‘Dexter’ Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series – No Season 9

dexter season 8 premiere date Dexter Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series No Season 9

After months of contradictions regarding the future of Showtime’s hit series, CBS Corp. president Les Moonves confirmed this week that Dexter will come to an end after season 8. But even with news coming from the top, is there still a chance that everyone’s favorite Dark Passenger could return for season 9?

While speaking at the Access Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, CBS Corp.’s longtime boss referred to this year’s June premiere of Dexter as the “last season.” Although this news goes against what Showtime president David Nevin has been saying, it does fall in line with what producers of the show have been saying for over a year.

In December 2011, Nevin kicked-off the final season confusion, saying that the show’s writers and producers were already working on a way to bring Dexter to an end in season 8. As we now know, Nevin’s initial comments were a result of an agreement he made with producers to push the final season of Dexter to season 8 instead of season 7, which was the original plan. One month later, Nevin began trumpeting the possibility of a Dexter season 9. It wasn’t until June 2012 that Dexter producers finally weighed in on what’s really happening.

Five months after Nevin’s comments, longtime Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton revealed the fact that, after agreeing with Showtime to delay the final season by a year, the show would absolutely end in season 8:

From the very beginning, when I first started developing the pilot, I always knew it would be a seven-year arc for this series. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show, but I never want it to get old and stale. I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end. It’s always wise to know when it’s time to leave the stage before you’re asked to leave the stage.

After Colleton made her comments, what followed was a series of back-and-forth, contradictory statements from Nevin and Colleton about the future of Dexter, essentially creating a confusing non-battle between the people who make the show and Showtime, the company that pays for the show. Considering Dexter was one of Showtime’s first to receive such high acclaim, it soon became obvious that the cable network didn’t want to let go of their golden goose, even if producers (and fans) knew that it was time to exit.

So what about the future of Dexter? Is season 9 still a possibility?

Even though word came down from the head of CBS Corp., which owns Showtime, there’s still a slim chance that television’s trend of uncommon “sweetheart” deals (Charlie Sheen & FX; Robert Kirkman & FIC) could lead to Dexter returning for one more season. Although Dexter season 9 is highly unlikely, whatever events are likely to happen in the upcoming (now final) season will certainly draw fans – old and new – to the series, raising ratings. So with the possibility of being able to show the “aftermath” of whatever might happen in season 8, you can’t completely count out Showtime from continuing a good thing. After all, Nevin spoke about Dexter season 9 just two months ago.

That being said, with Showtime set to roll out two new series, Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, in the coming months (among other projects), it’s likely that Nevin and others will begin to focus on their other (hopefully) hit series and allow Dexter to exit as planned. But if there’s anything that seven seasons of Dexter has taught us, it’s that you can never guess what the Dark Passenger will do – or be “forced” to do – next.

  1. Huh????

The title is “Dexter Season 8 confirmed as end of series – No Season 9″
Then you end by basically saying Showtime are most probably gonna do a season 9.
    What a sausage…

    • WELL MY GOSH IS THERE GONNA BE A SEASON 9 OR NOT

    • If there isn’t a season 9 then show time is really stupid. This is an excellent show and should at least go one more season.

      • so it should go another season so it will be ruined? we got enough of that crap… we don’t need greedy bastards to destroy the show the shouldn’t last it longer then they intended

    • This show is very unique. Not the usual type of TV program or TV series that you will see now a days. So why stop it? Are you guys nuts? you’re spoiling the fun!!!!!!!!

  2. Dexter Needs to be continued I love it !!!!!!

  3. well if everyone wants a season 9, we get season 9 then before you know it they will demand season 10… because this show can go on and on, but at some point it has to end

  4. Imagine the ratings! Everyone thinking it’s going to end, dexter has so many fans.. If a season 9 were to happen ratings would be through the roof and not just in America! There is so much more to do it’s just getting good, and please don’t kill him!!

  5. ENOUGH! ITS TIME FOR DEXTER TO PAY THE PIPER THE WRITERS GOT HIM OUT OF CHARACTER ESPECIALLY WITH DEXTER RAPPED AROUND HANNAHS FINGER. HOPEFULLY HANNAH SETS DEXTER UP B-4 SHE GETS ON THE PLANE TO ARGENTINA. DEXTER IS SO PREDICTABLE RUNNING AFTER HER TO NOT LEAVE AND STAY W/HIM SHE MUST KNEW HE WOULD SO SHE CAN PLANT EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM AND COPY HIS M.O. SO HE AND DEBRA GET WHATS COMING TO THEM. CAN HANNAH REALLY FORGIVE DEXTER SO EASILY AND HE SO NAIVE IF HE BELIEVES AND TRUST HER, POETIC JUSTICE FOR BEING SO STUPID.

