‘Dexter’ Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series – No Season 9

dexter season 8 premiere date Dexter Season 8 Confirmed as End of Series No Season 9

After months of contradictions regarding the future of Showtime’s hit series, CBS Corp. president Les Moonves confirmed this week that Dexter will come to an end after season 8. But even with news coming from the top, is there still a chance that everyone’s favorite Dark Passenger could return for season 9?

While speaking at the Access Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, CBS Corp.’s longtime boss referred to this year’s June premiere of Dexter as the “last season.” Although this news goes against what Showtime president David Nevin has been saying, it does fall in line with what producers of the show have been saying for over a year.

In December 2011, Nevin kicked-off the final season confusion, saying that the show’s writers and producers were already working on a way to bring Dexter to an end in season 8. As we now know, Nevin’s initial comments were a result of an agreement he made with producers to push the final season of Dexter to season 8 instead of season 7, which was the original plan. One month later, Nevin began trumpeting the possibility of a Dexter season 9. It wasn’t until June 2012 that Dexter producers finally weighed in on what’s really happening.

Five months after Nevin’s comments, longtime Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton revealed the fact that, after agreeing with Showtime to delay the final season by a year, the show would absolutely end in season 8:

From the very beginning, when I first started developing the pilot, I always knew it would be a seven-year arc for this series. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show, but I never want it to get old and stale. I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end. It’s always wise to know when it’s time to leave the stage before you’re asked to leave the stage.

After Colleton made her comments, what followed was a series of back-and-forth, contradictory statements from Nevin and Colleton about the future of Dexter, essentially creating a confusing non-battle between the people who make the show and Showtime, the company that pays for the show. Considering Dexter was one of Showtime’s first to receive such high acclaim, it soon became obvious that the cable network didn’t want to let go of their golden goose, even if producers (and fans) knew that it was time to exit.

So what about the future of Dexter? Is season 9 still a possibility?

Even though word came down from the head of CBS Corp., which owns Showtime, there’s still a slim chance that television’s trend of uncommon “sweetheart” deals (Charlie Sheen & FX; Robert Kirkman & FIC) could lead to Dexter returning for one more season. Although Dexter season 9 is highly unlikely, whatever events are likely to happen in the upcoming (now final) season will certainly draw fans – old and new – to the series, raising ratings. So with the possibility of being able to show the “aftermath” of whatever might happen in season 8, you can’t completely count out Showtime from continuing a good thing. After all, Nevin spoke about Dexter season 9 just two months ago.

That being said, with Showtime set to roll out two new series, Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, in the coming months (among other projects), it’s likely that Nevin and others will begin to focus on their other (hopefully) hit series and allow Dexter to exit as planned. But if there’s anything that seven seasons of Dexter has taught us, it’s that you can never guess what the Dark Passenger will do – or be “forced” to do – next.

  1. this makes me a sad panda

  2. Good idea to end it here. Season 6 was crap (and jumped the shark a few times), but thankfully they managed to make Season 7 relevant again and open doors to newer possibilities that may or may not be good. I hope Season 8 will go out greatly.

    • actually i thought season 7 was worse that 6, except for the last episode. but i do think that was a one time thing and they can really improve in season 8 and even 9 (should they decide to)

  3. Dexter restored my will to live, literally. Please don’t kill off the Dark passenger or his driver, as then mine will have no role model or code to follow 😉 Dex forever!

    • Man, seriously? 😉

    • That’s messed man; if you’re at all serious get psychological help.

  4. nooooooooooooooooooooooo i dont want it to endddddd this is very bad news noooooo

  5. I’d say it’s good news. After season 7 the show doesn’t have many directions left to go before becoming utterly ridiculous. Time to end it properly, without entering Lost/Fringe territory. This show should end with nuked fridges jumping sharks.

    • *WITHOUT nuked fridges…

  6. Not to be a nitpick, but you had season 9 in your head so much in this article, I don’t blame you for the error. At the end of the article you said, “season 9 premieres Sunday, June 30.” Should be 8.

Maybe you’re a time traveller though, and you were speaking of next year when they actually do continue into season 9.

  7. Thank god, I’m glad this show is going off. Showtime always has the worst shows.

    • Obvious troll is obvious.

      • +1

    • Ummm. kill your self, Dexter said you dont meet code…

  8. There is just too much to sum up for the season to end at 8 go to 9 with enuff time to make all the possibilities possible for the bet ending not some half ass way to end it

  9. Dexter should continue till Season 19

  10. @ThomasM How am I a troll?

    • What other point do you have to be here other then to add in that your glad a show you hate is ending? If you hate Dexter and knew this was about Dexter why did you read this article other then to add some asinine comment about how you hate Showtime.

      • Because they are entitled to their opinion, it’s called ScreenRANT after all, who wants a world full of positive praise?

        • Well not really because if they hate Dexter what was the point in coming here. The only actual point he had in commenting on this article was to confirm to the rest of us that he hates Dexter and Showtime.

