David Goyer Talks Blade 4

Published 5 years ago by , Updated September 1st, 2014 at 7:45 am,

Just over a month ago we talked about the future of the Blade franchise and at the time, it seemed that Stephen Dorff may help guide the series in a different direction with a trilogy of new movies set before the events of the first Blade.

It of course would star Dorff as the bad-ass vampire, Deacon Frost. Stephen Norrington, director of the first Blade, said that he’d be back to work on these prequels after he’s done working on the remake of The Crow and he confirmed that it would be Frost’s story but that it would be linked heavily with the existing movies.

Today we have some more tidbits about the next Blade film from another integral man behind the trilogy, David Goyer.

MTV News spoke with David Goyer, writer of The Dark Knight, and he revealed that there’s been talk of the next Blade film at New Line Cinema, confirming that “there’s been murmurings” about the next Blade feature film project.

He didn’t specify any details, so the talk is likely about the Deacon Frost-centered movies we heard about earlier.

However, I find it a difficult to think of a Blade spinoff without any appearance of the vampire hunter in it. I don’t think Wesley Snipes is too busy at the moment so I could see him having some kind of a role in it, perhaps causing problems for Frost behind the scenes since he’s pretty famous amongst vampires he’s not killed yet.

The other option is to re-cast but since this is within continuity and focused on Frost, that wouldn’t be necessary or a good idea. Although Snipes’ recent years have been riddled with legal issues and behind-the-scenes problems, I still would enjoy watching him convert vampires to ash. Maybe he could cameo in the next Twilight film…

Goyer had this to say about the current state of the franchise:

“I think when you revisit these characters, the question is, how long should they stay off the shelf?… When we did ‘Batman Begins,’ he’d been off the shelf for about eight years. It hasn’t been eight years yet for Blade. I think usually if you give them a little breathing room between iterations, it’s better.”

Distancing themselves from the last remnants of the Blade franchise as it was would be wise. Blade: Trinity was not well received, nor was the short-lived Blade television series on Spike TV that Goyer helped produce and write the pilot for.

Stay tuned for more on Blade from Screen Rant as we find it and look for Goyer’s latest work in the sweet-looking upcoming series, Flash Forward.

What do you expect of the next Blade film?

  1. WE NEED SNIPES!!!!!

    SCREW DEACON FROST!

BE CREATIVE WITH THE STORY DAVID S. G!!!

    NEED FRESH IDEAS!!!!

STOP STOP RECYCLING OLD STORIES TO MAKE FAST BUCK!!!!

  2. David S. G IS A RACIST PUNK WHO DIDN’T AGREE WITH EXECUTIVES TO GIVE SNIPES HIS PRODUCER RIGHTS ON BLADE TRINITY. INSTEAD TO GIVE RYAN REYNOLDS AND THAT OTHER CHICK MORE SCREEN TIME THAN SNIPES!!. THATS WHY BLADE TRINITY FLOPPED.

IT’S ABOIUT BLADE!! NOT REYNOLDS AND THE OTHER CHICK.

    • I think a reboot of Blade should start with a cameo of him in the next Spiderman movie

  3. I don’t get all this talk about doing a Deacon Frost spin off? Was he really an interesting enough of a character to warrant a whole new series of films centered around him? Personally I could care less about that character beyond his involvement as a villain in the first film. I mean that would be like doing a spin off series from Die Hard about Hans Gruber. Yeah he was a cool villain but we don’t really want to see a film totally about him. That goes for any other action villain. Villains exist as a nemesis to the hero and if the hero is no longer involved then who really cares? I think all this talk is really leading the series in a very wrong and uninteresting direction. This is the Blade series right? So why don’t we just stick with Blade? Get your act together guys and deliver what the fans of the franchise really want.

  4. They need to go back to the original plan that was going to be Blade Trinity. Set it in the future and show the world being controlled by the vampires, either incognito or straight up. Then do the resistance story, and finding Blade and seeing what he’s been up to. This could be stretched into a three part story, new franchise of sorts.

  5. @Mike Thompson

LOL, that movie is coming soon – it’s called “Daybreakers.” :-)

    Vic

  6. @Vic

Daybreakers STOLE the plot of Blade III’s “vampire final solution” (which was cut from BLADE I).

  7. @Drac

I’ve only ever seen Blade 3 once and it was a long time ago so I don’t recall the plot.

  8. I cant believe you thought blade trinity was a step up from blade 2. Blade trinity sucked major ass!!!!!!

  9. I actually enjoyed Trinity, to an extent, I thought Dominic Purcell was great as Drake and I would really like to see them bring him back….come on you can't kill Dracula, haul is ass back and make another movie. Drop Beal and Reynolds, as funny as King was in the movie, and lets see Snipes whup some more ass.

  10. snipes IS Blade no snipes no blade… frost is cool but i cant imagine him being as interesting without blade kicking his ass

  11. Yeah Snipes is Blade The Daywalker however I would like FIRST Goyer not direct or even write it. SECOND Blade should be free from the limitations of Vampires to include all demonic creatures. By simple logic if Vampires exist that means also Zombies, Harpies, Ghouls, Werewolves, Gargoyles, Succubus and Demons could also exist.

