What to know what happens next? ‘Dexter’ Season 7 Details Revealed

Despite some ups and downs, Showtime’s Dexter continues to be a ratings hit and critical darling for the subscription network. While certain aspects of the fan-favorite series are less cohesive, and subsequently less entertaining, than others – there’s no doubt the trials, tribulations, and murders of Miami Metro’s “blood guy” continue to captivate audiences.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that Dexter has been renewed for at least two more season arcs – meaning fans will get to enjoy another 24 episodes of watching Michael C. Hall explore the battle between his onscreen counterpart’s growing humanity and ever-present Dark Passenger.

Dexter season 7, alone, was reported to be in jeopardy a little over a month ago – as Hall and his representatives were pushing for $1 million per Dexter episode ($24 million total for two seasons) and Showtime wasn’t interested in going above a combined $20 million total. As we previously reported, even the $20 million figure would make Hall one of the most highly-paid actors on television.

However, while the Showtime press release doesn’t (of course) address the actor’s compensation, Hall and the network have worked out a deal – as Dexter has been renewed for two more seasons. According to Showtime president of entertainment, David Nevins:

“The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape. Together with Michael, the creative team on the show has a very clear sense of where they intend to take the show over the next two seasons and, as a huge fan, I’m excited to watch the story of Dexter Morgan play out.”

Deadline caught-up with Nevins following the announcement, who clarified that the network’s negotiations with Hall weren’t nearly as difficult as we might have been led to believe – adding that the team has a plan for a three-year arc (which includes the current season):

“It’s been a pretty simple negotiation, and Michael C. Hall has been incredibly gentlemanly throughout the whole process. The biggest question was: what is the trajectory of the show creatively? And after speaking with (executive producers) John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Scott Buck, it became pretty clear that there was a very clear 3-year trajectory. Once we established that, this became a very simple negotiation, which went down pretty quickly.”

While this season of Dexter hasn’t been the series’ strongest narrative showing, there’s no doubt that with a few “kill of the week” episodes, a number of especially bizarre serial murders, and Hall’s compelling performance as the titular character, season six has (so far) offered a strong continuation of the over-arching storyline.

Despite the “3-year trajectory,” Nevins also asserts that, while it’s a possibility, season eight isn’t guaranteed to be the series’ endpoint:

“I’m not going to say with absolute certainty that this is the end, but that is the likely scenario, that the series is moving towards a definite end.”

However, with Dexter becoming increasingly “Human” – not to mention Deborah’s near-miss discovery of her brother’s killer instinct last season – it’ll be especially interesting to see how the show runners keep things moving in the series or, should season eight be the last installment, how they intend to wrap-up Dexter’s story.

Can there be a happy ending for dearly devoted Dexter Morgan?

  1. This is the obvious order of best seasons:

    Come on yall get real.

    • No frekin way.

      1,4,2,3,5,6. Thats the order.

    • best seasons in order: 1-2-3-4-5-6… 7?

    • Love Dexter …can’t wait for season 7 yet if indeed season 8 will be it For us & Dexter & His dark passenger has left …he wants good he’s learning love & after rita …Bring back lunna she will be a perfect ending season 8 with her truthful i like her for a partner better then rita …There perfect for each other!!! She knows him …inside out!!! Season 8 Dexter storyline if it’s The last & ending WITH The girl he saved & helped track down her killers!!!

      • her name was luman and she left because she couldnt deal w/ dexters need to kill. she most likley married the man who she was engaged to and has a family. dexter never looks back he moves forward.

  2. wen begins the series 7? can someone tell me?pls…

    • September 30, 2012 is when Dexter comes back.

  3. We are waiting dexte ……..

  4. if i where dex would keep ther serial killers trophys, like the tooth fiary’s teeth and the ddk sword, shame what he did with them

    • Wait, what?
      This is your logic.

Killing people – “Cool. You’re a good guy, you know that? Keep Doing what you’re doing”

      . ori
      . ti
      . e
      . s

See how that’s not straight up there? Yeah, straighten that up.

    • No way. Deb gives f**king class to us foul mouthed f**ks :)

  6. Its kinda of disappointing to see the show end in the next couple of seasons. I was looking foward to see the show end on season 10. Just for the fact of having it for a decade in the air..I’m gonna miss this show so bad!!

  7. Season 6 was definitely the weakest so far.
Apart from season 1 which follows the book and is absolute masterpiece others were pretty damn awesome too.
But 6 had unconvincing villain, somewhat tedious and slow story arc, and that crap abut Deb realizing her big sexual attraction/love for Dex. They had such great dynamic as bro and sis it’s a shame it’s destroyed.

But maybe 7 will fix it :)

    • I agree 100% w/ what u wrote, the writers are going in an odd direction, but maybe not, because of sisters like debra that’s why serial killers exist.

  8. I love watching Dexter. Because I watch him on tv I would like him to come to my boat.
    From Nikki

    • shut dexter needs to come to my streets and realy take care of all the robberies ,shootings.its a nightmare here.realy not kidding.
i realy like dexter he’s a good guy and a hottie.

