Each year brings more and more comic book movies into theaters, and with the new plan for studios being the creation of cinematic universes, they will have to explore all corners of the source material. This year started out proving just that with Fox finally releasing Deadpool, the R-rated film set within their X-Men timeline that was stuck in a development hole for the past decade. Now that Fox knows what it has with Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth, a sequel has been a no brainer. While Deadpool 2 does not have a release date just yet, the post credit scene for the first installment teased a new addition to the cast for the sequel.
Cable will make his way onto the big screen and after teasing Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren, or even Keira Knightley, actors and fans have thrown names into the ring. However, if the latest rumor proves to be true, someone who has not yet been rumored could be the one to get the coveted role.
On the latest episode of Meet the Movie Press, film reporter for Mashable.com, Jeff Sneider, dropped the following news, while prefacing said news with a “huge grain of salt.” Sneider is reporting that actor Kyle Chandler has been the name that has continued to be circulated with the role. Standing at 6’1″, Chandler has the frame to potentially play the role. Chandler is arguably best known for his work on Bloodline, where his serious demeanor fits perfectly with what Cable should bring. Chandler is not the big name that comes with the addition of someone like Gibson or Lundgren, but would be a great addition to the Deadpool 2 cast. In fact, he was at the top of our list of candidates to play the character.
This was not the only bit of information that Sneider dropped however, as he also revealed a name being considered for Domino. Apparently, Mackenzie Davis is also being considered for the role, which Sneider describes as the “scene stealer of the movie.” Shortly after Deadpool 2 was announced, Domino’s involvement began to be rumored. Similarly to Chandler, Davis is not a household name yet, but following her role in The Martian and upcoming role in Blade Runner 2, Fox could be capitalizing on her before she breaks out.
It should not be a surprise that either of these characters are going to be involved with this movie, but don’t get too excited about Chandler and Davis playing the parts until Fox makes it official down the line. Sneider admits to not making calls on this report in quite some time, so it is possible that either or both of them have since passed on the role, or Fox decided to go in a different direction themselves. Both of these would be great choices should this come to be. But until then, take the report with a grain of salt just as Sneider says.
Wolverine 3 opens in U.S. theaters on March 3rd, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017, March 2nd, 2018, and June 29th, 2018. Deadpool 2, Gambit, New Mutants and X-Force are currently in development.
