Just last week we reported that David Fincher will direct the American remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.  Well, we’ve now learned that Fincher has an option to direct the film version of its sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire,f as well.

Fincher is reportedly keen to take on The Girl Who Played With Fire, so much so that he may start shooting it right after his completion of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  He’s already guaranteed payment for the film, so it’d make little sense for him NOT to direct it – assuming that The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is successful enough to warrant a cinematic sequel.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo revolves around an ex-journalist/private investigator and a technowiz punk as they investigate the brutal murder of the niece of a Swedish entrepreneur.  The Girl Who Played With Fire follows the pair into similarly macabre territory, as they investigate Sweden’s sex trafficking industry whilst the technowiz punk struggles to clear her name after she is accused of murdering three people in connection to the case.

Like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire sounds like ripe dark material for Fincher to tackle.  Given his reputation as a meticulous filmmaker, Fincher is unlikely to rush Girl Who Played With Fire into production or attempt to shoot it back-to-back with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  Again, assuming Dragon Tattoo is a critical and financial success, I see no reason why Sony Pictures wouldn’t welcome Fincher back for the sequel.

While Swedish film versions of the entire Millennium trilogy (including the third book, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest) have already been released and were hits in their home country, screenwriter Steve Zaillian has already stated that he will not view the Swedish film version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and that his adaptation will be of the original novel only.  Chances are that Fincher will follow suit and give us his own unique take on both The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire.

In the meantime, Fincher will finish up and release his Facebook origin film,  The Social Network, on October 15, 2010.  Look for him to begin production on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo this fall and hopefully The Girl Who Played With Fire soon thereafter.

  1. Hello, My daughter, Danielle Eckstein wrote and recorded a song with her band “ladyfish” called “Play With Fire.” (This song, and Danni were actually used in a Florida state-wide Bealls department store television commercial I think it would be perfect for your movie. She is a beautiful 19 year old woman and the song is perfect for the film. Her father and I are really into the whole trilogy so it would be great if we could be part of this awesome story.

You can reach me at 904-333-1145. I would like to send you the song and pictures of my daughter. I will guarentee you will be impressed! Please tell me what is the best e-mail or address to send the information to.

  2. , Nancy Eckstein again. You can see Danni’s work by going to youtube and looking for “Play With Fire” or Bealls Commercial. Danni and her band “Ladyfish” performed their original material in a state-wide Bealls television commercial when she was only 15. “Ladyfish” went on to have great success. They opened for Avril Lavigne. They were voted Jacksonville’s favorite band by Folio magazine in 2009. Danni was offered a recording contract in 2009 by Justin Siegel of Beverly Hills but it felll through. There is also a music video on youtube called “Situation Tragedy” which was a later work. You can also look on her facebook at Danni Eckstein or call me at 904-333-1145 or e-mail me at nancyeckstein@me.com. Danni is an EXTREMELY beautiful girl who also has musical ability. This is not just her mother talking. You will see and possibly discover the next big star if you take the time to look. She also has much acting experience if you need her to do that. Trust me on this one. It will be worth it to check her and her music out. I was excited to see the potential director for this fil m is from Denver as Danni is going to school in Boulder Colorado. Please contact me if you have any interest!
