‘Dexter’ Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series – No Season 9

dexter season 8 premiere date Dexter Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series No Season 9

After months of contradictions regarding the future of Showtime’s hit series, CBS Corp. president Les Moonves confirmed this week that Dexter will come to an end after season 8. But even with news coming from the top, is there still a chance that everyone’s favorite Dark Passenger could return for season 9?

While speaking at the Access Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, CBS Corp.’s longtime boss referred to this year’s June premiere of Dexter as the “last season.” Although this news goes against what Showtime president David Nevin has been saying, it does fall in line with what producers of the show have been saying for over a year.

In December 2011, Nevin kicked-off the final season confusion, saying that the show’s writers and producers were already working on a way to bring Dexter to an end in season 8. As we now know, Nevin’s initial comments were a result of an agreement he made with producers to push the final season of Dexter to season 8 instead of season 7, which was the original plan. One month later, Nevin began trumpeting the possibility of a Dexter season 9. It wasn’t until June 2012 that Dexter producers finally weighed in on what’s really happening.

Five months after Nevin’s comments, longtime Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton revealed the fact that, after agreeing with Showtime to delay the final season by a year, the show would absolutely end in season 8:

From the very beginning, when I first started developing the pilot, I always knew it would be a seven-year arc for this series. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show, but I never want it to get old and stale. I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end. It’s always wise to know when it’s time to leave the stage before you’re asked to leave the stage.

After Colleton made her comments, what followed was a series of back-and-forth, contradictory statements from Nevin and Colleton about the future of Dexter, essentially creating a confusing non-battle between the people who make the show and Showtime, the company that pays for the show. Considering Dexter was one of Showtime’s first to receive such high acclaim, it soon became obvious that the cable network didn’t want to let go of their golden goose, even if producers (and fans) knew that it was time to exit.

So what about the future of Dexter? Is season 9 still a possibility?

Even though word came down from the head of CBS Corp., which owns Showtime, there’s still a slim chance that television’s trend of uncommon “sweetheart” deals (Charlie Sheen & FX; Robert Kirkman & FIC) could lead to Dexter returning for one more season. Although Dexter season 9 is highly unlikely, whatever events are likely to happen in the upcoming (now final) season will certainly draw fans – old and new – to the series, raising ratings. So with the possibility of being able to show the “aftermath” of whatever might happen in season 8, you can’t completely count out Showtime from continuing a good thing. After all, Nevin spoke about Dexter season 9 just two months ago.

That being said, with Showtime set to roll out two new series, Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, in the coming months (among other projects), it’s likely that Nevin and others will begin to focus on their other (hopefully) hit series and allow Dexter to exit as planned. But if there’s anything that seven seasons of Dexter has taught us, it’s that you can never guess what the Dark Passenger will do – or be “forced” to do – next.

  1. First, let us ask ourself!! why should producers and writers continue to producing DEXTER after what happened on season 8 !?

you know if Dexter be close to his son and lover, too much of risks will be following them? right !?

I love DEXTER show, and want to continue for season 9 with more of dramatic

I know my English language is not very well but i think you get the idea !

am Ahmed from Saudi Arabia….. best regards

    • Youknow that there were no risks … Only that he didn’t trust himself with them

  2. (Spoiler)
The way Dexter ended with him just sitting there alone like that can’t end that way!! What if he has forgotten who he is? There was nothing said at the end of it… If they were going to end Dexter this definitely was not the way to do it. It was way too open, and it didn’t even suggest if he was still killing or anything. It was left way too up in the air they should at least do one more season to give Dexter the ending credit that it deserves rather than a bland ending like what we saw.

    • (spoiler)
I totally agree, I meant I was watching the last episode and I honestly thought he was either going to just confess to his crimes or run off I didn’t expect that. I’m not saying that’s a bad way to end a season, that’s a terrific way to end it… if there were another season coming after it. The way this ended was just to confusing, to open. I would have easily settled for him going back to old Dexter, I honestly thought the driver was his next victim till I saw his face.

      • Spoilers:

In the end the way he closed his eye lids and opened them again, I knew he was back. this way I created my own ending.

