‘Dexter’ Season 8 Premieres in June; Season 9 Still Possible

dexter season 8 premiere date Dexter Season 8 Premieres in June; Season 9 Still Possible

The wait for Dexter season 8 just got much shorter this week, when Showtime Entertainment President David Nevin revealed that the premiere will be moved up from its typical fall debut to this summer, Sunday, June 30. But don’t expect the series to end this year, because there’s still no official answer.

While speaking at the TCA this Sunday, Nevin announced that Dexter will be getting an early start this year, likely to help to bolster the series premiere of Ray Donovan, which stars Liev Schreiber as a “fixer” for the Hollywood rich and famous. The Showtime Entertainment President went on to continue not confirming whether or not this will be the final season of Dexter.

Here’s what he had to say about the possibilities of Dexter season 9:

I’m not making any announcements about when Dexter will end. Before Dexter goes on the air for their next season, there will be a clear end game in place, but I can’t talk about it. The decision of when Dexter will end is ultimately a creative decision and made on creative reasons.

If what Nevin says is true, Dexter will be coming to an end – something series showrunner Sara Colleton already confirmed during season 7: “We wanted to end it this year, but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender.” In fact, it’s the two-season series-ender plan that’s allowing the show to air early without affecting production. However, Nevin isn’t the only one speaking of a possible season 9.

Last month, executive producer Scott Buck said, “I don’t have an answer to that because that’s a Showtime decision.” If Showtime is saying it’s a creative decision and Dexter producers are saying it’s Showtime’s decision, what does that mean? That it’s probably Showtime’s decision. Probably. And if so, it’s likely thanks to Homeland’s success.

Showtime has a wonderful collection of original series, most which never receive the acclaim that they deserve. Since Dexter has proven to be a great lead-in, which helps to drive more eyes to new series, it’s no surprise that they’ll want to use that to their advantage while they still can. With Dexter airing early in June, before Ray Donovan, Dexter season 9 could be ready to air in January 2014, when Showtime premieres their winter series. And since the potential ninth season would air six months later, audiences aren’t likely to complain about the storyline being extended.

Although the Dexter season 7 finale certainly set things up for a likely finale, and the newly cast characters certainly point towards an ending, fans of the series will have to wait for an official announcement on the fate of Dexter Morgan and his series.

  1. I love season 8 so far. I really hope they consider season 9. Their arnt many good shows airing anymore.
I think at the least they should go for the full 10 seasons. One because the plot hasn’t gotten repetitive. Two their is so much more they can do with the plot. This isnt even saying how amazing the main characters are. Seriously they are all amazing actors.
I know they are still doing amazing with the views and ratings every week too. I just hope it’s enough.

    • Agree

  2. I couldn’t imagine Dexter ending. It’s my favorite shoe. I order Showtime thru my cable company specially to watch Dexter. I like the show Weeds, but I can watch for it to come out for rent at Blockerbuster. I CAN NOT wait for Dexter. I HAVE to watch it each week it comes on air. I plan my schedule around it. A little obsessed am I?

  3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7FPFn_O1jU Free From Now !

  4. Dexter needs to end this season. His time has come. If it continues it will based on revenue reasons and not creativity. I can’t bear the thought of this fine show going out on a whimper, or ending badly like The Soprano’s. It needs to end with some kind of a bang. I love the show, and part of me would like it to continue. But many shows have stayed on too long and ended less than stellar. This one has the chance to do it right, and I hope they do it.

    • I agree. Plus I need to get back to my life, getting a little too obsessed with it.

    • Dexter could stay on till season 12 and still end on a high note! It’s the only show of its kind ever, which makes endless possible story lines.

In my opinion, it would be a huge mistake to take it off the air when it is still such a great success for Showtime! In fact, I wouldn,t be watching “Ray Donavan” or “Homeland” if they didn,t happen to follow Dexter!!!

So Showtime, don’t shoot yourself in the foot, and let Dexter run for a few more seasons!

      • I agree highly!!

  5. Dexter is like one of the family. Like CSI and survivor. Dexter needs at least 10 seasons.

  6. I am going on sixty years old and have been a Dexter fan since the first season. I love this guy. I don’t want the Series to end on a whimper. I totally with MikeNstrat they should go out while still strong. It has never gotten boring. The characters are still great. Quinn needs to get himself together. Debra needs to man up. Why was she so upset about Travis Marshall’s death. This guy was killing innocent people for nothing. He needed to be put down. Anyhoo, keep the hits coming. Keeps me looking forward to something. Thx

  7. Hasn’t anyone noticed the following item for pre-order on Amazon? Looks like the end of the series is a Done Deal to me!
    http://www.amazon.com/Dexter-Complete-Series-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B00DXOIEFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375983323&sr=8-1&keywords=dexter+complete

  8. I can see season 9, 10, 11 and so on. The possibilities are endless . With Dexter I cannot see it ever being boring. The twists and turns of story lines could make this show last for years. Anyways I’ll keep fingers and toes crossed and hope for more Dexter seasons. :)

    • 9 – Hannah & Harrison living there life without dexter, end off season 9 Hannah sees dexter. 10- Hannah and Harrison find dexter all questions are asked and answered by season 11 blah blah blah they live happily ever after. I see it!

