Hugh Jackman has appeared in every single X-Men movie to date, most of the time as a lead character. The only time Jackman’s fan-favorite Wolverine wasn’t the star was in the ’60s set X-Men: First Class where he made a cameo appearance.
Now that the Aussie star has made it official that 2017’s untitled Wolverine 3 will be his last time playing the character, the only way he can keep his record going strong is to appear in not one, not two, but three X-Men movies next year, including Deadpool which is currently in production in Vancouver.
After Ryan Reynolds played a small but memorable part as Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool in Jackman’s first solo movie in the franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Jackman said he’s absolutely up for returning the favor with a cameo appearance in Deadpool. Jackman previously expressed interest last year in seeing the two get a proper rematch on the big screen (before Deadpool was even greenlit by Twentieth Century Fox) and it still might happen according to Reynolds who tells News.com.au that he remains hopeful.
“God I hope so, that would be really nice. I dunno, we’ll see. It seems like he’s open to it, but it’s gonna be more of a scheduling issue than anything else.”
In terms of scheduling, Jackman might be busy playing the character on the other coast of Canada, where X-Men: Apocalypse is shooting in Montreal. Everyone involved with the production of the Days of Future Past followup has been strangely silent regarding what potential role, if any, Jackman will have in Apocalypse even if it seems like an absolute given from how his story arc concluded in the ’70s.
We do believe Wolverine will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse since there’s no way the biggest ensemble yet for the franchise would skip their most popular character, especially if it’s leading to the end of the Wolverine’s story the following year. The question now is if and how Deadpool will tie into these other movies and if Jackman can manage a cameo. The same can be said about Channing Tatum’s Gambit (another popular character problematically introduced in X-Men Origins: Wolverine who’s also getting a solo spinoff reboot…) which also debuts in 2016.
Will Jackman pop up there too before finishing his career as the Adamantium-enhanced soldier in March 2017?
Fantastic Four opens August 7th, 2015, Deadpool on February 12th, 2016, X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27th, 2016, Gambit on October 7th, 2016, Wolverine 3 (not the official title) on March 3rd, 2017, Fantastic Four 2 on June 9th, 2017, and some as-yet unspecified X-Men film on July 13th, 2018.