I could go onto a topic about FIFA just to let FIFA Fans know I’m not looking forward to the game since I think it’s a pile of crap but what would they accomplish? Letting people who are fans of the game know I think it’s a bad game? I’m not saying comment sections should be nothing but praise but if you know 100% you hate something there’s not much point going into an article about it.

  11. I love the show but I rather it end at season 8 with him getting away, that way if they wanted to they could starts doing exclusive Dexter movies.

  12. Let Dexter die with dignity. The double meaning relating to both the character and the actual show is purposeful.

  13. there can only be so many serial killers in miami. love the show, but please end it

  14. I’ll be sad but as I’ve said for a while it’s time for the show to end.
My bet is still that if Dexter dies it will be Deb who kills him. Deb can only be happy if Dex is completely out of her life. Sure he can end up in Argentina with Hannah but IMO that would be a weak way to end.

  15. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  16. honestly dexter has been doing impossible kills lately. it makes the show harder for me to believe. i read the books and they too can be over the top but the tv is dragging out. im truly sad to hear this is ending and the following is continuing (even though dexter is getting old, i prefer it over the following0

  17. If Season 8 does good in the ratings, a 9th is a strong possibility.

  18. Dexter should never stop recast if need be and keep going. Why stop a great show. Harrison Morgan (what happens to him)What happens to Dexters step children. The son of Trinity (what happens to him)All the illegitamate children as a result of the unprotected sex of Brian Morgan. Lumen is she really threw. Does Deb have a dark passenger? I could go on an on as I believe the show should go on and on. Kind of a dark soap opera. Writers, great job. Why should it ever end creativity has no end. Writers If you keep going I”ll follow you to which ever network you go to. Once again great job, great premise. I think everyone has a bit of a dark passenger, for good, in them. See you on season 40. We”ll re-visit the end of the show thing then.

    • I also want more Lumen.

      • YES! they should bring Lumen back…in a 9th season :)

    • Soap operas suck.

  19. I suppose it is time for Dexter to end but I do believe it could elegantly go on into a season 9 and end right before it got stale but that is an iffy one. I love Dexter right now but it is true some shows push it to long. So maybe it is time to end Dexter and I will just be stuck missing it while I watch rerun’s 😛

  20. Dexter was no more than a 5 season show at best. Season 3, 5, and 6 were bad. S7 managed to be damn good, so it’s a fitting ending here.

Don’t get me wrong though, when season 2 aired, Dexter was THE best show on television.

    • Season 3 was the worst season, I agree. Season 5 with Lumen was one of my favorites. And season 6 with the Doomsday Killers? That’s when I saw my first episode and have been hooked ever since. A bad season of Dexter is still dang good compared to everything else.

    • I have to disagree, season 7 was only ok, but the Hannah McKay story was irrelevant and almost destroyed that season. I also felt that the whole Koshka Brotherhood storyline was more like something I’d expect to see in Law and Order: SVU- so tired and overdone, unbecoming of a show as unique as Dexter.

  21. Debra should never have found Dexter out. Would love to see her join Dexter on a kill. Dexter shows that little bit of evil and darkness we all have buried inside.

  22. From th uk i never saw dexter, and after a year of hearing my aunty bang on about how gud it was i started watching season 1 on dvd at my parents n got completely hooked, i admit mayb not a healthy obsession, but th 3 of us saled thru season 1-4! My auntys box set, then on a visit in th states i got season 5 n watched it th week i was there, n brought it again in th uk with season 6, cudnt buy season 7 anywhere n cudnt wait to screen in th uk i went back toth states to subsribe n watch it there with no interest to anything else th channel shows, i know im sad for being so obsessed but i find each of dexter episodes have funny moments, sum emotional, all with satifying kills, have me in suspense n i never know wots going to happen. Im completely GUTTED its ending, is by far the best thing iv ever seen on tv, dvd etc. I do hope that ” dexter” n debs both get sum good roles after this in sumthing good as theyv been amazing in this. Favourite episodes 1, 4, 5, 6 n 7 lol still love 2 n 3 though.
N if you dont like it dont watch it! Its the method i use to not watch stuff im not into!

    • I am so with you about dexter, it is the only show I really care about watching. It’s a sad day for dex fans

  23. Season 9 premiers June 30th? Or season 8? The bottom of this page states it’s season 9 but I’m sure it’s 8.

  24. Please don’t kill Dexter . He deserves to live.

  25. Dexter is the only show my whole family loves to watch. There are always creative ideas out there. Does Miami have to be the only place to kill, maybe Argentina. There are always killers to kill out there. Guess I can save on my cable bill cause there is no need for Showtime anymore, dexter was the only show I waited for. It’s a sad day :(

  26. I feel if they want to continue dexter, they would have to end it and then make another series of dexter following the books a lot closer.

  27. leave dexter to finish his job…doing the public a service

  28. Dexter best ever

  29. If season 8 is the final…. what about a movie?
