Evil Dead Remake Diablo Cody Diablo Cody Helping Write Evil Dead Remake

It’s been a big week for fans of Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. After years and years of talk about the franchise returning with a sequel or a remake, it’s finally happening. Whether or not the particulars of the news are good in the minds of loyal fans, is another question entirely.

It all began with a rumor that Sam Raimi’s editor Bob Murawski was packing up his stuff and heading to Detroit to being work on a new Evil Dead project. Hours later, franchise star Bruce Campbell confirmed via Twitter that the project was a go and that it would be a remake. The following day we learned that Sam Raimi – the man who directed the three original films – kept to his words from a few years prior in choosing a young, unknown director to helm the pic and now, Diablo Cody is also involved with the project.

The new Evil Dead film will not be Evil Dead 4 and instead will be a remake directed by Fede “Freddy” Alvarez, whose short film Panic Attack! earned him a 7-figure exclusive deal with Sam Raimi to turn the short into a full feature film. Before that happens – if it’s still happening – the pair will team to rebirth the Evil Dead series.

Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures made it all official today with a press release on the matter, confirming the remake with Alvarez directing, as well as having wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. They’ve also announced that Diablo Cody will be conducting revisions on the screenplay.

Sam Raimi will be producing the new Evil Dead, alongside Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, who all helped produce the originals. The three were quoted in the press release, revealing their hopes at rekindling the series.

“We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the Evil Dead series. We can’t wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us 30 years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements.”

Cody hit it big with 2007′s Juno which earned her an Oscar win for her writing. She followed that up with the Megan Fox starrer, Jennifer’s Body, and the television series United States of Tara.

Cody is known for creating her own slang and unique character dialogue in her writing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t at all. So, the question of contention for fans is whether or not her style of writing will fit in with the group’s modernized take on the protagonist, Ash, and how much they’re story and characters will veer off the path set by the 1981 original.

Can Evil Dead work in today’s day and age for new audiences, and should it stick to the same comedic style of Army of Darkness?

  1. There is ONLY ONE Ash! THAT is Bruce Campbell, Hail to the King baby!.

    • The King of Thieves?

    • Sooo Right!!!

  2. Shop smart shop S mart.

  3. And I kno it doesn’t come till the 3rd film but I really think the chainsaw hand should factor in

    • The Chainsaw Hand was in Evil Dead 2.

  4. Oh and unlimited shotgun shells

  5. Army of Darkness was STUPID funny, where as Evil Dead 1 & 2 were genuinely funny, just in a disturbing and demented, highly twisted, bad trip, Looney Tunes sort of way.

Army Of Darkness’ weakness is it’s overly silly comedy. I don’t know why there isn’t going to be an Evil Dead 4, but “anything” is better than “nothing”.

    • No Sir, Anything is not better than Nothing. It’s that kind of thinking that gets these greedy Hollywood dorks salivating and churning out reboot, remake, preboot, prebooquel – etc.

  6. Forgot it was also in 2. But that’s what makes aod so great its rediculous. The belt whip the metal hand and the unlimited shotgun shells. Everyline in that movie spoken by ash is awsome that’s what I hope for in the new one but more horror

  7. Loving it! this is one trip to the movies for sure!

  8. Dude Jennifer’s body… Do not let Diablo cody touch the script! Please only allow to make scripts for movies like juno were her jokes actually work in.

  9. Yay, another chance for Diablo Cody to prove that’s a crappy writer who got lucky once!

  10. I live near the area where they shot the footage of the ruined bridge after the demons had escaped. The bridge is completely gone now and it’s sad that the bridge now longer exists to be used in a remake.

    • I mean “no longer exists”

  11. I’m not a fan of this….I don’t think anyone can replace bruce.

  12. Remake and not original? Fail. Cody helping write, after her brilliantly successful Jennifer’s Body? MASSIVE FAIL. At this rate, I will not be seeing it. This comes from someone who constantly is upgrading the dvds when they come out, goes to ZomBcon to go watch it in a theater, someone who has the posters. Everything so far spells doom minus the fact that Sam, Rob, and Bruce are at least producing.

  13. This is horrible news. Sam has become what all directors become after huge commercial blockbuster success; unimaginative creative voids only capable of grabbing at cash using the newest Hollywood Cash Machine – the Remake/Reboot.

I am a huge Evil Dead fan and:

1st Strike – No Sam directing
2nd Strike – No Bruce as Ash
3rd Strike – Not a sequel but a reboot instead.

And as far as I am concerned Sam – You Are Outta There. (Go spend some time with George Lucas & Tim Burton)

  14. OH joy! Another film maker ruining his great work.

yeah…go hang with Lucas and all the other has beens….

  15. All the Hollywood Execs need a beatdown.

  16. it’s got to have sam raimi’s yellow oldsmobile in it.
