Ryan Reynolds, star of Deadpool 2, welcomes Josh Brolin as Cable after the casting was announced earlier today. After months of rumors and reported frontrunners, Brolin has officially been cast in the highly coveted role for Deadpool 2. Brolin’s career is long and varied, but this marks his second Marvel Comics character, and he could be playing them both for some time. While Thanos is strictly a voice and mo-cap role for Brolin, the opportunity to land a leading role in another big comic book movie franchise and work with the talented group assembled must have been too big of an opportunity for him to pass up.
Unlike Thanos, Brolin will actually be seen in this role and has reportedly signed a four picture deal to play Cable for the foreseeable future. His casting has brought out reactions from just about everyone – including Brolin and Cable’s creator Rob Liefeld – and now it’s Ryan Reynolds’ turn as he has welcomed his newest co-star.
Reynolds shared his reaction to the casting over Twitter and played up the continuity trouble this could cause. While his caption questions the decision from Fox, Reynolds had a lot of power in choosing the actor. The photo accompanying the tweet features Brolin’s face designed in Deadpool’s latte, as well as a domino designed as Cable and another as Zazie Beetz’s Domino. The napkin meanwhile features all four members of the Golden Girls just for fun.
The fuck, Fox! You can't play 2 characters in the same universe!! Josh Brolin was in Sicario and I was in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. pic.twitter.com/AQCRp1aWKg— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) April 12, 2017
The approval from Reynolds is strictly fun, yet all but a formality. Since he also serves as a producer on Deadpool 2 and other Deadpool related X-Men films, Brolin would not have been cast without the approval of the Merc with a Mouth himself. Before landing this role, Brolin certainly had chemistry tests with Reynolds (and probably Beetz too) to make sure the casting would work well on screen. Brolin is a supremely talented actor and should have little trouble transforming into the time-traveling mutant ahead of the reported June start date.
With the casting of the two new major characters now official, Fox will be able to move on to casting the villain and other new roles for the film. If it does start filming in just two months, these announcements should be coming rather quickly as the movie rounds into shape and works out any necessary changes. As the rest of the announcements start to trickle in in the coming weeks, expect Reynolds to continue to have fun with these announcements as they happen. He previously found a clever way to announce Beetz’s casting, so these antics should continue up until production begins.