  3. dexter from season 1 to 7 was about dexter trying to understand human emitions and behaviors so he can adapt and be a normal. In season 8 he finally showed some human emitions as a psychopath and the shiw depicts and by the lost of his sister. why not carry the season inorder to see if he can real be human with his son because. quite frankly he was and absent father to his son and by the lost of his sister and the writer bringing the point of him being a protector and loving big brother in season 8. they should atleast persure it untill.

  4. I really want to see a 9th season of Dexter. I must admit that it’s been a fun journey riding along with the dark passenger for those eight seasons that it premiered, but you must know when to walk away. Although it would’ve been nice to find out if Harrison knows what happened to his Dad and Hanna Mckay is liable to just kill Harrison and start a new life. It’s not like she needs Dexter anymore. She’s free, Dexter on the other hand is a prisoner of his own demise. It’s so sad that Deborah went out like that. I expected her to be able to pull through, quite honestly, she was the only one in Dexter’s life holding him together like a cookie with broken pieces. I do feel a certain way and it’s heart felt that Deborah died that way. She didn’t deserve to go out like that. Also Dexter should’ve died in that storm.

  5. i luv dexter n it should never cum 2 end…n i m lukin forward 4 season 9…

  6. Is there something I can say with little chance there will be another season Dexter?,

Really disappointing ending I was expecting a lot more than that .. I watch this series for a long time and has long since become Dexter My teacher is worked out in his life despite the difficulties I know it’s just a series but it is much more than just a series .. I’m sure a lot of you feels like me and I hope to finish another season it properly and not by dis miserable.

  7. I think that Dexter and the dark passanger should evolve, not into something less but into something greater.

The sociopath turns emotional had been done to death but reality does not work that, the human mind is more resilient than that, a sociopath won´t feel bad about torturing individuals because
he (or she) had been tortured too.

He recruites the childrens of his wife and the Dark passanger creates more of itself for them, he creates an organization, have comrades that following his ideals or the Dark passanger reveals some of the truth of its origins.

    Anyone seen Aeon Flux?

  8. I just got introduced to Dexter about 5months ago by a friend.. And I was consumed with it! I absolutely loved it! DON’T END IT! I’m so sad that the writers chose Deb to die, but I LOVE THIS SHOW!! Please let Dexter come BACK!! Love him:)

  9. worst ending for a series ever! they need to make a season nine and end it much better than season 8!

    • The ending totally was not what I was expecting. Deb dying had me in tears and I can’t imagine a season 9 without her. I also cannot accept to end it with season 8. He loves Hannah and Harrison. Deb died for him to move and be with her. She would have wanted Dexter to go be with them. Him being a lumberjack? That’s crazy…but he told Harrison let me tell him “I love him until I see him again”…it was almost a clue that he eventually will come back. He found himself. No dark passenger. Maybe a small few episodes that show The rest happened for him. Going to Hannah and his Son? or living a new life all by himself? Please bring more Dexter with the vicious serial killer, maybe in another country…lol and happy with Hannah and Harrison. Anything but the sad ending of season 8.

  10. What an awesome ride it was .. I enjoyed every episode thank you michael C hall !! and the ending ? It was better than expected and certainly no one saw that one coming .. I know you feel that you should leave on a high but .. there just isn’t anyone who would not appreciate one more season, we are all dying to see (in bloody ways) to see dexters next moves, so kindly break your vowes just once and kill it one more fnal time ! My regards from Holland

  11. I truly believe there should only be one more season of Dexter, and it should stop a season 9. The season 9 if they make one should be about his journey to get back to his son and Hannah, and the challenges that over come him…. because its a totally mistake to have him end as a logger, would Debra aprove of that hell NO. She died trying to help Dexter start his new life with them….not die for him to abandon them….

  12. I want Dexter back another year

  13. I think they will bring out a 9th season of dexter in a few years, to show the viewers about harrison and how is getting along. Harrison could become a serial killer (like dexter) and they could make a whole new series about harison and could be a good follow-on to watch.

  14. The only reason I pay for showtime is to watch Dexter. No Season 9 means I cancel Showtime because it is the ONLY show worth paying extra on my cable bill for. Just a little something for the Showtime peeps to consider since I know a bunch of other subscribers who will do the same if Dexter doesn’t come back for at least one last season (season 9).

