Darren Aronofsky May Helm ‘Human Nature’ With George Clooney

Darren Aronofsky could direct Human Nature

Since he vacated the director’s chair on The Wolverine, there’s been some question as to what Darren Aronofsky would instead select as his followup to last winter’s Oscar-winner, Black Swan. It appears the filmmaker has possibly decided to press ahead with Human Nature, a spec script that has been collecting dust for some fifteen years.

Oscar-winning writer/producer Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) is currently working on a budget for the project; meanwhile, George Clooney has reportedly attached himself to star in the film.

Vulture says that, as it stands, Human Nature looks to become Aronofsky’s next directorial effort. The spec script for the film was penned by screenwriter Jeff Welch, whose sole other professional credit is the 2004 TV movie Bet Your Life. However, his screenplay clearly has enough promise to have attracted the likes of Aronofsky and Clooney – not to mention, convince someone like Goldsman that it’s possibly worth investing in.

Human Nature reportedly revolves around a man (Clooney’s would-be role) who is cryogenically frozen for an indefinite amount of time. He eventually awakens in the future to discover that humankind is no longer the dominant species on Earth – and that people are now kept as pets by a new race of creatures.

If that synopsis sounds more than a bit similar to Planet of the Apes – don’t worry, it’s not just you.

It sounds like Human Nature would allow Aronofsky the opportunity to make a dystopian sci-fi feature along the lines of what he probably had in mind back when he was attached to the RoboCop reboot. This new project would also mark his first full-on venture into the realm of science fiction – although there were definitely elements of that genre in Aronofsky’s directorial debut, Pi (and, to a lesser extent, The Fountain).

Clooney is fairly selective about his roles; he tends to only sign on for projects that have awards potential and/or a prestigious director attached. So it’s not all that surprising that he would be interested in a sci-fi drama that revolves around a Kafkaesque scenario – as brought to life by a technically-proficient auteur who knows a thing or two about telling engaging stories that feature characters whose worlds begin to crumble before their very eyes.

While it goes without saying that a lot of fans were excited to see what Aronofsky would deliver with the Wolverine sequel, Human Nature also sounds promising. The latter may not be quite a blockbuster-in-the-making, but it could turn out to be an overall intelligent and entertaining sci-fi flick – assuming that Aronofsky does sign on, that is.

Look to hear more about Human Nature in the future.

  1. Clooney may like this since it fits his brand of politics which he seems to be forcing on people more and more with each movie he is doing lately. He basically does not like the human race and feels we need to be more subserviant to the planet so this is right up his alley.

  2. You had me at “Aronofsky”.

  3. love aronofsky’s workanything he touches is gold, and being a huge sci fi thriller/ monster, killer animals loving fan this sound great. hope he does it and can’t wait to see it.

  4. maybe later on he and hugh can team up for a x-men 4 and 5 film back to back that takes place after last stand.

  5. This sounds like chicken and waffles smoothered with gravy. Basically a winning combination.

  6. I am a fan of Aronofskys work, aside from The Fountain. I liked some of the visuals but I just could not get into the movie. I have really tried liking it and thought maybe if I watched it more it would grow on me. No go, I just could not get into it. I really like the idea of this movie and it does seem like something Aronofsky would be interested in. I hope that everything falls in place but for some reason I was hoping for his next project to be something different. I could all so care less about Clooney, take him or leave him. I all so think that I am the only one who is happy that he is not doing “The Wolverine.” Keep this man away from my comic books. He would warp the source material and make it his own. That is why he is so good at what he does, and I don’t think we need his take on our well solidified characters. His Wolverine would have been as significant to the comic as the original Punisher movie was.

  7. clooney could do with doing something solid..his last few movies, were not exactly wonderful…some good sc fi to remind us that hes an actor, and not a celeb who turns up wearing a tux, shoots off a few one liners….

  8. Damn, I was hoping for another charity Telethon.

Loved the grim dark sad musical performances on the last one.
