With the season finale of Dexter only a few days away, you had to expect more promo info to come out. While the cast & crew of the show have taken drastic precautions (non-disclosure agreements, fake scripts) to keep what’s going to happen a secret, fans of the show can thank Showtime for not following suit and releasing a bevy of spoiler-worthy clips.

Not to be outdone, executive producer Clyde Phillips continues to make his rounds with Dexter news and should receive the award for being able to say so much, without actually revealing anything. Although, I have a feeling after we see the finale, there will be some clues in what he said that we just didn’t catch. My thought is that his promise that this finale episode “will blow the top of your head off” has some meaning as it’s not a usual phrase to use.

Phillips on whether or not things will be wrapped up or continue into the next season:

“I can’t say whether or not things get tied up because then the audience has an expectation of whether or not things are going to get tied up.”

See what I mean? He knows he has the biggest secret in the world and he sure is milking it. Still, there are other members of the cast that are a little more revealing (yet not) about the season finale.

Courtney Ford (Christine – Trinity’s daughter) says:

“The finale definitely has a huge twist.”

“It is a game-changer if you’re a Dexter fan. Fans are going to freak out. We freaked out when we were finally made aware of what was going to happen. They kept us in the dark about what was going to happen until the last possible moment. Initially, they even gave us a script that wasn’t the real finale script. I read it and I was like, ‘This is a little weird, but, okay, they know what they’re doing.’ And then I realized everyone else was kind of thinking that as well. Then it came time to film it and they said they had changes and we were given a few pages every day… only the ones we needed that day, so it kept us in suspense. It is a terrifying way to work because you don’t know where your character is headed.”

Hmm… Isn’t she supposed to be dead? If she’s dead then why would she be a part of the finale? Does that mean that she’s not dead or that there’s a possibility of her returning a la Harry in some memory, flashback or sub-conscious form? I can’ wait to find out!

New Clips

In the Dexter finale preview we got see Deb confront Dexter regarding his past, but in this video Deb finds out so much more. There’s also some family time with Trinity AND the conclusion of the Trinity/Dexter showdown from last weeks episode.

(Not so) Happy time at the Trinity house

Showdown

Everything comes together for Deb [minor spoilers]

Those videos are great and have me even more excited about the season finale, but the thing that has me more excited than that, is the fact that Showtime is even releasing these videos. These aren’t just a little ambiguous clips – this is the second video that just straight up drops a major plot reveal. Still, the fact that Showtime is releasing these has me thinking that this is nothing compared to what else is going to happen. If Deb finding out Dexter’s past is just an appetizer, what’s the main course?

Theories

[Minor Spoilers Below]

With the Dexter finale preview came a slew of theories in the comments about what’s to come in the finale. While there are very few people that actually know what’s going to happen, Phillips had debunked some things during the horribly-hosted live chat.

  • Trinity is not Dexter’s father.
  • Neither Deb nor Rita are going to become victims of Trinity.
  • Deb will not find out Dexter’s “big” secret. (While Deb finds out Dexter’s secret in the book, most of the producers haven’t read past the first book and while they find such a reveal an interesting aspect, they have yet to consider it for the show.)

Now, on to some of the more far-fetched theories:

  • This season is not, in fact, a dream that Dexter has been having after the car accident. He’s not going to wake up handcuffed to a hospital bed after the police found him with the body of Benny Gomez.
  • Trinity is not a manifestation of Dexter having multiple personalities.

There you have it. Enough Dexter information to hold you over ‘til Sunday. Still, if you need something to supplement your Dexter-fix, you can always check out Dexter: Early Cuts.

What do you think? Am I missing anything? Are your theories now debunked? Any thoughts of the video?

People say that they come here for the articles, but we all know it’s for the comments. So, do your part and comment below.

Catch the season finale of Dexter next Sunday @9pm on Showtime.

  1. Cyn – that makes sense, and to be honest a part of me really felt that it would be Rita (if anybody) until I read the article above that said neither Deb nor Rita would be victims.

I just really felt that Dexter having a family was limiting what the writers could do with the character, and like some other actors on the show said “now they can start from a clean slate and go anywhere”. Still, the way they did it was sad.

  2. @Jonathon – yes, it was sad.

Rita was really grating on my nerves lately, so I felt that I wouldn’t care if she were gone, but it bothers me more today (for Dexter) than it did at the time it happened. Kind of like it needed to sink in, I guess. Plus, I’d sort of been expecting it so it certainly wasn’t a huge shock.

But still – next season is bound to be interesting! I hope they don’t ruin it. I didn’t think it could get any better than Season 1 – but Season 4 proved me wrong.

  3. Honestly, I’d stopped watching Dexter halfway through the season because I hated Rita so intensely. It seemed like every episode revolved around her being unpleasant. I finally fired up the Tivo and caught up with the season in time for the finale, and as much as I love Julie Benz, I was glad to see Rita go. I don’t think I could have handled another season of “Dexter the Hen-Pecked Serial Killer”.

