Casting Marvel's Thor Movie

In the last month, we’ve seen some major movement on Marvel’s upcoming Thor movie. Major casting decisions were announced with Chris Hemsworth set to play Thor and Tom Hiddleston to play Loki, and we’ve heard director Kenneth Branagh talk about the cast and nailing down the shooting schedule.

With the big announcements made, we’re starting to finally see some more general news on the movie including these two interviews that I’ll discuss in this article.

CineFOOLS had the opportunity to speak with one of the writers of Thor movie, Ashley Miller (the other being Zack Stentz) and they had a lengthy interesting discussion about the film and their goals in writing it. Miller is a huge fan of the Thor comics (a big plus for the readers of the books) and he actually owns the complete Simonson run of the series among others. You’ll see that those comics in particular are helping inspire aspects of the screenplay.

I’ve selected some of the more interesting and relevant questions and responses for you to see.

To start, CineFOOLS asked how the writers make a character based in another world not only realistic for the viewers, but fit with the other characters in Marvel Studios’ other films.

“Thor’s powers are godly, yes. And his zip code is a little different. But at the end of the day, he’s a man. In the comics, Odin sends him to Earth because he’s not perfect. He’s brash, arrogant. Even over-confident. We all know that guy — some of us have even been that guy. Stan Lee’s genius was to give Thor-as-hero an emotional throughline we could all relate to, and knock him down a couple of pegs. So on that level, your question answers itself. The challenge is to dramatize that and make the audience see what the fans have known and believed about the character all along.

As for realism, I have to ask you back: what does that mean? If the standard is, does he throw his back out if he hurls the hammer a little too hard… probably not. He’s a god. He’s incredibly strong. He can fly. He tosses lightning bolts. There’s nothing realistic about any of that. But he also bleeds. He struggles. Life kicks him where it hurts the most. Dramatically speaking, the powers and Asgard are gravy. The meat — and what makes it a Marvel movie — is the character.”

Next, they asked if any particular storylines from the comics acted as an inspiration for the film and you can probably guess the answer:

“So many things. Certainly, Walt Simonson’s take on the character greatly informs what we brought to the script although I wouldn’t say we went to a specific story from his tenure on the book. We saw part of our job as taking all the many approaches to the character over the years (including the myths) and distilling them down into a form that worked for a two-hour movie. There’s a tremendous amount of ground to cover, so inspiration has to come from everywhere.”

The next part is exciting. CineFOOLS asked Ashley how he wants Thor should be portrayed what he’d like to bring to the character in his writing. His response:

“Grit. Not in the sense that you’d want to see a generic “dark” take on Thor, but in the sense that you want to feel Thor’s rage when he rages. You want to see him fight like hell, and take as much he dishes out — maybe more. You want to have a visceral reaction to the guy, and what happens to him. You don’t want his adventures to be clean and antiseptic. You want to see the dirt, and grime and blood. You want to feel every bone crunching moment of every fight. And when he unleashes the storm, you want to feel like you’re seeing the power of a GOD at work.

The best example I can give you is the end of Ultimates 2. When Thor shows up and kicks ass, he shows up and kicks ass. He isn’t screwing around. There’s a certain brutal, cock-eyed realism to Thor in that moment (and through that book in general) that I really resonate to and want to expand on.”

And that’s exactly how it should be done in my mind – Just thinking about this movie is getting me excited for it.

  1. .

  2. Um, is that like your way of saying “first?”

Man I hate the comingsoon comments because of those people, like they think they are going to be famous for it or something, lol.

Anyway, these guys seem pretty passionate about it, which is cool, but I was hoping that they would somehow try to base his abilities more on reality, like somehow explain them with technology but it looks like they won’t do that. Hope it looks good next to the other Marvel movies. Would hate for them all to start getting supernatural especially Iron Man…

  3. Whats soo special about being first?

As for the movie I can’t wait to see it.

  4. Absolutely nothing is special, some people just have really boring lives and I guess being first on a free internet blog site somehow makes them feel special.

Sometimes I don’t understand how other peoples’ brain works, because I try to put myself in their shoes to feel “cool” just because I’m first, and I can’t even imagine it… It’s weird.

  5. Ken,

Yeah thats one of the reasons why I don’t post on ComingSoon anymore….other than the fact that I got banned :D

  6. LOL, what did you do to get banned?

Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask you, are you “Matt K” or is that someone else with the same first name and first letter of last name??

  7. Ken,

Yep I just starting putting full last name(don’t ask why). I got banned b/c I was commenting on post for the new Transformers film and some kid said something, and we just kept on making fun of each other back and forth.

  8. I remember what he said now…he said I was a loser for liking the film.

  9. Hopefully I won’t be the only champion behind this project now!

  10. @Matt

Well, I bet he didn’t get banned since he was right… lol just kidding man. :-P

  11. it’s not a first thing you dope. It was a typo, didn’t mean to hit the enter button. Stop assuming you know everything ken.

  12. Look who’s assuming? I’m making general comments, they were not directed at you. Did you see anywhere in my description of these people where I said “people like cat” or anything like that? Have I EVER been shy in directing jokes directly at someone? LMAO, you know I’m not, if I was speaking directly to you or about you, your name would be all over it, trust me. I ASKED if that was your way of saying frist, until you answer, I won’t assume it was, but that won’t stop me from making fun of people who do that.

