Devil May Cry Movie Screen Gems Planning Devil May Cry Movie

Screen Gems has made a boatload of money turning the popular Resident Evil video game series into a film franchise, so it should come as no surprise that the Sony subsidiary is planning to do the same thing with Devil May Cry.

According to a new report from Variety, Kyle Ward (who also wrote the upcoming video game movie Kane & Lynch) has been tapped to write the screenplay for Devil May Cry. Beyond that, not much is known about the project, but I’m sure that won’t stop eager gamers everywhere from trying to figure out who will play the demon-slaying Dante.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Devil May Cry video game series, which is now on its fifth sequel, here’s a brief summary of the first game. If you’re already familiar with the game, check out our sister website Game Rant to join in the discussion about the newest Devil May Cry game (which is actually a prequel to the series).

The series centers on main character Dante’s goal of avenging his mother’s murder by exterminating demons. The gameplay consists of heavy combat scenes in which the player must attempt to extend long chains of attacks while avoiding damage in order to exhibit stylized combat; this element along with time and amount of items collected and used are taken under consideration when grading the player’s performance.

Hmm. Heavy combat scenes? Long chains of attacks with stylized combat? Sounds like the kind of mindless action movie that could rake in major dollars at the box office. It’s no wonder Screen Gems wants to turn the game into a movie.

Interestingly, Devil May Cry was originally intended as a release for the Resident Evil series of games, but it was spun off into its own franchise for being too different. In addition to the upcoming film, the Devil May Cry series has also expanded into novels and comic books.

As we’ve discussed before here at Screen Rant, movies based on video games are frequently terrible, yet Hollywood insists on putting out more and more of them. Soon, producers will look at our list of ridiculous video game movie ideas and convince themselves that Frogger actually would make a good movie.

Is it a foregone conclusion that Devil May Cry will be bad simply because it’s a video game movie, or is there something unique to the story that will translate well to the big screen? If you’re a gamer, share your thoughts with us in the comments.

  1. I agree with ‘Josh’ on the first page.
I believe dialogue from the animated DMC series and the game plot itself would be a good lead and/or example for the movie’s dialogue. I suppose you just gotta tie them in correctly and precisely.

Also, I will admit that this DMC movie would most likely be better as a CGI made movie.I’m 90% sure. Although I know hoping that may not be enough, since CGI takes up a LOT of time and its definitely a LOT of work, too. But it’d be so much better, at least in my opinion, because you can still get the feel of the character without having an actual person mess things up. All you’d need is the voice acting for the cgi character.

Well, if the movie isn’t going to be cgi(which I think it should)and is going to have real actors…I remember several people on youtube agreeing to Reuben Langdon himself doing Dante…His acting and of course voice would match Dante perfectly, I think. Although I’m not sure appearance-wise. Langdon seems a bit or so thinner or more lanky than Dante. But whatever, appearances shouldn’t matter as much I guess? @_@”
I don’t know who I’d personally choose as Dante…I remember thinking Tom Cruise looks a bit like Dante lmao But forget that, I dont think it’d be right.
I’ll just stick with wishing for a cgi movie x’D
(hopefully this one will be thought about carefully)

    • oops my bad, I meant “CG” not “CGI”
      Sorry about that ^^”

  2. I THINK COULD BE IAN SOMERHALDER

    • I second this!
Ian Somerhalder woulds make an excellent Dante. I mean he pretty much carries Vampire Diaries on his back. The show would be nothing without him. He also has that feel about him the way he gives that cocky smile and arrogant stare. He could pull off Dante easily. Then there is the fact he looks like Dante. He is built well with ice blue eyes and the same hairstyle.
I really hope they consider him!

  3. ive played this game since little and it will suck if it turns out not so good because of bad actors or it doesnt stay with the story plot, and i agree with LOCO it could probably be ian somerhalder i mean whoever plays dante has to be hot, well anyway im really looking forward to it:)

  4. IT’ll BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOWW EVERYTHING WIIL TURN OUT TO BE AND JUST HOPE IT WONT BE A HUGE FAILIURE LIKE SOME PROJECTS IVE SEEN. . . . CANT WAIT TO SEE ALL THE SPECIAL EFECTS

    • True that my friend!!!!!!!! Wait? One and two or three and four???

