Though there’s still plenty of time to go see Logan in the theaters one more time, fans of Fox’s X-Men franchise have mostly shifted their focus to next year’s Deadpool 2. After the surprise success of the first film, audiences are eager for the next installment of the Merc with a Mouth’s adventures. Despite a leadership switch-up, the movie still looks to be headed in a solid direction with John Wick co-director David Leitch taking over from Tim Miller. Meanwhile, attention has turned to the new mutants that will be showing up in the sequel.
We’ve known for awhile that both Cable and Domino will be appearing in the movie alongside Deadpool. As such, talk has focused on who will play each character. Two weeks ago, we found out in a rather unorthodox manner that Atlanta star Zazie Beetz will be tackling the role of the lucky mercenary known as Domino. Now fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of who will play Cable, which is rumored to be revealed soon. In the past few months, we’ve heard a lot of reports as to who will be playing the time-travleing mutant. One name that hasn’t emerged until today, however, is Brad Pitt.
Just a few hours ago, Cable concept art popped up online, featuring Pitt as the character. While it’s unknown whether it’s official or simply from a fan, it’s gotten the Internet buzzing. Now, it looks like there’s some weight behind it. Collider is reporting that, according to their sources, Pitt was in contention to play Cable at one point. Given his caliber, Pitt was likely outright offered the role, and was apparently interested. Since then, things have cooled and he seems to have moved on. It is an intriguing proposition, however, and one that will likely interest Deadpool fans.
Outside of Pitt, Michael Shannon has moved to the front of the pack for Cable hopefuls. Like Pitt, Shannon has even been given the Cable fan art treatment. While superhero roles are always hotly contested these days given the lucrative nature of a hit franchise, Cable in Deadpool 2 may be one of the more in-demand roles in Hollywood in general right now. Just about every actor who roughly fits the bill for the mutant has been floated as a option, and it’s hard to argue with the quality of any of them.
On top of popular characters like Domino and Cable, the team behind Deadpool 2 have promised us the movie will feature plenty of obscure mutants from the comics. Considering Negasonic Teenage Warhead was included in the first film – and is set to return in Deadpool 2 – we’re inclined to believe them. As the X-Men universe continues to grow on the big and small screen, it’s certainly exciting imaging which deep cuts from the comics will pop up in live-action.
