Dexter: Origins will finally tie together Dexter’s flashbacks into a full timeline to round out Dexter Morgan’s story, hopefully answering questions that Dexter and Dexter: New Blood never seemed to address. Dexter: Origins will follow Dexter as he graduates from college and begins working for Miami Metro. The Dexter prequel will fill in the blanks and bridge the gap between Dexter learning Harry’s Code and becoming a full-blown serial killer.

Flashbacks are an important part of Dexter, but frequently leave unanswered questions about Dexter and the Morgan family. Though flashbacks should still be a focal point in Dexter: Origins, there’s an opportunity to expand Dexter’s story and give greater detail into aspects of his childhood and early killing years.

6 How Does Dexter Start In Forensics?

Michael C. Hall looking serious as Dexter

Dexter never explains how he started in forensics and if Harry encouraged it prior to his death. Doakes discovers that Dexter graduated at the top of his class in medical school in Dexter season 2. However, it’s unknown if Dexter had always wanted to become a blood splatter analyst or if the career came about with Harry’s encouragement to help control his urges.

While being a blood splatter analyst is perfect for Dexter and his dark urges, Dexter never explains if that was his goal all along. It’s entirely possible that Harry and Dr. Vogel chose Dexter’s career for him to go along with the rules of Harry’s Code. Working for Miami Metro is a calculated plan for Dexter to gain access to confidential files and deserving criminals especially once Harry died.

5 Who Is Dexter’s First Kill With Miami Metro?

Doakes stares at Dexter

Dexter was young when he started killing, but his first kill with Miami Metro is currently unknown. Since Harry is already dead prior to Dexter starting work as a blood splatter analyst, it’s unclear if his first kill gave him trouble, how he decides to drop the bodies in the harbor, and the small details that create the Dexter that’s introduced in Dexter season 1. Since Dexter has worked for Miami Metro for 12 years at the start of Dexter, he is already an established serial killer.

Audiences do not know who Dexter is when he graduates from killing animals to killing humans. Dexter: Origins can answer if it took Dexter a few victims to become comfortable killing and disposing of evidence. Harry killed himself after finding Dexter dismembering a victim, so he was not there to guide Dexter through the ins and outs of covering his tracks.

4 Did Dexter’s Adoptive Mother Know About His Dark Urges?

Harry stands next to Dexter

Doris is Dexter’s adoptive mother, but he never addresses if she knew about his dark urges prior to her death from cancer. In Dexter season 2 episode “See-Through,” a flashback shows Doris telling Harry that something is off about a young Dexter and urges Harry to take him to a psychiatrist. Though Harry tells Dexter to lie to the psychiatrist, the flashback shows how Doris was just as much in tune with Dexter’s behavior as Harry.

Whether Doris officially knew from Harry about Dexter’s dark urges or just always suspected and worried about his behavior and personality, she obviously sensed something was not right. Doris and Harry were married for years, and it's possible she had a similar suspicion of Dexter's future. Dexter: Origins will take place years after her death, but flashbacks can answer just how involved Doris was in Dexter’s upbringing and Harry’s Code, if at all.

3 Did Harry Keep Track Of Brian?

Harry adopts Dexter after finding him at his mother’s crime scene, but Dexter never reveals if Harry kept track of Dexter’s brother, Brian. After the Ice Truck Killer reveal, Brian explains how Harry knew he was a messed-up kid and chose to only adopt Dexter. Brian spent his childhood in a mental facility until he was released at 21 years old.

Since Harry was concerned about Dexter’s dark urges growing up, it would be odd if he never checked on Brian’s state of mind as it would likely give him insight into Dexter. Brian and Dexter were close in age, so Harry was likely still alive when Brian was released. Dexter: Origins needs to answer if Harry knew Brian was released and if he was tracking him to keep Dexter safe prior to his death.

2 Was Harry A Dirty Cop?

James Remar as Harry Morgan on Dexter

Considering Dexter discovers Harry’s affair with a police informant, Dexter: Origins can answer if Harry is actually a dirty cop. Throughout Dexter, it appears that Harry is an upstanding man who has the respect of Miami Metro. However, Harry’s affair with Dexter’s biological mother, Laura, changes that perception and Deb’s discovery of multiple affairs with informants does not make Harry appear to be so upstanding.

Dexter: Origins may set up a major Harry retcon concerning his death which could very well include Harry’s numerous extramarital affairs. If Harry was hiding so many affairs while married to Doris, he could easily have other secrets. Dexter: Origins could answer if Harry is truly a dirty cop or just a dirty husband, revealing his secrets to the audience since Dexter and Deb will find out years later.

1 What Trophy Did Dexter Take Before Slides?

Dexter looking at his Blood Slides

Though Dexter has killed plenty of people, it is unclear if he took trophies prior to beginning the blood slide box. In Dexter season 8 episode “Every Silver Lining…” a young Dexter takes his first trophy from a crime scene that he visits with Harry: a small piece of glass with blood on it. However, when Dexter is reminiscing about his kills in Dexter season 2, the first blood slide in the box belongs to a Marine sniper named Alex.

If Dexter did not begin using blood slides until well into his career at Miami Metro, Dexter: Origins can answer what trophies he took from his early victims and if he took a trophy at all. When young Dexter took the glass from the crime scene, it was just the start of Harry and Dr. Vogel understanding who Dexter truly is and what it means for his future. It seems unlikely that he stopped using trophies until he became an established killer in Dexter.
