‘Dexter’ Season 8 Premieres in June; Season 9 Still Possible

dexter season 8 premiere date Dexter Season 8 Premieres in June; Season 9 Still Possible

The wait for Dexter season 8 just got much shorter this week, when Showtime Entertainment President David Nevin revealed that the premiere will be moved up from its typical fall debut to this summer, Sunday, June 30. But don’t expect the series to end this year, because there’s still no official answer.

While speaking at the TCA this Sunday, Nevin announced that Dexter will be getting an early start this year, likely to help to bolster the series premiere of Ray Donovan, which stars Liev Schreiber as a “fixer” for the Hollywood rich and famous. The Showtime Entertainment President went on to continue not confirming whether or not this will be the final season of Dexter.

Here’s what he had to say about the possibilities of Dexter season 9:

I’m not making any announcements about when Dexter will end. Before Dexter goes on the air for their next season, there will be a clear end game in place, but I can’t talk about it. The decision of when Dexter will end is ultimately a creative decision and made on creative reasons.

If what Nevin says is true, Dexter will be coming to an end – something series showrunner Sara Colleton already confirmed during season 7: “We wanted to end it this year, but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender.” In fact, it’s the two-season series-ender plan that’s allowing the show to air early without affecting production. However, Nevin isn’t the only one speaking of a possible season 9.

Last month, executive producer Scott Buck said, “I don’t have an answer to that because that’s a Showtime decision.” If Showtime is saying it’s a creative decision and Dexter producers are saying it’s Showtime’s decision, what does that mean? That it’s probably Showtime’s decision. Probably. And if so, it’s likely thanks to Homeland’s success.

Showtime has a wonderful collection of original series, most which never receive the acclaim that they deserve. Since Dexter has proven to be a great lead-in, which helps to drive more eyes to new series, it’s no surprise that they’ll want to use that to their advantage while they still can. With Dexter airing early in June, before Ray Donovan, Dexter season 9 could be ready to air in January 2014, when Showtime premieres their winter series. And since the potential ninth season would air six months later, audiences aren’t likely to complain about the storyline being extended.

Although the Dexter season 7 finale certainly set things up for a likely finale, and the newly cast characters certainly point towards an ending, fans of the series will have to wait for an official announcement on the fate of Dexter Morgan and his series.

  1. If they dont sacrify the story and the character development, I am up for it. But as soon as next season start dragging a little a bit, I´ll stop watching.

  2. do season 9 and 10

    • I think they should too!

  3. dexter has to go on they havent finished telling dexters story yet!!

  4. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. It started to drag immediately after season 4. Rita’s death was a shock that couldn’t be topped unless Deb found out about Dexter, which didn’t occur until the end of season 6. In between those two key moments, season 5 was a generally lackluster season, and season 6 (which I preferred to s5) was widely panned, excepting the ending.

Season 7 was excellent, I felt, but even as good as the bid bad was, and his scenes with Dexter were on par with Lithgow, he still felt like filler. I can understand why the showrunners wanted to end it with 7. The LaGuerta incident would have happened much earlier, and the rest of the season would have been pure tension.

They have already set events in motion that can not logically be reversed. If they try to squeeze another season out of this show, the quality is going to plummet, and believability, already strained numerous times throughout the show, will go out the window.

End it next season on an extremely high note, and stop dragging out the decision and let them getting to work to craft a stellar final season.

    • +1

    • This.

      • Is.

    • Season 5 was my favorite season by far. Dexter and lumen were so great together . Bring back lumen!

    • You need an English lesson.. That is all.

      • No, you just need to be able to read complex sentences.

    • first of all your dumb second of all i want to puch you in the face lol hope soooooo!!!!!!

  6. Just don’t kill dexy off man.. He’s too good a character..!!!

    • then it wouldnt be a show called dexter….

    • They pretty much have to in the end. They can’t really leave the story dead ended in Miami right? They can’t really have him pull up stakes and go someplace else. The problem with leaving Dexter alive is that it’s already determined thathe has an addiction to his killing so the story would go on forever if he doesn’t die. I guess they could get cute and make him lose his identity and memory through some accident, but that’d be hokie because it could always come back.

The question is how does he go out? Does he get killed by his girfriend, sister, or someone else he tangles with? Or does he finally get exposed for what he is and get killed by co workers? The second would be more difficult for people to accept.

There’s the strong possibility that at some point Deb will think she needs to stop him and kills him. What’s really going to be interesting though when they start back is where her head is now that she not only skirted the line, but jumped way over it half way to Dexter’s territor now that she killed an innocent in order to save him. I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens next now that she had that life changing moment…..She was cracking up prior to that so what happens next? Does she discover she had some of the Dexter’s Dark Passanger in her too? That was one of the best ends of a Dexter season that they ever had

      • I’d say that he takes he’s own life, maybe he’s going to pick up and leave but then because of something the main season villian has done before Dexter kills him/her if he does leave it now means leaving Debra in the firing line for the Miami Police Department. Leading to him to have to kill himself placing all blame for Lugerta’s death and the other deaths on himself, leaving Debra innocent.

That way all the plot ends are neatly tied up and Dexter goes out sacrificing himself for the one person he really truly cared about.

        • This is what I’m thinking. He should come to realize that all the flashbacks with Harry training him never actually occurred, he just imagined them like he imagines Harry in the present. He realizes that Harry never knew about his “Dark Passenger”, and would be disgusted with him. He then decides to kill one more killer, and offs himself.

