[Update: Be Sure To Check out our Dexter Season 5 Premiere Review!]

As we get closer to the highly anticipated Dexter season 5 premiere on September 26th, we’re getting more and more info to satisfy our Dexter craving – with new promos and new actors joining the cast.

We got our first real look at season 5 with the trailer that was shown at Comic-Con. The Comic-Con trailer was more of an extended promo – giving away numerous plot elements for this early stage (spoiler avoiders beware). However, this latest promo (which was shown on Showtime last night during Weeds and The Big C) is more of a teaser, holding a little bit more back – only hinting at what we can expect.

Many or our favorite supporting performers are scheduled to return: Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter’s sister, Debra), Lauren Valez (Lt. Laguerta), and David Zayas (Angel Batista).

However, the new faces we can look forward to seeing include Julia Stiles (The Bourne Ultimatum), Peter Weller (RoboCop), Johnny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) and Chris Vance (Prison Break) – the latter joining the cast earlier today.

With the exception of the use of “Lux Aeterna” which has been used a billion times in other trailers, the promo is unusual, visually striking and very memorable. Take a look:

[Dexter spoilers ahead!]

Season 5 sees Dexter even more lost and out of control than ever before. Not only does he have the emotional shock of Rita’s murder to get over – but now he’s being looked at with suspicious eyes for the first real time since season 2 when Sergeant Doakes (remember him?) was convinced Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Oh, and let’s not forget Dexter has three kids (one biological son as well as a step-son and daughter) to take care of – all the while trying to both satisfy and control his inherent need to kill people.

Dexter certainly has a lot on his plate to take care of, but as he says in the above promo – he’s a neat monster who’s always been good at picking up the pieces whenever there’s a mess in his life. Will Dexter live to kill another day? My gut instinct is to say yes – but at this point the show has yet to be renewed for a sixth season. Perhaps this will be Dexter’s last go-around… What do you think?

On a side but related note, the Emmys are close to rolling around again and Dexter is nominated for multiple awards including two of the biggest – Best Drama and Best Lead Actor for Michael C. Hall.

"Daddy kills people..."

Personally I’m rooting for Lost to win in both categories (Matthew Fox is nominated for Lead Actor) but part of me wants Hall to get it – as this is his third consecutive nomination and it’s a crying shame he’s yet to win one. Hall gives a wonderful performance as Dexter Morgan season after season. He makes a serial killer genuinely likable for crying out loud – what more do you need? icon razz New Life Shattering Dexter Season 5 Promo

  1. So excited for dexter, its not easy for a show to get better and better with each season. Sept 26 cant come soon enough :D

Ps. I prefer Lost as a show but Hall > Fox

  2. How could you hope for Mathew Fox to win best Actor over Micheal Hall? Ugh! Lost was a mess, didn’t make sense and was nothing compared to “Dexter”. Dexter should win both nominations. Probably won’t though, it’s like the MTV Movie awards, too many kids voting and Twilight always seems to win everything, even over great actors.

  3. Meh I really have been loving Dexter, but I have yet toe be impressed with Micheal C Hall’s acting. It’s not bad, but it really isn’t anything special I see much better acting on a weekly basis maybe even daily. However it’s much more deserving of both awards than Lost which is just a crap show. So as long as lost doesn’t win I’m fine with Dex winning.

  4. How can Lost win in Drama? If there was a Nonsense and Rubbish catergory then it would win hands down!

  5. Yeah, Lost was just stupid. I tried my hardest to get into it and I just thought it was retarded. Dexter had me by the short hairs from the first episode. It is by far one of the best shows on TV. It is sad that Showtime On-demand would suck if not for their own shows. I was looking for a movie the other day and they only had like 15-20 movies on there, yet Dexter and Weeds are enough to keep my subscription. I would like to watch some of the other shows but I can’t catch them from the first episode yet. Maybe they will put the rest On Demand so I can check them out too. I just recently watched Weeds and am a huge fan now.
I am also a Dark Tower Junkie. If any of you have ever read those books I think you might agree that those books need to be made into shows on either HBO or Showtime. Their are a lot of people that are wanting them made into movies but I really think that this would be a better format for telling that story. I don’t think they will transfer into movie form that well and be able to keep the audience. No doubt they will look good. Then again, Harry Potter looks awesome, too bad the story sucks balls. I think HBO has done a great job with True Blood… minus Anna Paquin. I have read all of those books and they have done a great job telling that story even if they have added lots of stuff. These would have sucked if they made movies out of it. Granted the acting would hopefully be better but they wouldn’t be able to tell the story.

  6. The 26th can’t come soon enough. This is my favorite show of all time hands down.

  7. I think Dexter and Micheal C Hall will win. Which they should anyway but for sure because of the terrible ending of Lost disqualified it in my book

  8. Heard from a source (who’s on the crew), that Season 5 is going to be the darkest yet!

Picked up my season 4 dvds today!!!

    Ps
    Never liked Lost.

  9. Rebooting gravatar,,,, 8-)

  10. Love the show Dexter. Can’t wait for the new season. But that was one of the STUPIDEST trailers I have ever seen!!!!!!!!

  11. What a great trailer , everything turn upside down
then picking pieces then cut on his own face??
wow I am impressed already !!!
as everyonw said “Lost is weak sauce”
“Cant wait till Dexter new season”

  12. Part of the charm of Dexter was the juxtaposition of the “dark” subject matter against the vibrant background of Miami. Now Dexter is getting to the point where it is so dark, it is just plain depressing and tough to watch. That last episode of season 4 might have ruined the show for me…

  13. I disagree. A show has to change it’s what makes great shows great. It has to stay true to the characters while slowly evolving. If dextar is going to stay great it has to get darker until it reaches a peak and gradually get light again coming full circle. I think season 4 was great and added an entirely new layer and level of depth to the show. Honetly this show gets better and better. I honestly started just a few weeks ago and couldn’t stop now I’m all caught up.

  14. I love Dexter and cannot wait for Sept 26th. However I am pissed about his wife. It was a great turn of events but damn! I will miss Rita and wonder what kind of effect this will have on our show.

  15. I agree I’ll miss Rita she was a very important part of the show and it’s sad to see her gone. It will be interesting to watch Dextar raise the kids by himself.

  16. Hey what’s up with the Dexter spoilers!!!!!

    Damn you!!!

  17. I can’t wait till the first episode of season 5 goes on torrents. We here in Sri Lanka doesn’t get this on tv cuz our people are too dumb to watch good tv. there’s crap all the time. So i download as soon as the US airing. Man I wish Michael C Hall wins the emmy along with Dexter. its a rocking series and i have watched all episodes so far and can’t have enough. Watched Six Feet Under and loved him there as well. He is such a dark character he doesn’t have to make an effort. i am sure he’s the same in real life, that’s why he can imitate it so vividly.

    Dexter rocks !!!!

Oh Lost !!! ……………… Please get lost !!!

  18. I expect we’ll see Rita in conversations with Dexter just as we see Harry.

    • Her contract is over..

  19. Julie Benz has signed up for at least a few episodes so I expect there to be some flashbacks, but the producers have said that she won’t be a ghost like Harry. I’m really excited for season five. Dexter is the best show on TV I have ever seen, and season 4 was amazing. I think the show should get darker though, I really hope they get to explore the dark passenger more thoroughly this season.
