WARNING: This article contains minor SPOILERS for Destiny 2

-

The gameplay of Destiny 2 is being widely praised, but there's more to the game than players probably expect. While making their way through the main story campaign, players have probably noticed some of their peers showing off new powers, strange effects, or seeming to be engaged in solving elaborate puzzles completely hidden from their eyes. When the campaign ends, and these activities have never been explained, players will finally realize how much of the game's fun lies outside of the spotlight - where the developers' idea of a joke and challenge can really push players to new (and insane) levels.

The developers of the Halo series made a name for themselves with their obscure secrets hidden in impossible-to-reach places. So it shouldn't be surprising that their loyal fans would turn up the same in Destiny 2 within days of release. We've gathered up our favorites, along with walkthroughs to make sure every player can join in on the fun.

5. The Tower's Secret Room

The Tower unlocked when the campaign is completed is bigger and more intricate than in the first Destiny, but there's an extra room players can access for a hint at a story yet to be told. To find it, head towards the main Hangar upon arriving in the Courtyard, down the staircase, around the corner to the right, and straight ahead through the blue-lit hallway towards the main hangar. When you enter the hangar, keep in mind that the catwalk directly ahead of you (marked by an easy to spot welder) is where you want to go - to access the catwalk directly over the entrance you're walking through (marked by another such welder). Head up the staircase to the right and cross towards the first welder, and you'll be able to spot a gap in the opposite catwalk's railing. Hop the railing directly in front of the nearby lights, and the gap should be jumpable at a sprint.

From there it' s a short run and squeeze through ductwork to find the room. Once inside the room, players will find a simple goblet and a journal - once belonging to a woman named 'Ana Bray.' That's a name that should ring some bells for seasoned players fond of the larger Destiny lore, and we have our own theory on the Ana Bray mystery in Destiny 2. Little is known about the hero beyond her valor, but your ghost notes that something about the heavily-edited journal feels "wrong"... so perhaps the legend told to Guardians isn't the real story?

4. The Floor is Lava Challenge

The game may be filled with mighty warriors and proud Guardians, but they still know how to let their inner child run loose. As is the case with the "The Floor is Lava Challenge" concealed on the Tower. Upon spawning in, make your way up the slanting wall to your left, to the highest level of the Tower. In the middle of walkway (roughly over top of the spot you spawned in) you'll notice a few crates of power cells. Approach the cells, and they'll make the danger clear with a prompt stating "Don't Pick Me Up." Pick one up anyway, and congratulations: you have begun the Floor is Lave Challenge where... well, the floor is lava.

One of a trio of possible locations will then be illuminated, challenging players to pick their way to the finish line without coming into contact with the concrete floor of the Tower. Each of the three will pose a different challenge, so for tips or direct routes, be sure to read our guide to Destiny 2's Floor is Lava Challenge.

3. Soccer Returns - Only GIANT This Time

Over the years Bungie has made a habit out of developing complicated, refined shooter experiences... and then injecting ridiculous objects in hopes that the player base will use them to create unpredictable new mini-games. That was the case with Halo, so when a soccer ball and oversized, floaty purple ball were discovered in the first Destiny's tower, few were surprised. Fans will be pleased to know that the games make a return in Destiny 2, but like everything else with the game, it's bigger... and more polished.

The first chance to try your luck at a game of footie can be found on The Farm, in a field set aside complete with two sets of goals. Kick the ball into either end three times in a row, and a fireworks show will announce the winner. When players leave The Farm behind for the spectacle of space, the game scales with them. When you've unlocked the final Tower after the game's campaign has been completed, head deep into the Hangar to find a much larger field, and a far more impressive fireworks show for the winner.

2. The Tower's Glowing, Bouncing, Giant Ball Game

Players of the very first Destiny made a complicated gag out of a developer joke, inserting an oversized ball into the game's social spaces. And for Destiny 2, they took it to the next level. Well, four or five levels, to be more precise. You're likely to eventually see one or more players in the Tower's social space kicking a glowing ball from one side to the other, without any idea why, or for what ultimate goal. It's actually a sequence of four different balls, all possessing different weights, and all required to be kicked into a specific place to unlock the next in the chain.

When each one has been driven home, a massive floating model of the Traveler (complete with a Destiny logo) will be brought into the Tower. Far lighter than all the others, it's as if a miniature moon has come to visit. The sequence, locations, and strategies are a bit complicated to explain here, so head over to our Destiny 2 giant Tower ball game guide for all the details (and good luck).

1. Scouting Speed Run on The Farm

If all this talk of amplified jump mechanics has got you wishing there was actually a point to it all, then a trip to The Farm is definitely what you're after. A special "scouting" mission has been concealed just below the surface, unlocked once players traverse the area - without touching the ground. Players will need to achieve two tasks to make that happen: walk/run on top of the water wheel, and run along the cables connecting the space's buildings together. It doesn't matter what order they're achieved in, so players can leap to the water wheel from the nearby tent to complete 'Wheel Boost' for 2X Sentry Ranks, then run across the wires connecting to the farmhouse and complete 'Vertigo' in the process, or vice versa.

Once the 4 Setnry points are accrued, leap on over to the bonfire near the shore. You'll be given a prompt to unlock a special scouting mission unlike any you've tried before. It's effectively a race, challenging players to put their new amplified jumping to the test. Beams of light will mark waypoints that must be rushed to in order to unlock the next - ten in all - within a time limit. The time limit isn't impossible to beat, and it's repeatable to the player's delight. Enjoy!
