Universal scored a big win in the animated feature category with their 2010 film Despicable Me, which grossed over $540 million at the worldwide box office and made icons out of those pellet-shaped rascals known as the Minions. With that kind of success story, it's only natural that the studio would want bring Despicable Me 2 to theaters - and today's teaser trailer for the sequel announces that intent in familiar cutesy fashion.

The Minions are center stage in this first Despicable Me 2 trailer, doing a rendition of some barbershop quartet number with a one-eyed pellet-head blowing on a party horn in what is obviously supposed to be 3D moment. Check it out in 2D (for what it's worth) below:

Now check out a sparse synopsis on what Despicable Me 2 is kinda, sorta, about:

In Summer 2013, get ready for more minion madness in Despicable Me 2. Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy animated adventure featuring the return of Gru (Steve Carell), the girls, the unpredictably hilarious minions...and a host of new and outrageously funny characters.

So, old faces, a few new faces and a new situation. Sounds about right.

Despicable Me was heavily marketed for its cartoon villain showdown between former public enemy #1, Gru (Carrell) and the new top baddie, Vector (Jason Segel). In fact, the film was a very humorous (at times enjoyably sappy) story of Gru coming to care for three orphan girls who eventually melt his cold heart. It stands to reason that the sequel picks up on Gru in his new domestic life, likely called back to mischief by some threat and/or having to prove he still has his bad guy mojo.

Despicable Me 2 will be in theaters on July 3, 2013