  9. How happy to have Ol’ Dex back again!!! It’s fantastic!
However, some die hard fans are growing aware and weary of the eight year plans. Rethinking the buying of any show seasons when Dexter ends.
It’s not like the days of Gunsmoke.

  10. dexter should be in all of us ,i know he’s in me ,the truthfulness and the dark side ,wich Embraces me in every dark matter .not eveyone is king ,but only those who show to have the glory .Dexter is a ‘show’ good one
but reality is among us .

  11. Dexter is awesome, I absolutely love this show. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in season 7. The season premiere was fantastic!

    Best Seasons:

  12. With Dexter and Debras’ love and devotional bond already established-it is completely and utterly unbelievable and so fake and ridiculous to accept the fact that they could be together.

    • debra is the reason dexter kills, harry morgan may have provided him the ammo to be an efficient killer , but debra is the trigger. she dominates him and now wants to do him, which will come into comflict w/ his moral compass (sociopath) that will push him over the edge!

  13. the lack of psychoanalysis of the character of dexter is the reason the series is in danger of being cancelled season 8 may be the last season if they do not give a more profound reason why dexter is a killer. the family interaction (morgans dysfunctional family values) and the traggic experience of dexters mothers death are a key factor as to why he is a sociopath, but not a killer, harry morgans abuse of dexter and debra morgan domination of dexter would explain his killer instinct, but the writers need to address the whole story, in order for dexter to actually evolved to a fitting father for his son harrison. and to keep viewers and series sponsers interested.

    • Later for all that; KILL DEXTER KILL!

  14. I think we can all agree that season 6 sucked. Collin hanks was not a good match for the job.

    • I agree season six wasn’t as awesome as the others, but it was still great. I freaking love every episode of every season! I have yet to see a show that I didn’t like. I’ve seen every episode two, & in some cases three times, plus I read the book.
I’m a true Dexter fan who is dreading the series finale in season 8. I would never say an episode, let alone a season sucked of this awesome show. My family & friends are in complete agreement on that. They all liked season six as well.

  15. OMGOSH JUST STARTED TO WATCH. AWESOME!!!!! Had to go out and buy seasons 1-5. Never did I think I would be cheering for a serial killer. Look forword to every sun night.

  16. I haven’t seen this show but this certainly seems appealing:-) Why does Mr. Hall feel entitled to such money? This might be an example of a jibroni that doesn’t have a clue with how to deal with great amounts of money- hire a lawyer, accountant, and psychologist sir!

  17. I haven’t seen this show but this certainly seems appealing:-) Why does Mr. Hall feel entitled to such money? This might be an example of a non-winner that doesn’t have a clue with how to deal with great amounts of money- hire a lawyer, accountant, and psychologist sir!

  18. Series 8 will be the last unfortunately :( Have watched from the beginning, love this show.
I wonder if season 8 will have 16 episodes, which will make the Finale the 100th episode?

  19. The finale better not be like the sopranos finale. Seasons 2 was one of my favorites. It kept me on my toes! Make it good. Great show!

  20. I’have been addicted to Dexter forever, Loooooooove the show and can’t wait for season 8. I hope we have Dexter for a long time to come, One can’t never get tired of watching him kill bad guys, I wish he could have stayed with Hannah and lived together happily ever after though ;(

  21. Dexter is so exciting. I hope there is a season 8 to watch. Hope he sticks to the code and gets away.I hope he gets back with Hanna.

  22. is this the end.,hopping for season 8.

  23. i think dexter and deb should end up together, now that deb has shot the captain, how sexy would it be if deb and dexter did the wild thing together, i think deb should be the one to get hannah, and i think there should be season 8 9 10 11 keep it going its just unreal, i love it dexter is also a hotte,

    • Hands off sister he’s mine lol

  24. I love DEXTER MORGAN!!! I used to think it would be SICK for Deb and Dex to get together but after that season finale I have to agree with Kara, it would be freaking HOT now, hehehe. Please end it off well for the final final series finale in season 8 so we can smile for a few months after. I love it when series end and leaves me thinking and smiling. LOVE YOU DEXTER!!!

  25. Going to watch the season 7 finale right now!

  26. Please say it ain’t so! I can’t imagine a Sunday night without Dexter. Give him {Micheal C. Hall} his asking price…unworhty actors get it so why not the Dex? I love, love, love him.

  27. If anyone can tell me how to get a Dexter figure holding a syringe I would be truly grateful. I have the other three and the syringe holding Dexter would complete my collection. Thanks Dexter fans….

  28. Dexter lost its mojo as screenwriters were swithched. Some had ideas that where from the original but led to be part of their imaginations. Then each had to adapt to the previous screnwriter, then try to go somewhere else with it. Thats why it started becoming more and more predictable as the saturation of cliche screenwriters jumped and swithched from its originality. I could call out what was going to happen before it did. Why? Because it wasn’t an original screenplay anymore. Would you agree?

  29. Showtime must be making a fortune from each season so I think they should go for season 9. Having watched seasons 1 to 7 over a 2 month period I know there are lots of people that still haven’t found the Dexter phenomenon.
