With Deadpool premiering this weekend and advanced reviews being generally positive, it's hard to believe that the character began as a relatively boring assassin who lacked his current humor and awareness of the comic book world that he lives in. Though he was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza in 1991, it wasn't until 1997 that Deadpool fully transitioned to the action-comedy character that we all know and love.

Now, Deadpool is going back to his roots with a new Deadpool movie poster from Mondo. The art for the poster is done by Liefeld himself, presenting the Merc with a Mouth in all of his comic book glory.

The poster, which was revealed on Mondo's Twitter account, features Deadpool with two guns drawn, before a background that appears to be on fire. The top of the poster is emblazoned with the quote "'The most attractive hero of all time.' -Deadpool", while the bottom of the poster proclaims "Deadpool in DEADPOOL" and contains the credits and rating information for the film. Though it's hard to tell from the image contained in the tweet, we can assume that all of the movie credits information is correct. Once the poster was revealed, Liefeld tweeted his excitement at the piece finally seeing the light of day.

As the two above images show, the poster isn't the only Deadpool-related piece released by Mondo, either. Two additional Deadpool prints were also revealed, designed by Phantom City Creative. The prints feature Deadpool hanging around with the movie title and the "With Great Power Comes Great Irresponsibility" tagline seen in the film's marketing materials. Both prints will be available on the Mondo website on February 12.

While the Phantom City prints are nice, it's the Liefeld poster that really steals the show. The best thing about it is that it's almost hard to tell whether it's supposed to be a poster for the movie or a piece of comic art detailing a movie starring the actual Deadpool. The fact that it blurs that line just a little works so well given the self-awareness of the character himself, and seeing a version of this poster on the wall in a Deadpool comic wouldn't seem out of place at all.

Unfortunately, the Liefeld poster (and a variant edition featuring lighter colors on a black background) is a limited edition item; it will go on sale on Mondo's website on February 12, with an announcement on Mondo's Twitter account at the moment of release. The standard edition is limited to 325 pieces, while the variant is limited to 175. Given the positive feedback from the poster, it's likely that both versions will sell out rather quickly.