  7. For god sakes, end the show. Season 7 finale ended well and set it up for a good way to end it. All about money.

  8. They are definitely extending the show into season 9 (who knows maybe even 10). Its a real shame because last season was great and I think that it would have been the perfect opportunity to transition into the final season.

Also, while I like the June move personally, I don’t really think moving this show to the summers is such a great idea.

  9. I love the move to June. I’ll be watching Dexter at 9 and the final episodes of Breaking Bad at 10…

  10. Given how Season 8 ended, I think the writers should take Dexter and Debra in a dark direction and wrap it up. It is just too difficult to sustain any show through too many seasons.

    • Agreed..Especially since we’ve seen him goe from being really super carefule and in control the first couple seasons to a person who seems to wing it more and more. You can’t just keep sneaking by within millimeters without it finally catching up with you. To make the character continue doing that would really make the character weak

  11. i dont even know how they can go past season 9.

  12. I’m from Scotland and always gave to wait a year after dexter had been released to watch it. But I think dexter has been great up to season 6! I cannot wait for season 7. But if dexter has been found out then there is only so far the show can go on before it takes the exitment

    • are you retarded? stream it.

  13. Excitement away**. But all up for season 9 from what iv saw

    • Robert, you can watch every episode of every season that has aired on television at:
That way you’ll be caught up and can continue to watch the show when the new season premieres as the episodes are added within minutes of it airing on t.v.

  14. i hope they don’t kill dexter.

killing the anti-hero/villainous main character is too predictable and cliche. definitely too cliche for a show like dexter which has thrived the most when it has been ‘different’.

    • Not when to keep him alive defies logic. Doing what he does and doing it with more and more risk has to come to a conclusion somehow…..And you know he’ll never stop. So death is the logical conclusion to Dexter’s story

  15. I love Dexter, and would be really saddened to see the show end, however at some point it has to or it will be dragging it out too far. I think it should end with Dexter Finding out he don’t have long to live, so decides to teach his son how to unleash his dark passenger.( dont forget harrison see his mother murdered just like dexter ) That way if the show ever does decide to start again one day they can call it Dexter’s shadow. I think that would be awesome :D

  16. lets be honest here dexters story began in blood and it will end in blood

  17. This might sound really crazy but, what if Harrison grows up and becomes just like Dexter? Continuing the show in that format. Lol

  18. Season 7 was pretty good I think the reason they moved dexter to end of June is they know it’s ending this yr or next n plan on putting shameless in the sept slot

But dexter can’t end yet I’m still hooked

  19. Here is my prediction…

Deb will go crazy, she will start trying to do what Dex does (keeping in mind that she was not trained as well as Dex), but she keeps slipping up, and getting crazier. Eventually she ends up killing people without any proof, and the some of them end up being innocent. Dex ends up needing to put her down. He becomes so distraught that he takes his own life. Harrison gets adopted, by a cop…

    • By Angel.

Dex’s adopted dad (cant remember his name) ends up being his real dad. He slept with Dex’s mom and got her pregnant. That is why he adopted him, but hot Brian.

    • Can’t be. We know Dexter’s Dad died. In season 1 we learned that when he was young Dexter needed a blood transplant, and that because of Dexter’s blood type, that needed to be drawn from his biological Father. The father himself turns up dead in season 1 and Dexter does a DNA check. No way Harry was his biological father.

    • We already know his real dad died because he performed that dna test in the 1st season. Dexter performed the dna test because he thought his dad was dead. It caused him to question his adoptive dad. Remember? His brother brian, deb, and rita all helped move his real dads stuff out of the house.

    • had this thought too, but there was a dna test :(

  21. I just heard of this show a little over a month ago. And after the first episode I was HOOKED!!!! I just could not stop watching or even stop thinking about what was going to happen next. This show had enthralled me so much that I had watched all seven seasons already, and can NOT WAIT till June 30th. I would LOVE to see this show go on and on for as many seasons as possible! You know like friends did, LOL :)

    • thats funny….i just did the same exact thing. only in it took me a month and a half

  22. It doesn’t have to end in death, Dexter gets caught and is sent to Prison sounds like a much better outcome, and somehow managing to make harrison become dex #2 might be a plausible added twist.

  23. This show is positioned to do what I have always wanted a series to do, but no one has the guts for, and that is an unannounced series finale.

  24. I see no reason to end this show so prematurely. Any show with recurring success just doesn’t get Cut short in 8 seasons. There are shows that have dragged on for well over 10 seasons and don’t even have the same success and popularity as this show. With the death of LaGuerta, I can see why an ending could be falling into place soon…but why not take this show in a “Suspicion cleared” Season. Have Dexter dealing with personal issues like Deb and Hannah and his family structure, have him rededicate himself to killing. There are many directions you can take this show and while it makes sense to end it now, why? Because LaGuerta was killed off? Because Deb found out Dexter’s secret at the end of Season 6? I just don’t see why they are rushing to end a show with this much success and only has been around for 6 years.

  25. It would be great to finish the show with Dexter’s son accidently shoot him, killing him after playing with Dexters’ gun. This would have the potential to have a follow up series later The Son Of Dexter.

  26. Dexter rules keep the seasons commiing

  27. it has to stay on i will be lost w/o it and micheal c hall just makes ,y nights better

  28. I just hope it doesn’t end with the “crime don’t pay” cliche. That might be
acceptable in a 2hr movie, but a character we’ve grown to love going on 8
    seasons, deserves more.

  29. Please Please Make Season 8,9,10,11,12,13 etc… :)Dexter is the only show or movies I watch.. I LOVE it !!!!!