  9. I have never been so obsessed with a series before in my life. Every week I wait anxiously for the new episode to air. I love the twists and turns and I absolutely admire how Michael C. Hall plays the role of Dexter. Brighthouse recently dropped showtime which in turn made me drop them. That’s how serious I am about this show. I pray they come out with season 9. Cannot get enough!

  10. This show needs to end, and I mean that in a positive way as a diehard fan. I’d put Dexter in my top five series, just under Lost, Sopranos, and The Wire. But a killing machine whom works for Miami Metro Homicide cannot go on forever without being imprisoned, murdered, or running off into the sunset. It’s time to face the music. A “ninth season” just sounds silly in itself.

  11. Yesssss MORE Dexter puhleeze!

  12. Dexter is a bad a!#… I watch season 1 threw season 6 in 3 days.I wanna see more for years to come!

  13. Dexter is an amazing series and I keep up to date with it the plot and story line are always good and how often he is able to almost get caught and outsmart every1 on the police force and stay 10 steps ahead is intense I think if they stop the series at season 8 it will be like slapping yourselves in the face showtime. Don t get me wrong I understand it will have to end and I do want some kinda gory maybe unexpected ending just not yet. The cast is a group of seriously good actors and some of the serial killers they have had were superb like John lithgow etc. I just want it to have a couple more years of success but if it doesnt there is always game of thrones and falling skies which are both good fairly new series

  14. I think dexter show is one of the best show they have for along time I watch the show not only for criminal intent but his sense of humor is great its sad to to see they are thinking of ending it this year; with all those dumb detectives shows we need some dexter in our lives I love him please continue to make the rest of shows.

  15. I shall miss Dexter. I enjoy the show. I enjoy the excellent acting. I don’t like Showtime or TWC for there uncalled for negotiations so that I have to find other ways to watch Dexter. Both companies are being ridiculous and I’m fed up with both of them. Just like our government to deprive we the people with what we want b/c of what they want.. I don’t believe that either one of those companies need more money or at the least need to cut off us paying customers of our enjoyment.

  16. What a wonderful series. We purchased series 1 to 7 on DVD, nothing else on TV matters. The problem now is what do we watch now before the next series is released.

  17. When Dexter goes Showtime goes, that is the only reason we have Showtime

    • US also

  18. All for a season 9! Great, great series!!

  19. I love Dexter. I have been watching from the first season. The only reason I started watching Homeland is because it followed Dexter. Now I like Homeland too. I don’t care for Ray Donovan, cannot get into that show at all. I find the characters and plot very uninteresting. Please give Dexter another season. It’s the best show on Showtime.

  20. Dexter, is the only thing on TV that I truly look forward to watching every week. And the only reason that I subscribe to Showtime.

  21. There just has got to be a season 9, and as far as I’m concearned,, their should be a season 10, 11, and 12.
I really think it is the best searies, that Showtime has ever produced.

    James Roder,
    Hickory, N.C.

  22. dexter is the best show this should definetly not be the end there should be a season 10 11 12 etc

  23. I’m not sold on a season 9 but I did feel unsatisfied with the end of season 8. Make a movie and fix that horrible ending

  24. my wife and I have been super fans of DEXTER. We have it set to record on DVR so we won’t miss a single episode. I know that there could be a dynamic season 9 and even a season 10. I know that we would watch every episode!!! I vote for Season 9 and 10. We will miss watching Dexter on Showtime!!

One comment about how season 8 ended was the death of Debra, I would have liked a different ending without her having to suffer and die the way she did.
In my opinion, her death (if necessary) should have been more graceful.

    • They said it was the series finale unlike all the other seasons where it was Season Finale. Awful ending, I need closure and it didn’t give me closure.

  25. i love this show and im sad to hear that this season 8 was the last ive highly disapointed in how it ended as someone esle has mention there was no closure. and it seem as if everything idea was just being thrown into the episode…. Please dont end this wonderful show this way. Im looking forward to another season. Ill keep my eyes open and will be on the look out

  26. they should and Dexter a couple of seasons ago. I love this Dexter and the actors but the movie becomes stupid. HOW HE SURVIVE IN STORM!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS STUPID!!!!

    • he used that storm to destroy his boat, not himself( it was however , meant to ”kill” him). Ive been watching Dexter from scratch, hes a survivor. and this finale doesn’t convince me. there must be a season 9 !

  27. Have just been watching the final episode of my favourite show – Dexter and I feel like I am loosing a close friend. The storylines are well written and the characters are so credible. I for one will be keeping my fingers crossed for more seasons to come – something this good must continue!

  28. Please continue Dexter. I started season 6 but later started from season 1. I have family and friends watching with me and we all love it. Please Continue Dexter

  29. Continue dexter season 9and make it- anaphylaxie ending!dexter has panier enough in becoming human and désherbes a second chance!if hé has Miller hé has rende rend justice where justice failed…à Fès errons perchais, but justice mâles errons as Wellington but we don!t Knowles about thème!,,And they go through l’île alerter in the mail.Good Luce and super on hour séries.