One minute he’s looking forward to his future with his son and true love, Hannah. The final scene we see him missereable and misplaced. That is no way to end a series. What a disappointment. Especially after all of the hints from Dr. Vogle that he may not have been a true sociopath to begin with and was instead part of an experiment, raised to believe he was and trained to think like one. His need to kill transformed into a way to protect his loved ones. He was just beginning to find himself, his real self…and then THE END.
    Boooooooooooo!

  15. he needs to continue cant end like that!!!!!!

  16. I disagree with most of you to be honest. A fitting end in my opinion. If there was to come a season9 what would it be about.. Why not end it at its peak and let it rest? This last moment really makes you wonder how he is doing and that is great because throughout Dexter we had to guess and wonder and so on, so it is actually a fitting end.
Debra is dead, the girl he is in love with and his son are safe. It is a happy ending him sacrificing himself like that for the better of the ones he loves.
I would love a s9 but it would get a bit stale as they said. Thanks for the 8 seasons. Enjoyed every moment and all surprises which cought you offguard ^^

  17. I was amazed how Deb’s death effected me. Brilliant ending; there’s no way Dexter could have lived happily ever after like some suggest.
I’d like to see a feature length movie one day like the Before Sunset trilogy (but darker) with reuniting Dex & Hanna, perhaps following Hanna needing help. It might reveal some issues with Harrison following his abandonment that finds Dex playing his fathers role but with different type of hunger to resolve.
Perhaps Dexter meets Person of Interest & Bourne Identity?

  18. please guys do not stop the Dexter season.. i dont know what happend to me..but u guys should help me…just continue the season..

  19. WHYYYYYYYY WOULD IT END

  20. shutup

  21. As much as I want to see a Season 9, I would really hate Debra not being in it. But if there is a Season 9, I think itll begin with Dexter returning to his family but after years down the road. For ex., Harrison might even be a teenager and Hanna might be with another guy. Just a thought!!!

  22. They should definitely do a Season 9, because it can’t end like this. Dexter should be caught, tried for his crimes, sent to jail, have to rough up some guys in jail, even kill a guy to save a female guard or his cellie. Then form an escape plan, go on the run to say south America to see his kid, then bail out leave the kid and old woman, go meet up with the new chick in London or somewhere nice, then under a new alias get another blood splatter job for some foreign agency, and become like the London Bridge Butcher or something like that. Have his brother back in visions when he gets mad. Have his son start to want to be a cop, who one day catches his dad, and has to be the one to bring him in. Dexter finally agrees to go to jail forever, because he wont kill his son instead. Dexter son should become a detective and by then Quin and Batista will be like high ranks so they will piece together everything about Dokes and have to break it to the new guy, Dexters son. Quin gets shot saving Batista, Batista has to knife fight with Dexter until Harrison approaches right before Dex would have to kill Batista and ask dad to put the knife down. Dex surrenders with no incident. Its raining. Dex is put to death, his son a hero. New show starts, called “Harrison” a show about a homicide detective who had a serial killer dad, so he has a knack for busting killers. The End.

  23. DEFINTLY ther shud b a season 9 on d way dis is not an ending wht we saw
THE DARK PASSENGER will rise agn and Michael hall will com back as DEXTER. hoping for dis to happen just cant wait

  24. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  25. That end had a lot of promise for season 9. You would let him die but now u should make him as new dark-passenger-hero like an revenger who punishes the criminals with different way , sth which keep the criminas alive but shocked…

  26. With blogs like this around I don’t even need website anymore.
I can just visit here and see all the latest happenings in the world.

  27. Dexter is the BESt of The BeSt tv Series i ever seen.

I hope Dexter continue to seson 100. And i hope not dexter dies or somthing i should continue.
    We love u dexter.

  28. Dexter is my favorite tv series, and it cant end that way sitting alone in a cabin he need to find harrison and hannah and mate it better and kill for justice

  29. I really didn’t like much the way Season 8 has end.. I think the producers may think of Season 9 by which we may like the Serial killer’s outstanding finish.. The way Dexter does I never thought it would end like Season 8, and ofcourse it if you never give up he is still alive and can do anything he wants. Want to say Season 1-7 were very good but there’s a disadvantage creating Season 9 is no Debra.. She was the twister at all places.
