While he may not be a household name like his DC Universe contemporaries such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, Deadman is getting a shot at stardom in a new series from Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.

Deadman concerns the story of circus trapeze artist Boston Brand who actually performed under the name Deadman – in his now patented red jumpsuit and white make-up. Brand’s story truly begins after his life is taken from him while performing by a mysterious attacker known only as the Hook. Trapped in spirit form, Brand is given the ability to possess the bodies of the living by the (fictional) Hindu goddess Rama Kushna – so that he may walk the earth to solve the mystery of, and avenge, his untimely death.

As far as comic book characters go, Deadman‘s synopsis alone reads like it’s being pitched as a television series, so prepping the living-impaired superhero for the small screen likely came easy to supernatural aficionado Eric Kripke.

Kripke’s success with Supernatural and obvious talent for crafting stories with a horror/supernatural element have made him something of an up-and-comer with Warner Bros. In addition to Deadman and his continued work on Supernatural, Kripke is also poised to write and direct his first feature film – Haunted.

Kripke’s development deal happened to coincide with The CW’s plans to once again reach into the deep well that is the Warner Bros. owned DC Comics universe.

Last month, CW president Mark Pedowitz stated as much: “We’re looking next year to do a superhero show if the right superhero comes to be.”

Looks like that hero is Deadman.

Can 'Deadman' fill the 'Smallville' superhero void?

Not long ago, the Deadman property was one of many projects to be adapted into a feature film by visionary filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. Sadly, with a dance card as full as his, the director had to move on in order to continue work on his upcoming Pacific Rim and hopefully score a greenlight for the ever-elusive adaptation of At The Mountains of Madness. While it’s unfortunate when Del Toro passes on comic book material that seems to be right up his alley, the director is continuing his work on Marvel’s Incredible Hulk series for ABC.

Truthfully, having Kripke develop Deadman into an ongoing television series is probably the best scenario for the character. After serving up this summer’s disappointing Green Lantern – a heavy hitter in the DC Comics universe – Warner Bros. may have come to the realization that even popular comic characters can sometimes be a tough sell, and the small screen may be better suited for lesser-known characters like Deadman.

Recently, Deadman played a large role in the Green Lantern-centric maxi-series ‘Brightest Day’ – written by Geoff Johns, current Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, and occasional Smallville scribe. Johns’ efforts to elevate the character seem to have paid off. In addition to the proposed television series, Deadman has a new ongoing comic series set to launch with the reboot of the DC Universe next month. Perhaps Johns’ devotion to the character means we will be seeing some Geoff Johns-written episodes should Deadman make it to series.

If all goes well, fans can expect Deadman to hit The CW in the fall of 2012.

  1. Whatever happened to “The Raven” series!? I would of loved to see that! Could’ve been like a dark Buffy.

    • Sorry Stuart, we haven’t heard anything since The CW ordered a script from Diego Gutierrez late last year. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but it’s not particularly promising, either.

  2. As if the Green Lantern movie wasn’t bad enough, now another of my favorite comic characters since childhood is set to be desecrated. On freakin’ CW, no less. Hope it doesn’t get picked up.

  3. I like Eric Kripke’s work enough to check it out, if it gets picked up. I wonder if James Marsters is busy after his Supernatural guest role.

    • Gooooooood call

  4. I’M IN.

  5. yes!! there needs to be another super hero show!!

  6. I am defiently in if this get a greenlight. It is an intriquing charcter and story indeed.

  7. Deadman is an interesting character. I’ve always enjoyed his stories. I’ll be curious to see how the handle the costume.

  8. Why not go darker and maybe funnier…Do a seires on “Spawn” That would be a great follow to Supernatural….They’re dealing with heaven and hell anyway so the Spawn of Satan (Though a rebel….He’s not evil) would be a prefect fit….I wonder if aonyone considered it before this….I have both movies (The animated was better), but haven’t seen them for a long time…..But finding someone to do the comic relief that Leguzamo did would make it that great mix Supernatural has. Sometimes it goes really dark, but then they’ll come up with stuff that just about knocks me out of the chair it’s so damn funny…..I mean for a big bad scare show they’re sometimes the best sitcom around…..It’ll be a damn shame when they finally bow out, but they’re kind of running up against a wall stories wise….I mean when you move from battling regular deamons to Satan and now maybe God…..It’s kind of hard to top that….

  9. Hope this makes it to the small screen, but just one correction:he wasn’t wearing white face make-up, it was a mask.

  10. i really love u
hope to meet u dean and sam

  11. i really like to see u
i’m very far from u but it is one of my wishes to meet u
i hope my wishes came true

  12. please don’t stop producing
    love u sam and dean

  13. So he will be a teen surfer that dies and then inhabits teen bodies to help them get over issues like who to take to a dance, what to wear at graduation, acne problems, teen pregnency…..

    :D

  14. Sad thing is you are probably heading down the same road they are Aknot. I’m sure they’ll aim it at teens instead of the adult audiences. Just keep the costume!

    • ;) when I hear WB/CW that is all I can think of.

  15. I think you guys are thinking of Marvel not WB

  16. Just do Secret Six and stop your nagging

  17. Forget them do supergirl

  18. Wonder Woman.

  19. Honestly eric you should do a justice league series. You can build your characters on the show and when plots thicken make a big movie. You already have green lantern superman(tom welling) not the new one cause that’s gonna fail. And you have green arrow batman and so on. Marvel makes bad movies then puts them together to make one big one. Why not continue smallvilles story then add too it and make your movies. You already have a huge following. If gren lantern was on tv in a show or as a reappearing character it would’ve done better the movie was good just the script sucked and it was only an hour fortyfive mins long when it should’ve been two and a half. And for supernatural add some more permanant characters and go eleven seasons with it. Its too good to end……

  20. Oh how about makeing a batman series call it….wait for it….wait for it……..GOTHAM KNIGHTS. Skip right to the parts where characters get introduced. We all know the story of the bat why not do that smallville lasted a great 10 years and need more special effects. Batman won’t need half as much it would be great for when they reboot batman then this way we won’t have to waste a movie or two on how he became who he is….look at this superman reboot…..new outfit…..REALLY REALLY REEEAALLY!! That’s what I wanna see GOTHAM KNIGHTS!s it would be ….AWESOME!!
