It is no exaggeration to say that few comic book movies have achieved the special kind of success that Fox found with Deadpool. This isn’t just because the film grossed record-breaking totals or that it employed a unique and often hilarious promotional campaign in the months and weeks leading up to the movie’s release. Rather, Deadpool brought with it an R-rating and a disposition that refused to take itself too seriously.

The end result was a movie that stayed true to the comic book anti-hero that fans know and love. The snappy fourth-wall breaking dialog and dark humor proved a successful formula that stretched beyond the typical Hollywood superhero trope. But as preparations continue on the film’s upcoming sequel, the entire production was rocked by recent news that Deadpool director Tim Miller has officially stepped down from the project over creative differences with Ryan Reynolds.

As Deadpool 2 now scrambles to find a replacement director in time for next year’s slated production schedule, Screen Geek reports that a new online fan-made petition is pushing for Quentin Tarantino to take on the sequel’s directing duties. Citing Tarantino’s action filmmaking skills in the Kill Bill franchise as well as the writer/director’s affinity for razor-sharp dialog, the petition offers an “almost guaranteed” opportunity for Deadpool 2 to make a billion dollars should Tarantino hop on board the upcoming sequel.

"If there was ever a chance to see Tarantino do a project almost guaranteed to make a billion dollars, this is it. We got a great taste of what this could be like in Kill Bill, but imagine having a guy like Tarantino write dialogue for The Merc with the Mouth! It would be so glorious. Join me!"

Deadpool

This isn’t the first time that Tarantino’s name has been thrown around with regard to a superhero movie, or even a Ryan Reynolds superhero movie, for that matter. Back in 2009 Reynolds spoke about his dream of having Tarantino direct the first Deadpool movie and Tarantino himself revealed that although he’d been offered the chance to direct 2011's Green Lantern, he was not interested in taking on an existing comic book or character.

For his part, Tarantino has most recently stated that he is developing a new project set during the 1970s, which revolves around American cinema at the time. As far as a fan petition goes, it’s highly unlikely that it will have any impact on his current career plans. The Pulp Fiction director has already stated that he intends to retire after directing 10 films, which means that he only has two films left in him until that deadline arrives. Seeing as he’s previously made it clear that he isn’t interested in directing existing material, the idea that he would drop this stance in order to make Deadpool 2 due to an online fan petition is ambitious, to say the least.

Tarantino has made a career out of defying expectations, but this would certainly be taking things to the next level. Deadpool 2 will find a new director in time, that much is certain, and when it does, the chances are it will be someone Ryan Reynolds personally believes can deliver the kind of film that fans deserve. There’s always going to be a list of dream directors, but in this case the most important thing is simply finding the best filmmaker for the job.
