Fans of The X-Files have been discussing a possible third film in the science fiction series since the release of last year’s much-maligned I Want To Believe. While no concrete news has yet been released, it would appear that all of the principals are on board to return for a third big-screen X-Files adventure.
The latest person to talk up X-Files 3 is Fox Mulder himself – David Duchovny.
Duchovny recently spoke with The Daily Beast and stated that (like most fans) he would like the next film to tackle the 2012 mythology within the hit show.

Duchovny said:
“As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it.”
The Californication star also defended the last film and the final seasons of the hit show (which some believe to be lacking). Duchovny stated:
“I was happy with it… I have nothing but respect for [X-Files creator] Chris Carter and the writing staff.”
While the last film wasn’t a huge critical success (although I quite liked it), it did make enough coin at the box office to warrant a sequel – $68 million from a $30 million budget, which doesn’t factor in television sales and DVD revenue.
While nothing is set in stone yet, there have been rumblings that Mulder and Scully will turn on their flashlights for another spooky mystery. In the past, Duchovny’s co-star Gillian Anderson has also said that she’d be up to return to the hugely successful franchise.

There have been recent rumors that 20th Century Fox is planning to bring X-Files 3 to the screen without the help of creator Chris Carter; there have also been certain whispers that a film version of Carter’s Millennium might also be on the way, albiet in an independent form (read: without Carter’s involvement ).
Screen Rant will keep you posted on all X-Files developments when we get them.

