Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a movie that is worth watching just for the effects, but succeeds on many levels beyond that. With a significant chunk of the story told with no dialogue at all, the film graduates from a story about humans to a story about Caesar (Andy Serkis) and other intelligent apes, effectively foreshadowing the fate of planet Earth as seen in the 1968 film Planet of the Apes.

Matt Reeves' sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set ten years after the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with Caesar now a family man (sort of) with a wife (Judy Greer) and child as well as a fledgling ape nation looking to him for guidance, which means there's potential to spend a lot more time with the ape characters this time around.

Now it seems that there might not be too much longer to wait before we get a look at the older Caesar, not to mention the new human characters played by Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke. Coming Soon reports that the trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has now been given a rating and "should be coming soon." The film isn't out until next summer, but it would make sense to start building hype for it during the very busy box office month of December, which means that we'll likely be seeing Caesar on the big screen once again before the month is out.

Performance capture for 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'

Of course, this won't be the first time that footage from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been viewed by the public eye. Those who were in attendance at Comic-Con this year may have seen the teaser that was shown there, featuring a war-painted Caesar meeting with members of the dwindling human race. The Simian Flu - as the laboratory-cooked virus that was unleashed upon the world has been dubbed - has left humanity fighting to survive in a post-civilization world, alongside the rising nation of apes led by Caesar.

If the first full trailer is ready to go then chances are very good that it will debut before The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug later this month. Peter Jackson's fantasy adventure is already set to herald the arrival of trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi Interstellar, making it an ideal choice to ensure that the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer reaches a wide audience of fantasy and sci-fi fans. If this is the case, then The Desolation of Smaug might be worth seeing for the trailers alone.
