M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender may very well be the worst movie of his career, but that doesn’t mean the guy can’t still come up with an interesting original story.

Take Universal’s Devil for example. The film, which is based on a Shyamalan story, revolves around a group of five individuals who are trapped in a skyscraper elevator. The twist? One of them is the Devil. If you think that sounds interesting, just wait until you see the first trailer.

Offering a mix of psychological and supernatural horror, the Devil trailer hints at a movie that is suspenseful – and will keep audiences guessing.

Of course, no matter how good the movie looks, some people may not give it a chance – simply because they have been disappointed by Shyamalan’s more-recent films. Luckily for those people, Shyamalan isn’t directing.

Check out the first trailer for Devil produced by M. Night Shyamalan:

Devil is the first of three horror movies Shyamalan is producing as part of his The Night Chronicles series. The essential development process of The Night Chronicles goes something like this: Shyamalan comes up with an idea and then passes it off to a young emerging filmmaker.

This round, the job of actually directing Devil, falls to the hands of the brother team of Drew and John Erick Dowdle. The Dowdle brothers have already proven their horror movie chops (somewhat) as the writers of Quarantine (John Erick also directed the film). While that movie was essentially a shot for shot remake of Rec, the superior Spanish-language original, it still demonstrated the pair’s ability to create a consistently frightening and atmospheric horror-thriller.

Hopefully, they will deliver the same quality work on Devil and live up to the early promise shown in this trailer. If not, well, I guess we’ll just have to wait for Shyamalan’s redemption in The Last Airbender 2. Just kidding!

Devil opens on September 17th 2010

  1. Aknot you’ve brought up very valid points. Supernatural and Buffy play it off with a certain level of self depricating humor while still being very serious about it. To be completely truthful I enjoy those shows despite the demons not because of them. Supernatural uses the horror to tell a story the supernatural story is actually about demons and monsters it’s about the brothers and life in general. It’s a complex show that uses horror and humor to tell it’s story. Plain old cheese horror films like this the story is the horror. I’m not a fan of demons just like I don’t enjoy alien stories but I’m ok if the demons or Aliens are used to make a point and not just for the purpose to scare people and shock them. If there is a deeper story hidden under the story it makes it ok.

Also I’d add that I don’t like using the devil in this but what makes the film worse for me is the trapped in the elevator part. Also not a fan of using cheap scare tactics to get the Ahhhb out of people a quick flash on something spooky or a cat jumping out of a box. I hate cheap gags. Also horror movies (with some exceptions) tend to be pointless empty films made to shock people. There usually isn’t character development or any substance and they usually always follow the same formula. Still some can be fun even smart but this doesn’t seem like one of them. I read the concept and thought it sounded cheesy and boring. I thought the trailer couldn’t possibly make it look worse so I checked it out. Sadly the trailer made it look even more cheesy and boring and even showed cheap scare tactics.

No matter how un interested I am in a film I usually check it out to see if I could be wrong about it I usually check it out one way or another. This is one of the very very rare films I won’t even bother with. Maybe If I was paid to view or held at gun point. The only other film this year I can put on that list so far is airbender ironically enough another M Night film. I assure you though it isn’t about him. I had planned to check Airbender out on some point but the general view on the film as well as the review made me give it a permenant pass.

    • Well let me tell you… dont go see Airbender, even with a gun to your head.

As for the Devil movie it does look as though they are outside (main characters) at some point maybe they are taking trips through their past or something.

However it does look more like a 1 hour made for cable type thing. I wont see it in the theaters will wait for Netflix/DVD though.

  2. Rob,

there is a movie poster out there (on IMDB) and it has the tag line of:

Bad things happen for a reason, using the Down arrow for the V in Devil. Who knows maybe all 4 will go… :D

  3. That’s funny Aknot I was just thing it looked like the type of thing the current SyFy network would make and show lol. Ugh could you imagine their current products making it to theaters lol.

    • Daniel,

That is what I dont get about some of these projects. Be it comics, one shotters, history related etc.

