We may still be months away from the Dexter season 7 premiere, but that doesn’t mean we have to wait to find out the answers to questions we’ve been asking since last season’s finale. Providing an in-depth look at the this upcoming season, executive producer Sara Colleton reveals (almost) everything we could want to know about what’s next for everyone’s favorite blood spatter analyst.

Speaking with TV Guide, Colleton reveals what Dexter tells Deb about his “hobbies,” her reactions to everything, how it will impact their relationship, how it will impact her job and much more…

Needless to say: READ ON AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Debra and Dexter Morgan Dexter season 6 Showtime Dexter Season 7 Details: Dexters Answers, Debs Reaction & More

The Answers

Following Deb walking in on Dexter in the season 6 finale, we found out that Deb would know everything. Though many assume she put pieces together herself, it now appears that Dexter becomes an open book to his sister – even revealing some information about Harry’s involvement:

If the series-long quest for Dexter was to finally have someone who really knows him — well, be careful what you wish for because Deb now knows everything and that’s a game-changer.

She will learn all about Harry training Dexter and that is another thing that is going to rock her world.

Deb’s Reaction

What do you when you find out your brother is a serial killer? Better question: what do you do when you find out that the (adopted) brother that you love is a serial killer? Answer: ask yourself a lot of questions:

So now what does she do? Does she turn him into the police? Is she repulsed by him? Can she continue to love him? Does she feel an odd relief that finally she understands some fundamental part of him that always felt elusive? Dexter was always elusive and Debra always thought it was because of her, and now she knows it wasn’t about her, it was about him really protecting her.

But she is the head of the homicide division and so it has to really affect her sense of justice and the whole system. It’s a really challenging year for her to juggle.

Dexter’s Reaction

The moment that Dexter has feared has finally come true; Deb knows the truth. When the closest person in Dexter’s life finds out who he truly is, even his Dark Passenger can’t stop these new, terrifying emotions. Has the monster grown a heart?

He’s never had to deal with these kinds of emotions — regret, guilt, a sense of having let Deb down and also, obviously, the gnawing suspicion that at any time, she could have him arrested.

It is about things he’s never experienced before, which are regret, responsibility, shame, betrayal, all of those things. Also, it’s the flip side of wanting to be known, and then once you are known, there’s a loss of freedom. It comes with heavy responsibility, so he’s dealing with a lot of emotions that he’s never had before, and never been allowed to feel before or allowed himself to feel before.

The Problems

While Deb finding out the truth about Dexter will be a great moment in the series, there’s still the whole issue of killing many people – especially for someone who, you know, puts those kind of people in jail.

Of course, the most intriguing thing about Dexter’s reveal may be the chance to revisit the case of one of Dexter’s best characters: Sergeant James Doakes.

There are other complications that will come in because, at the crime scene, Dexter’s blood slide gets found by Lieutenant LaGuerta because he loses it in the chaos that ensues and she immediately recognizes it’s his.

The only other time that she had seen this blood slide was in the copy case of the Bay Harbor Butcher. Her dear friend Sergeant Doakes, everyone thought he was the Bay Harbor Butcher, and thought that when he died, the Bay Harbor Butcher died with him. Now, she begins to suspect, “Is the Bay Harbor Butcher still alive and how can I set about proving the innocence of my friend Sergeant Doakes?” That is something that’s a silent thing at the start, but it’s, again, going to be eventually working its way back to Dexter. It’s going to be very interesting to see if she can exonerate him.

Brotherly Love

Some people may not think that Dexter is a charming guy, but Deb obviously feels differently. Even though many people questioned the Deb/Dexter romantic storyline, it’ll be interesting to see how this new revelation will impact her feelings towards her brother. While a potential romantic interlude is what many people are focusing on, it should be the internal struggle of Deb dealing with her feelings (through numerous swear words) that’s most intriguing:

Obviously this whole season we’re going to have great fun playing with every permutation that can be played between Debra and Dexter in their relationship now that this information has come out. She was on her way to the church at the end of the last season because she had come to realize that she not only loved her foster brother Dexter but she is in love with him.

…obviously what she learns is going to affect [her feelings for Dexter], so all of the things that have been the bedrock of Deb’s life get moved around. That’s part of what we hope will be fascinating for our fans, is to watch and see how we play out all of those various interpretations.

The Guest Stars (& Possible Big Bads)

When guest stars join Dexter for the season, you know that they’re either going to be a love interest or a big bad. In this case, maybe both?  Well, for one of them anyway.

Ray Stevenson’s character, Isaac, comes to Miami when his very close personal lieutenant is accused of killing a Miami cop and then suddenly disappears. So Isaac wants to find out what happened to his friend and how he disappeared. The fact that it was a cop will bring them all around the Miami Metro police system. That is going to be a long story arc.

Also, we have Yvonne Strahovski. She is fantastic. She plays this woman named Hannah, who took off from this small rinky-dink Florida town and ran off with this older guy and they went on this wild killing spree. So when they got caught, she turned state’s evidence on the boyfriend, he went to jail for life and she started a new life. Years later, she’s in her 30s and she will intersect with Dexter. I would say Hannah is a still water that runs very deep and is quite unlike any woman Dexter has ever known.

There’s nothing needy about Hannah. Every woman that Dexter’s ever come to either the rescue of or been involved with have been incredibly needy.

