[Update 2: Now we're hearing Goyer AND Jonah Nolan are involved!]

[Update: Now AICN is weighing with more details on the Goyer/Supes situation!]

Wow, not a day after I get done writing a comprehensive guide on how to reboot the Superman franchise, do our friends over at Latino Review come with the exclusive word that David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) is going to be writing the Superman reboot, which apparently be titled The Man of Steel.

So what will this Superman reboot be about? Who will the villains be? Where will it fit into the continuity of the films? And who will play Supes? The answers await…

According to Latino Review‘s source, Pinche Taco, these are the early details:

  1. Thomas Tull, the head of Legendary [Pictures], got tired of all the discussion and decided…let’s do it.  So he went to Goyer and Goyer had an idea that actually takes the movies back to the John Byrne incarnation.  Modern.  Believable.  FUN!  So Tull got Goyer hired.
  2. The film will not be called Superman and will be called THE MAN OF STEEL.
  3. Brandon Routh will not star in the film.
  4. Nic Cage will NOT star in the fllm (lol)
  5. Bryan Singer is not expected to direct.

I can tell you that Goyer’s story involves Luthor and Brainiac.  It is NOT an origin and assumes audiences already know about Lois, Clark, Jimmy and Perry.  I know the Daily Planet is struggling due to the internet.  And I know it sets up a huge Kryptonian mythology.

Head over to Latino Review for the full word on Pinche’s scoop!

Now, a couple of things to talk about regarding this Superman reboot news:

  • For those wondering about Goyer’s rumored work, prepping Batman 3 for Chris Nolan – Goyer is the story writer for Nolan’s Batman films, not the screenplay writer. Once he comes up with the general story idea it’s passed off to Nolan and his brother Jonathan for script work (at least Batman Begins and Dark Knight worked that way).
  • For those wondering about Goyer’s position showrunning and writing ABC’s FlashFoward: Goyer has left the series to once again focus on his screen writing work (Batman 3 and Man of Steel?).
  • We know that DC Entertainment has been looking to get another Supes film into production and that it would be some sort of reboot to the franchise.

All of these peripheral bits add up to a strong possibility that Latino Review‘s source is on the money. We’ll see how the news pans out in the next few days, when there are sure to be confirmations (or denials) from the DCE camp.

Goyer David Goyer Writing Superman Reboot: Man of Steel? [Re Updated]Goyer

Update: Well that didn’t take long! AICN is reporting that Pinche Taco might have gotten a bit ahead of himself while breaking this Superman reboot scoop. Here’s Harry Knowles take on the situation:

Hey folks, Harry here… So just a while ago I just got off the phone with Thomas Tull at Legendary Pictures who told me that the story that appeared over on LATINO REVIEW just frankly isn’t true. Tull has not unilaterally hired Goyer to come in and write the new SUPERMAN. He loves Goyer, but frankly – the project isn’t at the Script stage yet. Seems Nolan is still hatching some ideas. But he just wanted me to pass on that they have the highest enthusiasm for this project, but the story on Latino just isn’t accurate. I’ll see what more I can find out, but as of right now, there really isn’t anything else to tell.

Now you see why we throw questions marks in these “breaking news” titles – it often takes a while for this stuff to get sorted out.

Still, I’m a bit curious about one aspect of Harry’s report: he claims that Tull is claiming that Nolan is hatching ideas for the next Superman film, but our own Rob Keyes recently posted a report where DCE president Diane Nelson played the “it’s a rumor” card about Nolan even being involved with Superman.

Does that mean that AICN and/or Latino Review are wrong? Hell no! This is Hollywood, the place where news remains “unconfirmed” until the right people get to break it. But until these scoops get confirmed, keep a slightly open mind about the situation…

Oh Hollywood, isn’t it time you started giving straight answers to the people who dig up the scoops?

Update 2: IGN has an exclusive update on the info revealing that in Harry’s AICN exclusive, Tull is downplaying what’s really going on behind the scenes and that not only is Goyer on board for the Superman reboot, but Jonah Nolan is too.

IGN has heard from reliable sources that Tull is downplaying this report. Goyer is in fact on the project, but not only that — his The Dark Knight co-writer Jonah Nolan will also be scripting Superman: The Man of Steel along with him. Nolan’s brother Christopher is expected to only executive-produce, and not direct, the film. That said, he will be “hands-on” as a producer. Since the Superman film is under the gun because of the ongoing legal entanglements involving the property, Warner Bros. wants the pair to get started on their script on the double.

We tell you guys to stay tuned to Screen Rant and boy do we mean it! Check back for more developments with The Man of Steel!

  1. Nuclear Man………..LOL…..What about Superman 2 featuring General Zod?

  2. Nuclear Man………..LOL…..What about Superman 2 featuring General Zod?

    • Ok, time for me to throw my 2 cents in, Superman Returns was a waste of my time and money, it was too slow, not enough action and should have never been made, what I feel they should have done is continue Smallville and I believe they should still do this after this next season, there is so much they can do with all the characters already built in over the years and all of its fans crying for this also.

  3. Why even bring Nic Cage into the disussion about playing Kal-El? Vomit rises to the top of my throat when I even entertain the thought…..

  4. DEATH OF SUPERMAN OR NOTHING AT ALL

  5. Tom Welling should be the first choice because he put in the time.they could easily have flashbacks of his college life transfering to metroplis university.hire the people who did the flash tv show or little britain tv show,to coming up with a convencing muscle suit, and it was an experimental krytonian rehabilitation suit that make you look bigger.that was on record in the fortress, and created by robots in the fortress. martiain manhunter would not hurt either.personally i like tv shows more, when written good.tv shows are weekly.