THIRD is that I'm NOT talking about all these existing in one movie or having a completely CG enemies. Image in Blade's world these creatures come about in demonic possession in humans. Yeah know fight some regular grunts then get back to terror, action and suspense. Just image wondering who is the next human to horrifically burst into some wicked creature. Grandma in a Nursing Home? Young couple getting married in Vegas? A school teacher? A Plumber? Olympic Female Gymnast? Or even Gamestop employee?

  12. snipes was the man and i would love to see him again in yet another blade movie provided is nothing like trinity! however if anyone would be an incredible blade character with the looks and skills of snipes and probably better younger stronger it would be michael jai white from spawn!! this guy has the complete full package to be blade and then some!!!!!!

  15. I think that a fourth installment of the Blade series should include a worthy foe from in the vampire nation as it did in Blade 2. The fight scenes between Blade and Jared Nomek were some of favorite fight scenes ever. Not to mention Blade's demeanor and dialogue were far more fitting of his character in Blade and Blade 2 than in Trinity. I would enjoy a prequel about Frost or even something happening after Trinity with vampires and werewolves. Michael Morbius would be an awesome enemy for Blade and should have already been in the series in more than a deleted scene. As far as a replacement for Wesley Snipes as Blade goes , there is only one man who could pull off the look and phsyical ability and that is none other than Michael Jai White who played Spawn in the Spawn movie. If Michael Jai White would have played Blade in the SPIKE TV show instead of Sticky Fingaz I think it would have been alot more successful or at least more enjoyable.

  16. I personally liked all 3 of the blades, i can’t see how people can b**** about a perfectly good film? They obv had to show what was happening to the other two people who were working with blade in the 3rd one because they were his partners… you can’t say yeh blade i’m your team mate and not actually show any fighting scenes of that person. You all need to chill out a bit.

  17. Oh and personally i reckon they should maybe bring a bit more than just vampires in to it… maybe some kind of new super human thing that will give blade more of a hard time.

  18. I agree with filmguy and fearls. Both those dudes have it figured! They should not make a prequel series based on Frost! Like filmguy said, that’s like doing a Die Hard movie based on Hans Gruber. You don’t revisit the villains the hero has already defeated. The story is about BLADE it has nothing to do with Frost. He was just a villain. And some of fearlis idea’s were good too. Like since all the vamps are dead, they could fight Were wolves. Or a hybrid vampire that survived the onslaught in the 2nd movie, and comes back as something different. Maybe Blade could go around killing all the familiars, just for betraying man kind and siding with the vampires. Maybe they could do a movie cross over where Blade Meets Selene from Underworld. Or my favorite, Blade rocks up in the next twilight movie and kills every last teenage fag there is.

  19. I think they should do another blade movie, but starring Mr. Snipes. He actually fits the character (blade). He makes Blade look cool and bad ass. I think if they don’t have any ideas for the next film, they should take in suggestions from what people want to see. But that would be tons of mail. ;p but it will give an idea of what to film. yep. I saw the first 2 movies and the third one was a little crappy. I thought they were trying to make it comical more than an action film. I also saw the Blade series. I hated it when, they showed Indian/Native Americans as vampires. I’m Indian myself, but i thought we left that to the Europeans. So, I hope they don’t make there next film portraying Indian/Native Americans as vampires. Otherwise, i would love to see a new Blade movie. Blade was my favorite and first movie of vampires i saw. I hope they make one soon. ;D Peace!
P.S. I can’t picture Blade being in a Twilight film. He’s better off making a Blade series.

  20. Just keep Ryan Reynolds out of it! Who needs that poser jackin’ up a good thing again.

  21. I want Draculas and other creatures in the movie.

  22. I feel if Westley Snipes isnt in the movie then its not gonna be right . You cant change the main character and the one everyone loves to see kickass ! Luv u Westley

  23. I am totally with the rest and feel like if it is not Snipes, it is nothing.
I own all of the Blade movies and in my opinion they would be nothing without him. I do like the idea of going in a little different direction like some of the others have said here. I would also like to see a little more money spent on the movie to make it even better. Another idea is to have Snipes take on an apprentice so that the Blade series can continue into the future with someone that people can recognize from a previous Blade appearance. It has to be a great actor that is not affiliated with other movie characters so as not to be remembered as “That Guy” from that other movie. Please, please, come up with something creative not Cheesy. Just one mans opinion. Thanks : )

    • That would be great if a creative director would somehow fit an apprentice into the picture, that would extend Blade long after he is gone, great idea man.

  24. Without Snipes, Blade isn’t Blade, Snipes embodies Blade, it would be extremely difficult to match him, as I’m hoping Marvel doesn’t replace him, they have been none for making mistakes like replacing Edward Norton.

  25. Sooner Or Later the THIRST AlWAYS WINS!

  26. No snipes no blade, wont waste my money until it was a dollar night to watch it without him

  27. If no WESLEY SNIPES, no body is going to watch it. I am def. not going to waste my time. I bought the the dvd with all 4 movies blade, blade 2, blade trinity and then blade house of chithon..VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THAT…because he was not in it .. It goes for every remake if your not going to use the original cast, DONT DO IT AT ALL…<3