    • Do you not get it? Are you seriously a Dexter Fan? Have you seen every episode since Ep 1 S1? I don’t think you have to see and watch how Dexter has evolved how the show its self has evolved and created a sense of and that people grow and change and most importantly, Love. Even “serial” killers, but he has changed, as a father, a friend, a brother, a husband a boyfriend and yes what he did to hanah as terrible but she deserved it and if you have EVER been in love then you will know that you can forgive and attempt to understand she knows what and who she is. So does he, you are completely wrong and a season 10 would be fantastic but probably not realistic. Which is fine, serial killers like trinity don’t get happy endings but Dexter is far more than just a “serial” killer. the WRITERS style is never for a happy ending and that my friend is the difference.

  6. NO MORE SEASONS GET OVER IT! IT’S OVER! SERIAL KILLERS DONT GET TO HAVE A HAPPY ENDING!

    • Uh…it’s fiction, doofus. Serial killers can have any f***ing ending they want. Man, do you need some therapy????

  7. There’s so much more they could do with this show. Michael C. Hall is Awesome. All the cast is amazing. I hope he is able to leave with Harrison and Hannah if they do end it this season. I hope Deb goes back to Quinn and they move on. That could leave it open to make a return if another nemesis comes back to Miami, Dexter could come back,if he doesn’t end up wanted before he leaves. Just don’t kill Dex or Deb off. The show is too good to end the books are great. The ratings have got to be as high as the walking dead if not higher. I think ShowTime should definitely keep the suspense of new situations going. I Love Dexter. One More Season Please!!!!

    • I not only agree with this comment, but I don’t want the show to end – EVER! I love Hall (Dexter) He is such a good actor, one of a kind. There is so much that can be done with this show to keep it going, yet bring about constant changes. I have never become disinterested. By the way, I am 73 years old, and this is my all time FAVORITE show. Please don’t take away what has brought such enjoyment. —————- You have a real winner here, don’t throw it away. ——–By the way, I will not be watching the new shows which are sex this, and sex that. It is the sex topic that has become old hat.

  8. I have fell in love with so many shows and characters…I agree w just about everyone, DEXTER goes on!!! I mean really, this show with another 2 seasons could go ANYWHERE! and its so TRUE that it is just really getting DEEP with Deb now involved in a twisted web of lies, producers and showtime…. this is a golden goose as stated, it IS NOT BORING OR GETTING OLD, JUST GETTING SO GOOD! listen, LISTEN TO ALL YOUR MILLIONS OF FANS and just give us a lil bit more, …and yes, we will still then want more, but where the series is at NOW, there is NO WAY you should let us down,…..5 years from now…”oh yes, Dexter, I remember….” yea, remember how they let us all down and ended the series TOO SOON, NOT, “oh YES!, Dexter! The BEST SHOW EVER TO AIR ON TELEVISION”!!!! This show DESERVES to be A television ICON, like Friends….BUT weirder, for the stranger, for the BETTER.

    • Please CONSIDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. The future of this or any show is based on money. If ending the show on a high note could make the future Showtime series more attractive, i.e. profitable, they will end it. If continuing Dexter into season 10 promises to be more profitable, then it will be continued.
The corporation exists for profit only. They care about what the people think, only to the extent of viewership/marketability and resulting profit.
The only question that needs to be entertained is, “Will ending or continuing Dexter be more profitable?”
Answer that, and you will know Dexter’s future.

  10. Dexter is what we talk about everyday at work, home and with friends. It’s not time to end such a great series. I can not stand the thought of no more Dexter
    ,

  11. As big a fan as I am of Dexter I’m actually glad the creators are choosing to end the show now rather then wait for it to overstay it’s welcome.

    • It’s too rushed… Especially now… There is not enough time in this season to end it the way show like this should be. It would be a true disservice to the show to just to a way with the chapters as simply as possible just because you told yourself originally you only wanted so many seasons. The arch that she originally wanted didn’t happen as spectacularly as it should have… Not yet anyhow. I say that theyat least attempt to close the show out the way it deserves after creating such complex chapters over a series of years. Don’t screw the audience or yourselves with the simplest of substitutes for your outgame.

  12. Yes, yes, yes to Season 9 …please do it!

  13. There is too much to close up. They would have to do a ton a scrabbling to end the show the way it should from this point. I hope the writers and creates of the show don’t just throw some lame ending at us as a hope of exciting while the gettins good. Debs character arc only truly starts at the end of last season… You can’t just close it put so simply if you want to end the show the same way you started it… On a high and anticipated note. . . please don’t end the show yet with so much still to tell.

