Casting rumors for the sixth Fast and the Furious flick (a.k.a. Fast Six) have been coming... well, fast and furious over the past week. While stories about pop star-turned actress Rihanna joining the franchise seem unlikely, recent news pegging Luke Evans as possibly playing the film's villain are more substantial. Similarly, series alum Michelle Rodriguez is confirmed to return, while MMA expert Gina Carano appears to also be a lock.

The latest big name, said to be in the running to sign on for the sixth installment in the street racing movie series, is fan-fave Scotsman David Tennant. However, the Doctor Who alum and Fright Night star is far from being "officially in negotiations" right now; rather, Tennant has supposedly chatted casually with director Justin Lin about the idea of the former appearing in the followup to last year's lucrative Fast Five.

According to Latino Review's El Mayimbe (who is generally a reliable source of information), Lin and Tennant have held a series of Skype conversations about the latter coming aboard for Fast and the Furious 6. Whether Tennant's character in the film would be allied with Fed Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) or Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) - or if the actor is in the running for the same part as Evans - that is currently unclear.

It's certainly possible that Tennant, Evans and Jason Statham have all been (or currently are) candidates to play some sort of "generic European" baddie in the sixth Fast and the Furious flick. Principal photography on the project is slated to get underway overseas (no pun) sometime next month, so we shouldn't have to wait too long for an answer (if only a partial one).

Both Evans and Tennant would be welcome additions to the diverse Fast and the Furious core acting crew; still, if it's a choice between one or the other, most film geeks are likely to favor the latter. Their potential involvement alone is yet another good sign that this new installment aims to please the series' fanbase by adding more popular stars to the mix - while serving up even more (greater?) adrenaline-fueled thrills and spectacle.

Fast and the Furious 6/Fast Six races into theaters around the U.S. on May 24th, 2013.