  4. Food for thought:
a.)Deb typically doesn’t miss a thing. She may have been a bit distracted with how to tell Dexter that he is actually the brother of the Ice Truck Killer, But She is still trying to figure out how/why Dex was at Trinity’s house so fast.
b.)Wouldn’t Trinity’s family say something about Dex being AT the house just before the raid?
3.)Angel had a VERY good look at Dex & Trinity having a “Conversation” right next to his desk. He’s a detective, he’ll figure “Something” out.
d.)Harrison’s “Born in Blood” is more of a paper cut compared to Dexter’s “Born in Blood”. Dex was old enough to actually be able to eventually remember… Harrison (Harry’s son)… not so much… plus, what COULD he have seen? His mother, naked & crying, getting into a bathtub (he’s seen all of this before). Then a naked old man gets in the tub with her, talks into her ear while looking into a mirror, she falls “asleep”… he leaves. There were no limbs flying to traumatize him.
e.)The Trinity panel van is still in the parking garage, next to the bank. Banks have lots and lots of external camera’s. Dexter will be seen on footage at the same time Trinity arrives and again when Rita drops him off after bailing him out of jail for a tussle with the police at THE garage.
6.)This may be trivial… but did anybody notice if there was a smudge (sister ash) on the wall where Rita was? Was she pointing?

I’m sure I’ll think of more but this is enough for now…

I do have one observation about alot of the posters. it seams that quite a few of you have forgotten that Dexter is Broken. He has no emotions… Sure, He’s learned to “Display” a reasonably good facsimile of an appropriate emotion as needed. I don’t think he “NEEDS” anybody. Rita’s death “Shouldn’t” affect him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he disposes of her in the Gulf Stream, cleans up the mess and cruises out to the keys to plant her luggage and the like in their hotel room. Then plays dumb when he can’t find her there… Oh… Wait… She never made the flight to begin with… nevermind…

  5. @Talonzz – Dexter’s not as broken, monster-ish, or heartless as he kept claiming. His internal struggles have shown that.

@Maven – LOL, I hear ya! She was really grating sorely on the nerves almost this entire season.

  6. and P.S, is Deb ever gonna get off Dexter’s back? It seems like every single episode she is mad at Dexter, yelling at him for something so little. Its kinda getting annoying. Just like everyone was getting annoyed with Rita. Are we gonna kill Deb off too? why not kill the whole cast if thats the case?

  7. What a sad death for Rita. I’m pretty sure that Dexter was upset by it. He’d been learning to be if not happy, content. If Trinity didn’t kill her, who the heck did?

I like how they’ve been using Dexter’s father in daydream sequences. It’s very interesting. Even though you know is his subconscious telling him what he thinks his dad would have said, the back and forth between the two has been really interesting.

I would like it if they did that with Rita. Bring her back the way Dexter thinks she would be. I think that his best shot at a relationship would be with dead Rita. Obviously live people aren’t a good idea.

I don’t know how he’s going to be a father to three kids and still go out killing in the middle of the night without getting a baby sitter. That would track his comings and goings more than Rita ever did.

I love the books and the third one’s great. It would make a really great season on the show. I don’t hold out much hope for the producers trying that much less reading the book. Especially since Cody and Aster are actually little psychotics in training not just victims of a drug addicted father.

My understanding is that Dexter is Deb’s half-brother. I thought that Dexter was the product of the affair he was having with Dexter’s mother but I could be wrong. I felt that was another reason why he took Dexter and left the brother. It’s not like he could tell from looking at him that he would be a maniac. Not to mention the fact that he took Dexter right from the crime scene without any idea of how he would turn out either. That also makes me think that Dexter is Debs half-brother. Deb should be wondering about that herself.

I didn’t like that the father was cheating on the mother all the time. That just seemed wrong.

Advice to Julie Benz: Next time the writer’s make you pregnant by a serial killer, just say no. You didn’t survive having a baby with Angel and now Dexter. She staked herself on Angel and had her throat cut on Dexter. It’s starting to look like a trend. ;)

I want Rita back though. Dream Rita could be the perfect woman for him.

Phillips says before the final episode that neither deb nor rita gets hurt by trinity…and after the finale he says that rita is definitely dead and was killed by trinity…. this means you cant count on what philips says. OR the writers themselves never know what will hppen in the next episode..

my personal opinion is that showtime will wait for the reactions of the fans and THEN will decide what happened and what will happen in season 5…probably they will surf the internet for theories fans have made up and will decide for one of the most interessting sounding theory…

    what do you think ?

phillips can say whatever he wants now i wont believe him…

  9. @Sevan – I think the writer who posted those comments by Philips has indicated that he misinterpreted.

  10. Dexter can't be Debs half brother. In season 1 we saw him inheriting a house from his real father, and he did a blood test to proove they were related. There was also a flash back that implied Harry had to get blood from the real father when Dexter was injured in hospital.
