 4 was superb and extremely entertaining and maybe this time Justin long could start geting lossend up and becoming like John ha

  9. in die hard 6 i have a great idea for the villan kristoff or theo they didn’t die in the first one and the ornginal actors arn’t dead (well i don’t know about gerald bonn- kristoff)and i know the police did a sweep of the buliding but what if one of them or both esaped or one of them or both got cauht went to prison broke out and want revenge on mcclane or mcclanes son if mcclane dies in ”a good day to die hard”.

  10. if die hard 5 will be as good as the rest of the die hards i will be happy.

  11. It would be great if Taylor Lautner would be in die hard 5

  12. In order for it to be like the old days this has to get an R rating

  13. Two words. Aaron Paul!

  14. I think McClane should let the terrorists win for a change. F**k it, he should hit the big red button himself and wipe us all out while listening to Creedence and laughingly saying “Yipeekayey Motherfuckers! I finally cracked!!”. Seriously though, there is no Die Hard without Bruce Willis. Scratch that idea. If McClane dies, the films end.

  15. It is fantastic movie to watch

  16. If the goal of this movie is to pass the torch to a younger actor to keep the die hard saga going then John McClane will die in this picture. I think the guy who played Forrest bond errant in lawless would be perfect to carry on the die hard saga

    • As for the replacement for John McClane, I vote for John McCain.
      He is dope!
      Suck on that for awhile.

  17. Shame on you Bruce Willis worst movie of the series and you have daughters? Why don’t you Hollywood big shots start making good movies again and maybe some female role models? Ugh

  18. very very good to see

  19. Bruce is one of my biggest action hero. However with my wish that the movie could continue throughout the coming generations like James Bond, I do feel they have to pick another main man to be the star of the next DIE HARD movie .

VIN DIESEL is the only guy I know is the closest to bring the role forward.

Hope you guys can help bring my tiny voice to the director JOHN MOORE.
