It’s hard to judge which X-Men property has more buzz right now, Deadpool 2 or Logan. The latter has been impressing critics and earning Fox a lot of money, as it sends off the fan-favorite character. But Deadpool was all most people were talking about last year, and the anticipation for his planned sequel next year is a source of constant excitement for fans. That’s only increased thanks to the fun teaser for the sequel, featured ahead of Logan. Despite its short running time, it’s been the talk of social media and somehow packed in a number of Easter eggs. It also hinted at a potential front-runner for the role of Cable.

That speculation has seen everyone from Pierce Brosnan to Stranger ThingsDavid Harbour thrown into the running for the time-traveling mutant. Meanwhile, we know the mutant Domino will also be joining the sequel. A gifted mercenary with luck-based powers, she’s had a long history with Deadpool and Cable. As such, we’ve seen just as much buzz surrounding who might potentially play her. While early reports pointed towards Kerry Washington, a new rumor posits that singer-turned actor Janelle Monáe may be Fox’s top choice for the role.

That Hashtag Show are reporting that one of their sources has discovered that the Hidden Figures and Moonlight star is the leading candidate to play Domino, aka Neena Thurman. Given her quickly rising star in Hollywood thanks to her work in two of last year’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated films (one of which won Best Picture, no less), it makes sense that a studio would want to recruit her for a big-budget film. Given her look and age, Monáe is certainly a match for Domino, too.

[UPDATE: Deadpool 2 writer Rhett Reese refuted the rumor on Twitter, simply stating, “Wrong.”]

Domino Marvel Comica Deadpool 2: Janelle Monáe the Frontrunner for Domino [Updated]

While Deadpool 2 hardly needs help garnering attention, adding in a prestige performer like Monáe could certainly help boost the film’s profile. What’s more, it would offer the actor the chance to expand her chops by focusing on action and comedy. There’s also a strong chance that the Domino character will go on to star in the X-Force film Fox are planning, or even her own spinoff. With that in mind, getting a young and in-demand performer would be a wise choice to help anchor any future films.

Meanwhile, we know Daredevil architect Drew Goddard has joined the film to help flesh out the script. His involvement will likely only help right the ship given how rocky things have been following the departure of original director Tim Miller. We also learned that Patrick Stweart’s retirment from the X-Men universe may not be permanent, so long as he can play Professor X in an upcoming Deadpool film. Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, has already said Cable and Domino will blow people’s minds. The inclusion of Stewart in Deadpool 2 could just leave fans comatose with pure nerd bliss. We’ll bring you more news on Domino and all things Deadpool when they arrive, so stay tuned.