  5. I GUESS I HAVE TO AGREE JUST AS LONG AS THIS MOVIE HAS A GOOD DIRECTOR AND WRITER AND NO CHEESY EFFECTS ITLL BE GOOD LETS NOT FORGET WHAT HAPPEND TO DBZ WHEN IT GOT TURNED INTO A MOVIE JUST AS LONG AS DANTE STILL HAS HIS ATTITUDE ,THEN YES I AS WELL WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS JUST PLEASE PPL DONT F**K IT UP NOT MY FAVROITE GAME

  6. Ian somerhalder is the best for playing the role as Dante….

  7. brad pitt….any questions..

  8. i agree with SolitaryKairi because DMC is something that you wont wanna be messed. It should be CG because there will be a lot of animations difficult to do with human characters, just like dante’s transitions in devil arms and styles which wouldn’t look attractive when done on real life….

BTW, hope this game will end up satisfying the cravings of DMC fans…

  9. Please don’t let them screw this up like they did with Prince of Persia…and yes Ian Somerhalder would be good for Dante, but the movie would be better animated.

  10. Between this and golden sun, I think it may actually turn out decent. Just due to the simple fact of action, they focus on that and a s***** storyline it’ll be good, but I think they shld follow the games but start out with dmc3 dantes awakaning.

  11. the movie needs to have the same plot as the game and the movie needs to have someone who looks like dante, well have dantes hair color in it or atleast maybe someone who wont mind haveing a silver streak in the hair or all silver!
i hope the movies great and doesnt suck:o
devil may cry fan for life:)

  12. I friggin love DMC the games and series and the sound of a movie sounds amazing but I really hope they don’t mess it up and do the saga the justice it deserves

  13. Im a great fan of this game,so my opinion is that they make an animated movie(CG),because im sure that what everyone expects about the movie,is to be at least 99% similar as the games,so it’ll be hard to make it perfect with real actors. And as for the story(i don’t know if they tell a lot about his childhood life a lot on dmc 5) but if they don’t i think you guys should write a story about that, also tell ur how is father(The Legendary Sparda) really died, something like.So for my opinion,i think a 3d animated movie with that story would be better.

  14. all i can say is, i cant wait for a dmc4 movie. nero is my fav character from all of them

  15. Jared Padalecki. If he could play Eric Draven he can sure as Hell play Dante. :)

  16. I personally don’t tho I Solmerhaulder (?) would make a good Dante, but who knows. I may only be 13 but means my best friend love the anime, manga and the PS2 version of the second game. I also think tha James Marsters would make an epic Dante, and I’ve seen what he can do (I grew up with Buffy, SCREW YOU BELLA!!) anyways, we also think that he show have he same look as be did from the 1st and 2nd games, he looks lien Justin beiber in the last eat ones, but I think taut Solmerhaulder(?) would make a good Vergil or Nero. And I don’t quite understand why Lady and Triah may be in the movie but Lucia won’t??? EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!!

  17. i am a true devil may cry fan i even went as far as writing a script for a DMC film which i believe the best adaptation of the film is to cover the events of devil may cry 3 which prove to be the prequel to the original 4 games that way for people who never seen or played the game can get an understanding of dante and his story building his fan base further than gamers the script remember dante was young brash stylish down right awesome every form or fashion

  18. i admit that langdon would be better cause he looks abit like him. but this guy who cosplayed russia off of hetalia is like exactly looks like dante. http://www.nerdist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/hetalia__ivan_braginsky_by_raskolnikova_sonya-d2zb4qp-615×486.jpg

  19. Go for it I’ve always loved the character Dante and the weapons he carried. I wish they made those cool looking guns. Because if they did i would have to buy me a pair

  20. This is going to suck there i said it!Devil May Cry are awsome games i own everyone(even dmc 2).Though when they make a movie based on a game they try to make it for everyone witch alienates the fans. Then none gamers going in and have no clue whats going on.If they are going to make a Devil May Cry movie. They should keep it like the games.A castlelvani theme style.outrages action scenes, keep the story the same, get actors who understand the material or get reuben langdon to play dante also alot of heavey metal.Though they wont lisson to me so i know waisting my breath.Though its kinda nice to think about a good devil may cry movie then the reality knowing its going to suck.

  21. IAN SOMERHALDER

  22. Hollywood is going to f*** up this movie hands down and there is nobody that cant play as the hoime Dante …..

By a true fan and big bro

  23. i would really like it to be more based on the original dmc story rather than its reboot……the previous story kinda rocks…..