  14. Look i kno some things die down but Dexter is nothing like the other series. U said it urself, you dont ever know wat the dark passanger will do next. But i do kno that the DARK PASSANGER has entered my life n i cant live without it.
i kno i shouldn’t b saying this but i havent paid to get my gas cut back on bcause i have to pay my 146 dollar cable.
What im sayin is simply wat Dexter and all the other true fans feel, ” We can’t live without our DARK PASSANGER. I kno it takes a Mastermind to keep writing such Magic and/or keep ratings up, but it took a Mastermind to come up with the best hit series i’ve ever experienced n my life.
I mean DEXTER is shitting on BeingHuman, Grimm, Bates Motel, even the new HANIABAL. IM JUST SAYN, U CAN’T INTRODUCE THE WORD TO CRACK(dexter) AND TAKE IT AWAY AFTER 8HITS. IT WOULDNT B FAIR, JUST IF U COULD LET US HAVE 12SEASONS, like most shows that have 12seasons & only should have 3. Thanks for your time

  15. More Dexter, I say ride that horse till it drops, this show could go no fore years and still be good. They can do so much more. I love this show. I would watch for years to come.

  16. Don’t end the season now… Do it 5 more times.. or more

    • right on it! totally agree!

      • Hell yeah. I’ll watch this show for the rest of my fricken life, if it goes that far lol.

  17. As a fan of Dexter I would love a season 9, however if the spoilers are correct and Debra dies…..I am not sure if it would be the same without her.

  18. yes do more dexter series pls pls pls dexter is my all time fav show pls dont kill him off or end the show pls let it last 10 seasons

  19. is this ture is dexter season 9 going to happen (Dexter season 9 premieres Sunday, June 30 @9pm on Showtime)

  20. If there is a season I think they should bring it back around to the books. In the end Cody showed signs he too had a dark passenger. The series never touched on that. There is no Harrison in the books but maybe that story could focus on him instead of Cody in the series.

  21. DEXTER IS GREAT ENDING IT NOW WOULD SUCK DUE TO THE SEASON EARLY PREMIER. .
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END.
WITH DEXTER IT CANT END.. HE MAKES THE WORLD A SAFER PLACE…

  22. should make “Dexter in Argentina”

  23. Why would they end dexter!? That is such a stupid mistake! That is the greatest show of all time! I’ve watched every single episode of dexter n I find myself with one episode left thinking why on earth would they end the best show on cable tv!? Every sunday I look forward to watching dexter! I dunno one person who wantsthis show to end! Look at NCIS in the 11th season n still the number #1 show on broadcast television! FIGURE IT OUT! WE ALL WANT MORE…DEXTER NEEDS TO CONTINUE! DONT BE STUPID N MAKE THE MISTAKE OF ENDING IT! THERE IS WAY MORE MONEY TO BE MADE N MY HEART STILL BEATS FAST WATCHING IT WONDERING WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT! IF NOT MORE NOW THAN IN THE BEGINNING! EVERY SEASON GETS BETTER N BETTER! PLEASE DONT END DEXTER WITH SEASON 8 OR 9 FOR THAT MATTER! FINISH 10 YEARS STRONG IF NOT LONGER! PLEASE!
    DEXTER FAN…
    SHAUN

  24. Michael C. Hall said on Letterman that he’d love to see the final season be a series of episodes, each of them with a different ending, and then the public is left guessing :)))

    • That is truly an amazing idea.. why the hell isn’t it happening. A series of episodes full of possible endings. That’s GOLD. Freakin’ inception.

      • It IS brilliant…why aren’t they doing it?!

  25. I’ve followed this show ever since it started.. even after my brain injury causing me to lose my memory, I re-watched it again, with a fresh perspective mind you, and I still love it. I love Dexter and I really wish it wouldn’t end. There’s so much more potential, numerous fans not wanting it to end.. I understand that you should leave everyone wanting more, but the thing is no one will ever get tired of this show. Ever. Specially with how things are going.

I’m interested in seeing Harrison grow up. How Dexter’s choices and lifestyle impact his son. What about Batista? My favorite. How is his life as a sergeant.. how will he react when the day not only that Dexter’s crimes are brought to light but that Debra helped cover for him surfaces? What about Jaimee, how does she react to the whole Debra and Quinn back together? What’s up with Masuka’s “daughter” and her objective in the series? What about Miller? Didn’t she get sergeant? How come I never saw her again? Did she freakin’ drop dead like what the hell is that girls story… all these things.. all these questions and SOOOO many more you just can’t answer with one last episode and you can’t leave it hung and dry either.. it just wouldn’t make sense. Owe it to your fans.

    We love you, Dex.

  26. No freaking way! It can’t end!

  27. Why can’t anyone just answer the question? Yes or no?

    • Don’t be whiny, precious: they can’t answer because there ISN’T an answer yet. Duh.

  28. It can’t end….let Dexter continue its the best T.V. show ever

  29. Show time needs to continue Dexter , one of the best shows on tv . Dexter season 9 pleaseeeeee !!!!!