I actually liked I want to believe but as a pretty good TV episode, was a story about faith. Unfortunately not enough meat for a Big Screen outing. This next one should be about the Alien Invasion of 2012. I hope they bring back a clone of Cigarette Smoking Man
Hudson
I can’t believe you just started watching them. That’s awesome though. I wish I could start over watching them as if I had never seen them before.
Lord Garth
I can’t remember, did the smoking man die?
The last movie was a slap in the face to all x-files fans. So, yeah, i’m skipping the next slap.
The problem with I Want to Believe was two-fold. One, like Lord Garth says, there just wasn’t enough story to warrant a full length movie, but my major problem with it was that it just wasn’t weird enough to be X-Files.
The smoking man dies in the final episode, blown to bits by rocket fire from a black ops helicopter. I have to admit, although the second movie wasn’t perfect, I really enjoyed it. The same way I enjoyed Indy 4, I can watch a mediocre film as long as the characters are strong enough. Mulder and Scully are two of the greatest tv characters of all time.
” I want to believe “…..again!
It would be funny if Fox did bring out an X-files movie without Carter and it came up highly successful. Reignition of an even better show from a franchise is possible, we’ve seen it before.
hey M-Cat
i had a problem with the first episode i watched. i think it was a 2 part episode or some thing which is a problem because im watching it on tv so i dont get to finish watcing episodes. So im wondering if there are 2 or more part episodes, and how many there are. If there is a lot is there a legall website i can go to, to watch the episodes
hud
im not sure but maybe check the hulu website. i think that’s what it’s called. if not, the only way is by dvd. and yes, many episodes are 1 or 2 parts. there are a couple that run 3 or more parts as well. the best way to figure it out is to go to any tv show website like zap2it.com or something like that to get the names of the episodes. or if you have dvr or tivo you can record episodes right from the sy/fy channel. they play episodes every night at 2am and they go in succession.
If Chris Carter isn’t brought back ( I think he will be involved to some extent) then I hope that an X-Files alum will, be it James Wong/Glen Morgan or Rob Bowman (who also directed the first film)
@Josh Rose, not weird enough?
Did you miss that part when they transplanted the head of that girl onto the other freaked out looking torso?
I’m ready for another slap of X-Files.
I would love to see them go back to the conspiracy. I personally didn’t enjoy “believe” because for such a build up (in my mind after so many years and by the previews), it was a pretty big let down, being that it was just an extended episode. While i’d be thrilled to see Carter come back to be a part of it, i think the rest of the cast has had plenty of experience with the show and films and could probably get along fine without him. Duchovny’s directed a number of episodes himself and could probably do a decent job.
i think the thing that bothered me most about the last film was the interaction between Mulder and Scully. It was very bitter and didn’t seem to have that love they had for each other in the show. I’d like to see them fix that in the next film.
I wasn’t aware that Californication was done. Is there a reason it was cancelled/ended?
And as for Millennium, that’d be a dream to see, again, even without Carter.
You hit on a great topic here Niall.
BTW, could you have found a worse picture of David? He looks pissed!
Californication isn’t cancled…
I don’t know how you got that one???
Californication hasnt been cancelled, it has already been renewed for a forth season because it got such high ratings. It is the best show on television at the moment without a doubt.
A real X-Philer knows that 2012 is the set date for colonization to begin. Its the date set back in the fifties in the mythology when the aliens first landed and the ‘men in black’ of the government agreed to disclose their arrival in exchange for their own freedom when the aliens took over the planet.
And then the alien rebels came in, and ‘the group’ tried to create a human/alien hybrid, and the whole mulder abduction/dying resurrection thing. The series got a little confusing at the end.
But with the final shot of Mulder and Scully in a dark hotel room on the run it seemed like the story had one more chapter to tell. Hopefully it will, because X-Files 2 was decent it wasn’t nearly as good as some of the stand alone X-file episodes that had nothing to do with the government/alien mythology storyline.
So, if that were to be the script centered on colonization in 2012 then I would want to believe in an X-Files 3.
A little closure for X-Files fans would be nice as well, especially after waiting 8 yrs for to see Mulder and Scully again, and that film was the best they could do? Come on.
Its too bad they had blow up the cigarette smoking man at the end of the series though. Hopefully Alex Krychezk will show up!
@Spkeane4
Yep 2012 is the endgame date.
Good assessment however the MIB’s (Smoking man and the Majestic group) were later trying to create an immunity weapon against the aliens but that resulted in disaster. Because of that act, the aliens gave the MIB and all human life the date 2012 as to when they (the alien greys) would release a virus (the black oil) and use humans as a birthing chambers for a new race of hybrid aliens. Mankind would be killed off in the process.
Mulder was abducted later on in the series because he was given an immunity to the Black oil in Russia. Same time as Krycheck. The aliens were experimenting on him to see what made him immune. Scully is also immune at this point, as she was exposed to the virus in “Fight The Future.” She was infected by the bee that stung her…
The second film “I Want to Believe”, dealt with breaking Scully’s final barrier of non believing. Yeah it was kinda slow paced if your coming off “Fight The Future” however the film has an important scene in the final seconds of the credits that real hard core X Files fans will totally get. If you don’t get that scene then your not that big a fan,,, sorry.
I can’t imagine Millennium without Lance Henriksen
790 and jesssaying speak the truth. “The truth is out there”
Thanks Tim C,
(I appreciate your support!)
If Aliens do land in November during a televised football game, hey keep in mind it could all be a hoax. A big holographic load of crap,,,
And if obama publicly meets with aliens and they form some kind of new world alliance,,, run for the hills!!! Cause its all bs.
Real omnipotant alien beings would have nothing to do with our so called leadership establishment. Always remember that!!!!
Seriously,,, (off SR topic)
These next few months are going to rock our foundations…
I think it’s interesting that so much is being said about a 3rd movie now. I hope someone at the X-Files event on November 14 asks the team (Gillian Anderson, Frank Spotnitz, Mitch Pileggi and Rob Bowman will all be there). Are any of you going?
Patricia, where’s that being held?
It’s being held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills. You can find ticket info here: http://www.ibginc.org/tickets.
Patricia if you attend come back and give us a report!
You bet!
People are allowed to submit questions to the panel if they make a small donation even if they can’t be there. So, if you have questions, go to the ticket page and check out the “Miles Adrift” section. http://www.ibginc.org/tickets#miles
The only question I have is, “What’s the statis of the next X-Files film?”
