Dexter season 7 premiere Dexter Producers Wanted Series To End In Season 7; Will Now Be Season 8

Showtime’s Dark Passenger is making his way towards the exit, as Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton not only reveals that the series was originally supposed to end this year, but that it will “absolutely” end next year.

[DEXTER SEASON 6 SPOILERS FOLLOW]

Walking in on her brother killing Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks) in the Dexter season 6 finale, Deb’s revelation of Dexter’s true self was originally going to kick off the series’ final season this year. However, speaking with TV Guide, Colleton notes Showtime ultimately convinced them to wait until Dexter season 8 to end the series.

Though Showtime bosses hope otherwise, Colleton confirms that Dexter will definitely be ending next year:

We wanted to end it this year, but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years. In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender.

Highlighting her intent from the early stages of developing the series, Colleton knew that the twisted tale of Dexter Morgan would ultimately be a seven-year journey. Even though extending the final season arc across two years may not have be what was originally planned, Colleton believes that it is something that can “easily” be done.

From the very beginning, when I first started developing the pilot, I always knew it would be a seven-year arc for this series. I feel easily that we can be an eight-year show, but I never want it to get old and stale. I want us to go out on a high and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end. It’s always wise to know when it’s time to leave the stage before you’re asked to leave the stage.

Perhaps taking a page from Breaking Bad (or Showtime simply not wanting their hit series to end), Dexter’s now-extended final story will receive the same 24 episode (12 each season) treatment as most series on network television. For a series that thrives in having shortened season orders, one has to wonder what “easily” adding on another season means, or what that will translate to on the small screen.

Dexter producers Sara Colleton and John Goldwyn @ Comic-Con

Speaking with Colleton at Comic-Con in 2010, the Dexter producer told us that a 12-episode season allowed them to write a more succinct storyline, as a typical full-season network order often leads many series to supplement aspects of the seasonal story-arcs with filler storylines and episodes.

Though Dexter is still a 12-episode-per-season series, asking producers to delay the finale one year still results in the infamous “Well we could always do this…” discussion, which will certainly impact the intend telling of Dexter’s final story – though to what degree, positively or negatively, is still unknown.

Fortunately, having an end-date set does provide producers with time to plan story-arcs that appropriately span the entirety of the remaining episodes – and that’s exactly what they did.

Although producers are till unsure about what the final scene of Dexter will be, everything else has already been planned. With slight tweaks to their original arc, they know exactly where the story is headed, and how it’s going to end.

We have worked that out and know where it’s going to end.

We don’t know what the final scene is, but we know where it’s going. We know now exactly how it’s going to end and how the series will end.

Of course, one question that Colleton declined to ever answer was whether or not Dexter Morgan will die in the end.

So we’ll put the question to you:

  1. Even though Dex has issues I think his urge of killing did good to innocent people around him! He did save lives in a weird twisted way. I hope he doesn’t die :’( I’ll be disappointed ! </3

  2. “Dexter, Where will this end?

Where it always ends, tied down on a table.

  3. Told you

  4. I wish they would let dexter and Harrison get away to Argentina to be with Hannah but I know that wont happen

    • He should go away with Harrison and . Lumen

  5. Deb should do it, her one final act of protecting Dexter and Harrison

  6. I wish Dexter would go on indefinitely it is the best program ever

    • LOL I hope you’ve changed your mind in the last couple of months. They should have let this show go last season. Or at the very least, followed up on the aftermath of the LaGuerta murder. Instead, let’s do what we always do, throw a big bad in there, have a bunch of unrealistic close calls to tread water until the plot drastically changes and the last 2 or 3 episodes follow a course of action that has absolutely no connection to what came in the weeks before it.

  7. I don’t think dexter should end , I think his son needs to be a killer too :)

  8. This show jumped the shark in season 4. Its about time.

  9. I don’t want Dexter to end a lot of story lines left but since you are keep him alive with his son, best showtime original EVER I was hooked from the first episode!

  10. I think in the end they should make it seem like dexter is going to die but then he does that eyebrow thing like as if he can get out of it. And then its left up to us to decide if he really died or not

  11. I think in the end they should make it seem like dexter is going to die but then he does that eyebrow thing like as if he can get out of it. And then it’s left up to us to decide if he really died or not.

  12. I would like dexter to travel the United States finding people who murder, rape or moleste childern who have found a way to escape the rule of law and have him give them the justice they deserve. Maybe he could take out a whole city of drug addicts by releasing un-cut drugs in one night and then have the trash trucks pick up the bodies early in the am.

  13. I really don’t like even the slightest hint of Dexter being canceled…the show could go for a 10th season with no problems…Dexter should meet a nice girl move to the Rocky Mt and live happily ever after…until a serial killer arrives in his neck of the woods…The End :)

  14. I love dexter short and sweet please don’t end dexter

  15. Please dont end the best show ever made, there is no way this show could ever get to the point of being “asked to leave the stage”. If the show MUST end, do not kill dexter because this show will epically go from the greatest show ever dreamed to the worst of the worst endings of any story for a tv show, movie, book etc etc.. and i mean the worst, period

  16. I don’t think Dexter should end in 8.The show is very good always has been don’t ruin a good thing, there is a lot of life left. Madelane

  17. I love Dexter! I can’t believe they want to end this show! : ( noooooo

  18. I have watched all the seasons of decter in under a month…please do season 9 or else i womt know what to do! Please! Thanks

  19. They SHOULD have ended the show with Season 7. Season 8 is absolutely HORRIBLE. The beginning is interesting with the introduction of Vogel and a downward spiraling Debra, however the episodes following have been absolute trash. Now there’s only 3 more episodes to the finale and they JUST NOW revealed who the real brain surgeon is.

Not to mention, WHY in the HELL did they think it would be a good idea for Dexter to fall in love with Hannah Mckay? She’s an absolutely HORRIBLE character who should have been killed off a long time ago. If she doesn’t die in the last couple of episodes I will s*** my pants.

  20. Hurrah! I was so bummed that Dexter was over. I LOVE THIS SHOW! Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C Hall are the best!

    Thank you showtime!

    Debbie, Tijeras NM

  21. A few thoughts..1). Vogel should have been the brain surgeon!
2). As another viewer commented, Lumen was the best girl for Dexter. 3). Love Jennifer Carpenter! Hope she kills Hannah McKay before Hannah turns on Dexter one day. Love, love, love this show! Best acting crew ever!

  22. Agree with that comment! Vogel being behind the brain surgeon would be a great twist. Jennifer Carpenter is great to watch and would love to see her finish off Hannah McKay.

  23. This final season is completely embarrassing. I’ll need to go back and watch the John Lithgow season (the peak of the show in my opinion), to wash this horrible cheesy junk we’ve been handed the last few weeks.

  24. I think Dexter should have a series of beak downs personality shifts that will end in his death or be committed. I think it should be almost as twisted asthe old movie Sybil. I think he or one of his personality should also feel remorse which will be his down fall.

  25. the way they ended dexter it could heve been like mash go on for years and years.people would have watch it for ever.

  26. Dear Sara Colleton and John Goldwyn. I urge you two to please consider Dexter season 9. You can’t end a series like that where dexter fakes his death in order to continue killing, knowing that he’s incapable of a normal life. I admire your work and every season that you two have created. Please don’t end it like this, surprize us all with season 9, please.

  27. Dear producer , as most of us feel that the way Dexter ended was incomplete , we can guess that Dexter will start a new life , but will he continue killing…
What happens to his son Harris , will he ever find out about his father, there are so many what if…
    Please bring out season 9?

  28. I would absolutely LOOOOOOVE it if Dexter continued with more seasons!