  6. OK, here we go again:
    1. NO MORE Lex Luthor! Why do always try to find a way to weasel Luthor into the plot?
    2. The Villain should be Doomsday or Gog..hands down. Braniac? ummm he's an alien android who shrinks cities and puts them in bottles….booooooo. Dont do it!
    3. The film should take a darker tone like the Kingdom Come graphic novels. Give Superman a problem that is difficult to solve besides catching Lois lane when she falls off of something.
    4. Leave Brandon Routh alone…he's a good kid. Look at what he had to work with. He would shine with a better script.

    • I agree. I’m actually writing a Superman Doomsday script right now. I’m very good but I have no connections. I’ll try to get it out there if I can.

  7. When I read the Superman: Man of Steel series ? It shows “The Man of Steel” that he is the Eradicator of Planet Krypton. I think in this sequel the Kryptonians of Planet Krypton wear the “Eradicator” outfits like Kal's father and mother Jor-El and Lara in Action Comics Annual #2 in 1989 written by Roger Stern. Roger Stern and John Byrne did a good job writing the “Man of Steel” series that Superman was believe he was “The Only Survivor” to his home planet. It means there's no discussion on General Zod, Supergirl, or anything else.

  8. Thats right… We need the Superman Returns sequels to stay on track.. with Brandon Routh making that choice. Because, he said he decided to stay on position with Bryan Singer.

  9. Maybe in the “Man of Steel” sequel will mention something about The Alien Invader of Krypton called Brainiac taken over the civilization of Kandor hostage and he shrinks the whole city to size in a bottle. This will be awesome in the upcoming sequel. Now, Kandor was being mentioned in the Cary Bates script from the original Superman 5 back then after Superman 4 was done. The Salkinds were having big problems making more Superman films and Christopher Reeve decided to star in 'em before he passed away in 2004 from cancer. In 1996 Tim Burton and other Production Crew Jon Peters decided to direct “The Death and Return of Superman” and he wanted to get Nicolas Cage to play “The Next Man of Steel”. DC Comics reviewed the script from Tim Burton and they rebooted it and they said “Superman looks like “The Dark Knight” with gadget costumes. Tim Burton got fired from the movie and they were saying “Superman Lives” suck and it turn out right. They believe Nicolas Cage cant act and play Superman. Mr. Burton was so goofy.

I rather see Superman fight more villains than Lex Luthor more than what he creates ? Its better off to get “The Man of Steel” in the real world to team up with his cousin from Argo City and fight crime. So he doesnt feel lonely anymore. Supergirl is his cousin from Krypton. She needs a home on earth as Linda Lee. Remember she was called Linda Lee danvers kept as a secret.

  12. I think folk cant wait long enough for superman to hit the cinemas , I think the studios go into panic and frustration to just get together and deliver and that where The problem is the pressure, the time, the deadlines I think.

it must be great weight on these people who are at this minuet possibly writing the superman story for us. I just hope they are reading our blogs and taking note of us the fans, we know our stuff and no matter what we deserve a look in with our points of view from these script writers.

we get our hopes up , we get excited, we cant wait, and the final product then appears in our cinemas and we either enjoy or dont like.

But at the end of the day we the fans, the bloggers deserve to be considered with all our views, there are so many interesting ideas been explored here. And they are all very good, inspiring, and possible in the superman universe but i have great admiration for the comic book fans they really know their stuff better than most,, I would not consider myself an avid comic reader of superman but i would love to read a few i will some time if anyone can help me where to and what to read i would be greatful. I am a big superman fan and i would dearly love to see superman back in our film theaters with a really good meaty story that has allot of depth and layers that is so consistant something that has the Empire strikes back qualities that everyone loves… to beef it up,, keep up the good work film rant. from Dvalley

  13. Yes. ‘Return of Superman’ SUCKED! Smallville sucks the whole Clark and Lois dynamic is snoozeville.

I hoping for an awesome movie, not so sure about Lex Luthor movies with him as the villain are getting old. Also Lois Lane falling off a building and superman catching her or her not telling the difference between Clark with the glasses and superman without Zzzzzzzz… might as well fall asleep to Smallville.

Hope they choose a good Clark Kent!

  14. The Superman costume from the first four Superman films was supposed to be used in Superman Returns so for god’s sake use it in Superman: The Man Of Steel with the late Christopher Reeve’s eldest son Matthew portraying the title role with Michelle Rodriguez Omid Dijalli Roger Moore Seth Green and Ben Stiller portraying Lois Lane Lex Luthor Perry White Jimmy Olsen and Braniac but with used footage of the late Marlon Brando as Jor-El and Susannah York as Lara.

  15. I just hope he doesn’t fly. Leaps in a single bound. He can jump not fly. Stick with story. The real story.

    • Don’t be silly he’s been flying for 60 years, he only leaps in the radio and tv versions

  16. I like the idea of the 5 years that superman was away in superman returns, could get a couple of movies out of that.

  17. Brandon Routh did an awesome portrayal of Superman in the style of Christopher Reeve. He put alot of work into honoring Christopher Reeve’s Supermanisms, humor and even his voice was perfect. He was amazing and received little credit for it. Kate Bosworth got way too much positive feedback for her acting and looked nothing and acted nothing like Lois in the original Superman movies. Parker Posey would have made a better Lois Lane. She has that quirky vib like Margot Kidder had. Why Parker was cast as Lex’s girlfriend is beyond me. Kevin Spacey made an amazing Lex Luthor and the dynamic between Kevin and Brandon was perfect.

Keep Brandon Routh on in the next film.