Cable is the place to be. I Soooooooo wanted the Dragonlance series to be a cable thing. then that craptastic cartoon came out and I about burned all my books.

You now hear of George R. R. Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series coming to cable and the Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman.

From all appearances they look fantastic. From the actors to the people behind the scenes. It makes me shudder to think what “Hollywood” would have done to these 2 properties.

So while Hollywood probably pays the big bucks I think (HOPE) a lot more people/properties will look to cable to get their stuff out there.

  4. Well, just the fact this movie is going to the big screen says alot about grease on the wheel anyway, not alot of optimism from this corner.

  5. looks pretty bad to me.

  6. Thanks Vic;)
Well the happening was vary crappy,it couldve been waaayyyyy better,it was starting out good but the middle and ending killed the story……im hoping this isnt like that…….

  7. wow wait. this actually looks good. it reminds me of an old twilight zone episode.

  8. I wonder who’s doing the score? It sounds like a theme from James Newton Howard.

  9. I will not go to one of his movies in the theaters any longer. I’ll rent this from a redbox when it comes out and nothing more lol.

  10. Well i see it at the movies free cuz i work there;.)

  11. From now on Mr. Shyamalan is not aloowed to direct anymore movies. Just direct & produce. This movie looks good.

  12. Well this doesn’t look amazing by any means, but it looks kinda interesting. The problem about the Shyamalan debate is that either this movie is great and we can’t really give him that much credit because, he really didn’t do anything. But if it’s awful, then everyone will just blame it on him, even though, again, he didn’t really do that much.

    • Didn’t do that much!!! LOL seriously!! He wrote the freakin thing. Without him there is no “Devil”.

Hate how people like speilberg for example always get credit for awesome movies etc which they didn’t write. It really bugs me when people never mention a writer but say speilbergs new movie looks awesome etc.

No doubt speilberg is a fantastic DIRECTOR but he always gets undeserved credit for movies like Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Jaws, ET etc when all he did was direct.

What im saying is not one of those great movies would have happened without the writers yet they still would have happened without speilberg, granted they would be a bit different but essentially the writer is the person that is essential and they do not get enough credit in my opinion so to the guy that said that he didn’t do much really doesn’t know much about anything.

      • All he did was direct? Duuuuuddde. Do you have any idea how much work director’s do?

And as for the writers, yes, they are important, I’m not denying that. But to say all he did was direct is just crazy.

  13. This actually kinda freaked me out a little!

  14. After seeing the preview, and before I saw the title for the first time, I announced to my friends, “They should call this ‘Hellevator’.”

I still think my title is better, as cheesy and “SyFy” as it is. Though the movie itself looks like it may be worth seeing.

    Dear M. Night Shyamalan,

You had so much potential. Unbreakable was brilliant. Sixth Sense was moody and chilling. Signs had unexpected depth. I even enjoyed Lady in the Water for the meta-storytelling aspects. Where did it all go wrong?

Perhaps your visions will be handled more skillfully by others, and we’ll get some decent films from you again. As much as I enjoy the visual style of your direction, and many of your story ideas, it seems you shouldn’t be allowed to both write and direct at the same time anymore. Please take a step back and look at what you’ve done, and try to learn from past mistakes.

  15. Let me guess, in the spirit of Shyamalan’s movies the devil will actually turn out to be a kitten on the 3rd floor of the building.

  16. Wow… I would like to point out that there was laughing in the theater during the premeire of inception when this movie was advertised. Looks like the whole film is just them trapped in an elevator, new advertising campaign: THE MOST INCONVENIENT RIDE OF YOUR LIFE! I predict another flop is in the making for the notoriously overrated M. Night Shyamalan.

  17. dude this movie looks pretty good. I’ve been stuck in an elevator before and it was just one of the worst experiences and I couldn’t breathe. The people stuck in there with me were really weird too and started panicking which didn’t help the situation at all.. good thing we got out of there relatively quickly in 10 mins.. but longest 10 mins of my life.
