What to know what happens next? ‘Dexter’ Season 7 Details Revealed
Despite some ups and downs, Showtime’s Dexter continues to be a ratings hit and critical darling for the subscription network. While certain aspects of the fan-favorite series are less cohesive, and subsequently less entertaining, than others – there’s no doubt the trials, tribulations, and murders of Miami Metro’s “blood guy” continue to captivate audiences.
As a result, it should come as no surprise that Dexter has been renewed for at least two more season arcs – meaning fans will get to enjoy another 24 episodes of watching Michael C. Hall explore the battle between his onscreen counterpart’s growing humanity and ever-present Dark Passenger.
Dexter season 7, alone, was reported to be in jeopardy a little over a month ago – as Hall and his representatives were pushing for $1 million per Dexter episode ($24 million total for two seasons) and Showtime wasn’t interested in going above a combined $20 million total. As we previously reported, even the $20 million figure would make Hall one of the most highly-paid actors on television.
However, while the Showtime press release doesn’t (of course) address the actor’s compensation, Hall and the network have worked out a deal – as Dexter has been renewed for two more seasons. According to Showtime president of entertainment, David Nevins:
“The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape. Together with Michael, the creative team on the show has a very clear sense of where they intend to take the show over the next two seasons and, as a huge fan, I’m excited to watch the story of Dexter Morgan play out.”
Deadline caught-up with Nevins following the announcement, who clarified that the network’s negotiations with Hall weren’t nearly as difficult as we might have been led to believe – adding that the team has a plan for a three-year arc (which includes the current season):
“It’s been a pretty simple negotiation, and Michael C. Hall has been incredibly gentlemanly throughout the whole process. The biggest question was: what is the trajectory of the show creatively? And after speaking with (executive producers) John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Scott Buck, it became pretty clear that there was a very clear 3-year trajectory. Once we established that, this became a very simple negotiation, which went down pretty quickly.”
While this season of Dexter hasn’t been the series’ strongest narrative showing, there’s no doubt that with a few “kill of the week“ episodes, a number of especially bizarre serial murders, and Hall’s compelling performance as the titular character, season six has (so far) offered a strong continuation of the over-arching storyline.
Despite the “3-year trajectory,” Nevins also asserts that, while it’s a possibility, season eight isn’t guaranteed to be the series’ endpoint:
“I’m not going to say with absolute certainty that this is the end, but that is the likely scenario, that the series is moving towards a definite end.”
However, with Dexter becoming increasingly “Human” – not to mention Deborah’s near-miss discovery of her brother’s killer instinct last season – it’ll be especially interesting to see how the show runners keep things moving in the series or, should season eight be the last installment, how they intend to wrap-up Dexter’s story.
Can there be a happy ending for dearly devoted Dexter Morgan?

I definitely agree…this season was boring because of that…even the last episode…I was elated when Marshall was shown on Dex’s table of wrath…
That’s not true…detxer killed at least three people this season…

The tooth fairy episode was a joke. He just magically ended up at the right retirement home and found the guy. What happened to all the researching and stalking of his victims like in seasons past??

Yeah, I agree with REB. I don!t know what season u were watching, but this season was great. There was something new in the killing and in my opinion it was fantastick. He killed at least six people in this season and none kill got boring or usual at all! I loved that…..

I agree with Jeni!!! I can not express how much I identify with and admire Dexter! I just watched the season 6 finale and I am actually feeling anxious. Season 7 can’t start soon enough for me!!! If Dexter has to kill Deberah, so be it. I like Deberah, but given a choice between her and Dexter…Dexter wins, hands down!

I would like if debra and dexter collaborate. When there is no way of busting the bad guys she helps him. And want them to fall in love. So sad it ended for now…on the final scene i sad fuuuck:) she will be so hot as leutenant/killer

Dexter is the best show I am ever come across. I just started watching it this year at the request of my brother and man am U ever glad I did. I watched all 6 season in just over a month I am so addicted to it and I cant imagine it being cancelled, so much more to happen with the morgan family!!
I’m sure she will come to understand what he is doing. i can’t wait to see her face when she finds out her dad knew about it the whole time.
I know Deb wont do a damn thing about what she found out. Throughout the entire series shes talked about how she wishes she could be more like Dexter, or how he’s the superior Morgan. Think about all the times Dexter has saved her, or helped her out. Not to mention she’s in love with him. I am disappointed that they didn’t show the awkward conversation where you find out your brother is a serial killer.
Maybe Dex will bring her in? and what about that intern…oooh the suspense…
I am also freaking out knowing how long I have to wait to see how this plays out.

I would happily chip in if he wants more cash, just so we get another two seasons! He is brilliant, priceless timing,delivery, facial expressions – the works! His lines obviously not his doing so credit goes to the writers there, but just all round top bloke!

i seriously can’t believe they ended it that way, but showtime confirmed that dexter is coming back for 2 more seasons and that should be enough time to wrap it up. Deb will side with dexter if anything. After all this time, the image debra pictures her older brother to be of a nerdy older brother has been completely warped into a outlaw who kills crazies, pretty sure shes gonna get even more wet for dex.My brother just killed the doomsdaykiller, and hes probably killed all the cereal killers now that i think about it lol. This season was obviously about getting to a point in the story for season 7, which will be amazing!
Dont forget the Dorsey dude in the hazmat suit on the boat who he thought was travis.
Obviously, you’ve missed 4 kills!
The 2 paramedics, in the first episode (right at the beginning).
Then comes the dude that helped out DDK (with his wife).
He also killed her by pushing her into another room with the wormwood-gas.
So when you add this 4 kills to your total, that gives us 11 kills.
Make sure you get it right, before you start downtalking to other people.

The Music could have been good. Previous season music were really nice.
Deb finds out in the books after the first book based off of season 1 so I figured Deb would find out sooner or later. This was a good season. Can’t wait till season 7 starts.
I really enjoy the religion theme of season 6. I like the way the show mixes mordbid brutality with philosphic depth, it is truly unique.

I Loved the season, minus the weird therapist convincing Deb she was in love with her brother… thats just weird and off the beaten path of what the show is about. Def a nail bitter the whole way through this season! Cant wait for season 7! Keep em coming

I think Deb having “in love” feelings for Dexter is supporting her acceptance of Dexter being a serial killer for the Season 7 Premiere. I also think there will be a possibility of a make out or sex scene between Deb/Dex. Deb finally relaxes her life and Dex opens up and acts completely “human”. Anything to spike the Season ratings so it turns awesome again
