Marvel's Drax the Destroyer lives for the purpose of killing Thanos. It was Thanos who killed him and his family, after all, before he was resurrected into the living weapon known as Drax. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Drax's origin story was altered significantly by writer and director James Gunn. Dave Bautista's Drax also seeks vengeance for the death of his wife and daughter in the movie but he's after Ronan the Accuser instead, and he's not at all from Earth.

By the end of Guardians of the Galaxy 1, after Ronan (Lee Pace) is defeated, Drax sets his sights on Thanos - nicely setting up Avengers: Infinity War. But one piece is still missing: Drax's daughter. When James Gunn told us while promoting the first movie that he wanted additional female characters on the team for Vol. 2 and later that he cut one of his favorite characters we listed Moondragon as a possibility.

Moondragon is who Drax's daughter, Heather Douglas, became. She survived Thanos' attack as a little girl and Thanos' father brought her to Titan to train, eventually becoming one of Marvel's most powerful telepaths. Given Gunn's focus on the themes of family and father figures in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies thus far, the idea that Drax could have a real daughter is an intriguing one and so we asked Bautista about this during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 press junket.

Dave Bautista as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy

In the comics, Drax's daughter is brought back and becomes Moondragon and a member of the Guardians herself. Should that story play out in the films?

Dave Bautista: Yeah! Of course! I would love to tell more of the backstory of Drax. Whether or not that will happen, I don't know. I don't know if they'll ever really focus on Drax, but I hope so. I think it's a really interesting story.

Bautista was very unsure of his part in the sequel when first seeing the script, telling us it was all jokes and not the "badass" Drax he sees in Marvel Comics. He didn't even find it funny until script reads and rehearsals when he and cast mates couldn't stop laughing and we can see this easily in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 TV spots and trailers.

Since James Gunn is returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and describing it as the end of this iteration of the team and the end of one complete story, perhaps there's hope yet that Drax will find family related by blood.
