Deadpool may have defied the general comic book movie tropes in many ways, but when it came to the credits, it followed suit with the countless films that have come before. Marvel Studios brought back the post-credit scenes in the MCU, and even though Deadpool had one as a joke, it also teased what – or more importantly who – will be introduced in Deadpool 2. Cable was name dropped to make his big screen debut in the sequel, and ever since people have been wondering who would get the coveted role.
Everyone from Stephen Lang and Kyle Chandler to Ron Perlman and more have been linked to the role by speculation, actual reporting, and any other avenue. The most recent name thrown into contention was former 007 Pierce Brosnan when he, Ryan Reynolds, and Hugh Jackman shared a suspicious photo. While initially thought to be a case of fans reading too much into a particular photo, new evidence suggests that the stars are aligning for him to land the role.
On the newest episode of Meet the Movie Press, Simon Thompson – a reporter for a variety of outlets – spoke briefly about his recent chat with Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. At the John Wick: Chapter 2 premiere, Thompson jokingly congratulated Leitch on bringing Brosnan aboard as Cable because of the photo, but Leitch’s response, “We have not, yet,” led Thompson to pose the question to Tracking Board’s Jeff Sneider and Variety’s Justin Kroll if there was something there. This brought Sneider to comment back saying, “Justin can’t say anything, but, yeah, I’ve heard it’s going to him.”
While this initially looks to be confirmation that Brosnan will be Cable, the reporters then speculated what role Brosnan specifically would play. They all agreed that Cable is the most likely outcome, but also suggested that he could be in line to play the villain – which is currently unknown.
Should this be the direction that Reynolds, Leitch, and company go, Brosnan would fit the older mold they were reportedly looking for. Brosnan has experience as an action star, but would need to bulk up for this role most likely. Muscle size aside, Brosnan’s age (63 going on 64) upon first impression does seem older than expected if Cable is going to transition into being a leading member of the X-Men universe, specifically X-Force.
However possible this may be, it is important to note that neither Sneider nor Kroll wrote this as an official story, so it may not pan out. That said, they did further note that Reynolds has the power to announce all casting decisions when he wants thanks to his role behind the scenes, so any confirmations could come straight from the Merc with a Mouth himself. If this report does ultimately prove to be true, the previous photo of Brosnan, Reynolds, and Jackman becomes even more interesting as it could further hint to Wolverine making a cameo in Deadpool 2 as well. That announcement is likely not going to come for some time, but if Brosnan is in the running as reported, it could only be a matter of time before Deadpool finds his Cable.
