When it was announced on April Fool’s Day that Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig would star in an honest-to-goodness Lifetime movie titled A Deadly Adoption, a lot of people just assumed it was one big joke. And while it may end up being a joke, it very clearly wasn’t an April Fool’s joke, as the first trailer for the movie (above) recently debuted.
The story – which seemingly takes its cues from the many, many Lifetime thrillers that have been produced over the years (The Last Trimester, in particular) – follows a successful couple (Ferrell and Wiig) who take in a young woman (Jessica Lowndes) during the last few months of her pregnancy in hopes of adopting her unborn child. At some point, things obviously turn a bit…deadly, as the title and the trailer imply.
While it’s obvious that this movie is something of a sendup of Lifetime movies generally – just by virtue of its very existence – it’s not clear how much of a parody it’ll end up being. The joke could just be how seriously Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig take their roles. And indeed, besides seeing Ferrell and Wiig in ridiculous roles typically reserved for C and D-listers, there’s nothing in the above trailer that you wouldn’t see in an actual Lifetime movie.
The movie’s being directed by Rachel Goldberg – who’s primarily known for making hokey ripoffs for The Asylum and Funny or Die shorts – and produced by Adam McKay’s production company, which has produced Anchorman 2, Eastbound and Down, Step Brothers, and more. So really, in terms of how “funny” it’ll end up being, it could go either way.
When word leaked to the press that this movie was really happening, Will Ferrell released the following statement (courtesy of Variety):
“We are deeply disappointed that our planned top-secret project was made public, Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forgo the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film.”
Was this statement just another part of the joke, or did Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig really attempt to scrap the whole thing? Your guess is as good as ours. One thing’s for sure, though – A Deadly Adoption is a real movie, and it’s really coming out this month.

A Deadly Adoption – which is supposedly inspired by a true story (probably in the same way Fargo was) – premieres June 20th, 2015 on Lifetime.
