‘Dexter’ Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series – No Season 9

dexter season 8 premiere date Dexter Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series No Season 9

After months of contradictions regarding the future of Showtime’s hit series, CBS Corp. president Les Moonves confirmed this week that Dexter will come to an end after season 8. But even with news coming from the top, is there still a chance that everyone’s favorite Dark Passenger could return for season 9?

While speaking at the Access Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, CBS Corp.’s longtime boss referred to this year’s June premiere of Dexter as the “last season.” Although this news goes against what Showtime president David Nevin has been saying, it does fall in line with what producers of the show have been saying for over a year.

In December 2011, Nevin kicked-off the final season confusion, saying that the show’s writers and producers were already working on a way to bring Dexter to an end in season 8. As we now know, Nevin’s initial comments were a result of an agreement he made with producers to push the final season of Dexter to season 8 instead of season 7, which was the original plan. One month later, Nevin began trumpeting the possibility of a Dexter season 9. It wasn’t until June 2012 that Dexter producers finally weighed in on what’s really happening.

Five months after Nevin’s comments, longtime Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton revealed the fact that, after agreeing with Showtime to delay the final season by a year, the show would absolutely end in season 8:

From the very beginning, when I first started developing the pilot, I always knew it would be a seven-year arc for this series. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show, but I never want it to get old and stale. I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end. It’s always wise to know when it’s time to leave the stage before you’re asked to leave the stage.

After Colleton made her comments, what followed was a series of back-and-forth, contradictory statements from Nevin and Colleton about the future of Dexter, essentially creating a confusing non-battle between the people who make the show and Showtime, the company that pays for the show. Considering Dexter was one of Showtime’s first to receive such high acclaim, it soon became obvious that the cable network didn’t want to let go of their golden goose, even if producers (and fans) knew that it was time to exit.

So what about the future of Dexter? Is season 9 still a possibility?

Even though word came down from the head of CBS Corp., which owns Showtime, there’s still a slim chance that television’s trend of uncommon “sweetheart” deals (Charlie Sheen & FX; Robert Kirkman & FIC) could lead to Dexter returning for one more season. Although Dexter season 9 is highly unlikely, whatever events are likely to happen in the upcoming (now final) season will certainly draw fans – old and new – to the series, raising ratings. So with the possibility of being able to show the “aftermath” of whatever might happen in season 8, you can’t completely count out Showtime from continuing a good thing. After all, Nevin spoke about Dexter season 9 just two months ago.

That being said, with Showtime set to roll out two new series, Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, in the coming months (among other projects), it’s likely that Nevin and others will begin to focus on their other (hopefully) hit series and allow Dexter to exit as planned. But if there’s anything that seven seasons of Dexter has taught us, it’s that you can never guess what the Dark Passenger will do – or be “forced” to do – next.

  1. Dexter 100% has to come back with a Season 9. It cannot end that way, it could continue and till have the fan base it has. It isn’t likely to become one of those series that people wish would just stop being made just yet! It cannot be left on such a cliff hanger, what about his son and Hannah? Are the detectives still after them? What about Debra? Is she gonna get a funeral? It HAS TO CONTINUE! There isn’t a program our there like this and Season 9 has to be a must surely? So easy to do a season 9!!!!!!!

  2. I’ve just finished watching the last episode of season 9 and it’s just behind breaking bad as my favourite tv show (I’ve watched a lot of shows) This ending was brilliant in one way yet totally left me wanting more, when you compare this ending to the breaking bad one, breaking bad comes up trumps because they’d left no stone unturned. What will happen next is all I can think to myself with Dexter, there are so many possibilities that another season is needed for closure of Dexter, Hannah, Harrison and more importantly the worldwide fanbase that tune in. WE DESERVE MORE!!!

    Rant Over

P.S. In season 9 he should go looking for Hannah and Harrison, eventually find that they’re in danger and go all Liam Neeson on Argentina ass!

  3. Dexter has to come back!!!! And Deb shouldnt had to die. She’s one of my favorite in this tv serial. She’s lovely, funny, arrogant, and absolutely entertaining me in every episode. Let her come back again whatever the next story will be.

  4. I totally loved the last episode of Dexter. Kept me guessing and mostly got a finale I didn’t expect. That being said I truly believe we NEED more of Dexter. It has to have unanswered questions answered. With Hannah and Harrison out there anything is possible. Dexter needs to figure out who he is as a human being and reconnect with his son.

  5. Dexter is 1 of the best shows I have seen. I really hope they bring season 9 back!

  6. I believe that there should be a season 9. The cliff hanger that they left us on has two many question in our head. I no theres probably not much that they could say or do in season 9 but at lest make a couple episodes , you don’t even have to make it 12, make it at lest 5. It will help the dexter fans be a ease.

  7. Please bring dexter back, it cant end like this.. the majority of fans say it should come back, and I garuntee the ones who say it shouldn’t would still watch it… we need at least one more season.. he should re-unite with hannah and harrison

  8. I knew it every time find a series i love they cancel it or its over i dont want it to be Dexter is awesome and needs to continue

  9. I think they could drag the show out for two seasons without it getting stale no problem. That gives them two seasons to introduce Dexters new life, and tie all the loose ends. DEXTER ALWAYS TIES HIS LOOSE ENDS!