But anyway, if that was a typo, then why don’t you go ahead and say what you meant to say before you accidentally hit enter (which I assume is tab then enter since enter alone just makes the cursor go down one line…)

  13. Because I got caught up in something else …

    [edited by Rob]

  14. @Ken J

Come on, don’t be a putz and play like you weren’t directing that at Cat:

“Um, is that like your way of saying “first?””

    It’s pretty clear, dude.

I assumed it was a typo on her part when I saw it.

    Vic

  15. Cat never writes “first” or “.” anywhere else so it’s safe to assume it was just a mistake. We won’t let people start this “first” crap on Screen Rant anyways.

  16. …and still no comment on the article…

And I was wrong, in order for you to hit Post Comment, you have to hit [TAB] twice, only once will go to the “Manage your subscriptions” link. So I guess what I MEANT to say in that post is Tab Tab then Enter…

  17. So… regarding the article, it bodes very well for the film. Hopefully what Miller has said can transition to the screen.

  18. Come on Vic, you know me, if I actually was directing it at cat, I would direct it at him. That first line was just me showing suspicion, but ultimately I was asking, if his answer was no, then oh well, if it was yes, then apply insults. It got me thinking about people who do do that (lol, I said doodoo) so I’m not going to hold my insults until I got his answer.

And when have you scolded me about something and I would deny it. I really don’t care if someone is insulted, I would admit to it. If I was directly making those statements about cat you know I’m never shy to admit it, I have no reason to “play” anything. If only his answer was yes, then you would see me directing the insults directly to him, with “cat” at the beginning or end of every sentence, lol. And then more scolding from you, then me saying “sorry Vic” and sitting in time out…

Those people are retarded though… That’s all you see in the comments of comingsoon’s articles, so annoying… it’s like they think they just won a cookie or something…

But anyway, you’re not occupied anymore right cat? So feel free to post what you meant to post anytime now.

  19. @Rob

PLEASE, instant ban on any of those, I think if anyone is dumb enough to think they are cool for that, we really don’t need to read any of their comments, seriously.

  20. You know what else is so annoying? Off topic ranting.

  21. Sounds like they have a specific vision for Thor and his world.

  22. @arrell

Oh snap! I’ve been told! :-D LMAO

@Gary, definitely, which is good in that it doesn’t seem like they will do whatever they think will make them the most money, they actually have a plan and will roll with it. Usually results in a more cohesive story and fewer plot holes, but I’m not sure if I like their vision, although it is closer to the comic than what I thought would be good to see on the screen. I’m sure it’ll be good though, I have a good feeling about this production team.

  23. He completely skirted by the question of how this works in the real world. Yes, it is a little far fetched that there is a man who invented a super intelligent suit of armor, as it is that there is a guy who – with the help of a super serum and some crazy radiation, turns big and green when he gets angry.

However, all of these things are happening to humans. Now suddenly we are to believe that there is this other race of humanoids with god-like powers that we have never seen or heard before until now? I just don’t see how you work this into a story line with any sort of “realism.”

  24. brilliant article, really looking forward to this film!

but why is everyone so worried about it being “realistic” is the comic realistic? is it atal realistic to have godly powers, or be half man half spider? lol come on guys this is the whole point in it being a film cos reality is boring!
otherwise you’ll have a film aobut thor taking a dump or getting a KFC when hes hungry if u wanted realism.

  25. About the realism…Isn’t the general concensus that the Iron Man movies are going to lead to the Mandarin who has magical rings? Gods from other worlds don’t seem like such a stretch. I think people will just accept the blending of real and unreal things knowing all these stories are from comic books. Also, I think seeing the “realistic” characters discovering and accepting the “unrealistic” will be a very cool thing to watch unfold.

  26. All this is it realistic talk has me confused …

So you’re saying Santa IS real?
That dinosaurs DO roam the Earth on deserted island theme parks?
That there are big, giant transforming robots bent on the destruction of our planet?
That one man – Indiana Jones – can survive falling from THREE GIANT FREAKIN’ WATERFALLS and not even get wet?
That a giant flaming eye on top of a mountain is trying to take over the world – using a ring?
Three kids can walk through a wardrobe be transported to another realm, meet crazy creatures, and all of a sudden be the greatest warriors the universe has ever seen?

AND the most unbelievable aspects of movie magic ever …
that Seth Rogen DOES actually date and marry incredibly beautiful women?

Just making sure I understand that movies are all about the “realism”.

  27. Also in regards to the “realism” that people are worried about with Thor. All one has to say is Superman. basically same premise. Hero that comes from a different world, has to be humbled or raised to be humble to appreciate human life, etc.

I think this movie is going to make me cry when I see it. I’ve been collecting/reading Thor for 20 years.

  28. Awesome interviews!!! I am psyched for the Thor movie now, it sounds like they have a great group behind the movie who knows what they’re doing with the character.

I grimaced a bit at the reference to Ultimate Thor though. I really don’t follow any of the Ultimates and I’m hoping they’ll still base more of the Thor movie around the regular continuity Thor.

  29. Since ken is the new moderator of this website let me post my opinion before he gets angry and starts stalking me.

It sounds like they are heading in the right direction with things. Keep it simple and stick to the basics. Don’t try to add things to please a younger audience but I somewhat like the idea of Ultimate Thor.

Ken, your explanation of hitting tab once or twice or whatever is ridiculous because I didn’t mean to post anything – it was an accident. Who knows, I walked away from my computer for a second and came back. My sister could have done it for all I know since she’s five years old but I wouldn’t have known so cut me some slack. I already get enough crap for loving transformers. And I don’t need someone else bitching at me – that’s what the wife is for.