Hannah has a cool aloofness, but there’s something about her that will intrigue him.

  1. I’m not usually one to cry out about spoilers but do you have to put “Deb’s Reaction” in the title of the article which also shows up in RSS feeds. I haven’t seen last season but i’ll take a wild guess as to what that means…

Anyway, keep up the good work SR (I mean that seriously).

    • The only reason why you know what the title means is because you know what’s happened. That could literally mean anything. If it were a different season, it could be about Dexter talking to Rita, Deba and Frank Lundy….

      • Eh, if it were any of those other things your lead would likely not be “Deb’s reaction” because it wouldn’t be a big deal. One can infer that since it’s in the headline it is a big deal and therefore means Deb found out about Dexter. I actually didn’t know what happened until I read your headline, and, I suppose, I still don’t “know” for certain what happened not having seen the last season.

That’s all I’ll say about it. I’m a big fan of the site and know how seriously you usually take your spoilers and only commented (complained?) because I thought you might want to change it before it spoiled it for someone else as well.

        • It’s a fine line with these things sometimes.

          • It is, indeed. In any case, it’s certainly no Rosebud.

  2. lets hope this season can get close to the greatness that was season 4 .. i was not a fan of last season at all .. but i am interested to see where things go with the creepy intern computer game guy.

  3. Wow!
I know exact details aren’t given but based off these answers you can map out pretty easily how certain things will happen.
Usually I try to avoid spoilers but Dexter has kind of dropped off IMO so other than reading what will happen at the very end I don’t mind reading anything else.

    • It was around season 6 that I contacted the writers of Dexter to tell them the truth that Dexetr never had a dark passenger.

Of course gave them the run down full history of Dexter in real life and thus the reason they removed his dark passenger since my memories have risen to the surface to see the light of day as it were.

  4. I’m looking forward to seeing Yvonne Strahovski take on a darker role.

  5. I am surprised to see that people are surprised. While the series has changed a lot of story lines from the book series.Deb finding out has happened in the books.Maybe there will be differences in how she will take it all in.But in the books she is past it.

About the spoiler thing.Dexter lost it’s edge right after the second season. It became less and less thrilling and very predictable.I still enjoyed Dexter as a dark comedy. But it never reached the high tension it did in the first two seasons. In the fifth season there were indications of Deb having difficulties with criminals not getting what they deserve. Which is why she let Lumen and Dexter go after they killed Jordan. Not knowing it was her brother.OK,I admit it is a huge step from the point in letting vigilantes go to one where she accepts her brother is a serial killer. But isn’t the whole show full of that craziness.

    • Could’t agree more with you !
The first 2 seasons were really great !
And then it started to go slowly downhill.
What really makes Dexter bad is how the writers are Dumbing him down..and how stupid he became from this once trained and careful Killer that he was.

Using his own car when out for a Kill !
Checking with his own ID into a Hotel where he is planning a Kill from…and so own. There are so many Stupid things he does…God…how come nobody catched him by now ?

Dexter was so smart and Professional before !
Just guess writers are lazy and can’t put them selfs into a Psychos mind !

      Sad !

  6. “He’s never had to deal with these kinds of emotions — regret, guilt, a sense of having let (someone) down”

Is the person, who said that, even familiar with dexter? brian moser? doakes? lila? miguel? and, most importantly/obviously, letting trinity live long enough to kill rita?

  7. Strictly speaking Dexter only felt real emotion when he became a father. And then I am not even sure if it can be called real emotion. But I agree there are many temporary moments where it seemed like he showed a whole range of emotions although in a very restricted manner and ones that never lasted. The actual conscience part is something that is developed in the sixth season and I think they want to elaborate on that. Personally I don’t like this development because that defies the whole essence of Dexter.Especially since in the book Dexter is a character that never had true feelings. He is very good in faking and simulating.

  8. The complete true information about the history of Dexter Morgan.

Truth be told the inception of Dexter Morgan was in name only back in 1997.

Dexter was named after a fanboy of Dexters Laboratory the cartoon show back in 1997. Jeff Lindsay as well as myself and others asked why the fanboy thought he should be named Dexter and he replied that my version of him was weird like that and then 30 minutes later he asked the fanboy for permission to use that name and it stuck.

While on the forum discussing the history of this serial killer of mine as I was fleshing him out to others they were really stabbing me for more and more information on him and why I kept him for so long without telling anyone about him and calling me selfish for not sharing him with other people. So they and Jeff kept asking why do I think my serial killer is deemed so worthy to have his own TV show.

I told them throught hollywood history that you have had good vs good and bad vs bad and good vs bad and all the inbetween but we never have had a Serial Killer VS Serial Killer tv or movie. Then someone butted in – Only kills other serial killers! Ha!! What is that some kind of code?

It was there the code was born.

So when was Dexter actually created and why?

Contrary to popular held belief that he was created durring a business lecture full of tired people was also spoken about in 1997 but the truth is that I created the serial killer that became known as Dexter was in 1973.

It was a very dramatic event in my life that caused to have PTSD and I do not wish that on any child that young who does not deserve such treatment.
There was a song that helped me/inspire me to create Dexter and it is sung by Clint Holmes – Playground of my mind. That song itself prevented me from committing suicide as it let me explore my own thoughts and ideas that I never knew was possible.

That pretty much sums up Dexter:

I created him to keep myself sane to protect children at any and all costs