  10. We need more if Dexter !! They could even do a spin off such as following dex in his new life then eventually build to reconnecting with Hannah and Harrison and deb/ Harry his background guidance !! Just a rough thought must say I cried all the way through the last ep from the time deb was in hospital ….

  11. Dexter should come back ,, from the first season onwards dexter is trying to get some human connections and human feelings ,, by the end of season 8 , he is at the brink of getting that ,, and he simply walks away ,, this cant be it ,, we did’nt see dexter all these seasons to watch him go out this way ,, he should live happily ever after with Hannah and Harrison in Argentina .. He also mentioned by the end that his need to kill was no longer much relevent .. This could have played in favour of him having a normal life .. dexter has to come back .. he deserves a better ending …

    • Also in every season everything finds a way back to normal with dexter ..

  12. There needs to be an Episode 9. As Deb would say. “This ending f*cking blows!”

  13. Season 9 I mean

  14. They must get off the screen when they’re at the top of their success!

  15. You have to do a season 9. Totally left me hanging wanting more. Why would dexter leave his son witha killer, she’s the worst kind poisoning people. Season 9 should be dexter finally finds Hannah and Harrison and Harrison grows up to be a killer that dexter has to kill

  16. There are many possibilities for a spinoff or season 9. 8 years have passed now. and Hannah, to her (relief?)/(horror?) realizes that Harrison is exhibiting the same psycopathic tendencies as his father. As Harrison is her only connection to Dexter she has come to love him as her own and begins to nurture this tendency. This builds slowly and she teaches him the code. Meanwhile Dexter, having banished himself to (looks like Oregon) discovers that he indeed cannot ‘straddle the two worlds’ and has gone back to his old ways. So we have to parallel stories developing on their own. Through a series of happenstances Dexter, Hannah and Harrison are reunited quite unexpectedly in pursuit of some notorious killer. And they live happily ever after as a ‘team’ traveling the world doing what they do so well.

Another idea is to have Harrison – we pick up 10/12 years later – with Harrison entering the police academy and joining Miami Metro PD. (By now Hannah as figured out a relatively safe way to live without being chased for her past crimes) although I’d love to see her pursued by federal marshals and Harrison becomes her guardian and protects her. Anyway, Harrison is now with Miami PD and actually working with Batista, Mauska and Quinn. May subplots here: with Batsita and Masuka on the verge of retirement we see that Masuka’s formerly ‘flaky’ daughter has become one of Florida’s most sought after and respected forensic pathologists. Harrison, being the son of Dexter (an icon in the dept) is adored by his fellow officers. Fast forward and Dex has gone back to doing what he does best, and wouldn’t you know it – back in Miami of all places. We see Harrison on the trail of a serial killer wrecking havoc in Miami and eventually comes face to face with his own father. (The possibilities here are endless). Maybe – tangenitally – we could have Quinn and Hannah having some kind of relationship, even if it’s only Quinn acting as sort of father figure to Harrison and dear friend to Hannah.

Of course I know season 9 or spinoff is never going to happen but, hey, you can always be like, ‘hmm, what if’?

  17. Please make a season 9! You can’t end it with him abandoning his son!!

  18. I want to see another season of Dexter! Me and my husband watched it together & we loved it. We We’re committed to watching Dexter! I cannot believe it’s not going to have a season 9! This is VERY DISAPPOINTING!

  19. I will be so let down if there is no season 9 of Dexter…I fell in love with the series from the first episode. I can not stand not knowing if Dexter goes after Hannah and Harrison, What happens with Deb’s death, What Dexter is thinking…We NEED a Season 9!

  20. PLEASE bring dexter back in season 9!!!! I want to find out how he staged his death and if he gets back with Hannah and Harrison!!!! This is definitely my favorite show!!! I was so sad to see deb die!!! She finally came around in dexters life and she just dies!!!! Not fair! PLEASE bring it back!!!!!! Everyone fell for this terrific serial killer and he deserves more and so do we!!!!!

  21. I just love Dexter &’prays that there is a season 9 , 10 . His show is my favorite!!!!

  22. Well, It seems most likely that there’s going to be a season 9. Anyway, the end of the franchise was excellent, as well the saga, during the years, kept being very good and always surprising. Congratulations to everyone involved in the making of Dexter.

  23. There has to be a season 9! I’m like so screwed up from the ending of season 8! Deb can’t die! There is a ton of possibilities for a spin-off! PLEASE BRING BACK DEXTER!

  25. There has to be a season 9!!! I would rather there be millions of seasons of dexter than the other shows that are on TV. Dexter is perfect, his character is amazing. When i first started watching i thought no… but now I’m in tears i just finished the series, there has to be a season 9~~

  26. Bring back season 9, it doesn’t even have to involve any of the other characters,it could be dexters life so far of him leaving Hannah and Harrison and Debs death, it could be about him continuing his killing and reuniting with his son as an older Harrison, anything?! bring back dexter!!

  27. Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Dexter is the s***!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!! Bring it back !!!!!!!

  28. I just saw the las episode of season 8… So I’m hoping that there’s a season 9… That can not be the finale for such an amazing large show. The creators HAVE to come back with new material and make the best next season. They started great, might as well end it greatly with a season 9.
