‘Breaking Bad’ Star Aaron Paul Approached for ‘The Dark Tower’

The Dark Tower book series is considered Stephen King’s fantasy magnum opus, so it’s no wonder that a film adaptation has been on the table for years now. Problem is, Oscar-winner Ron Howard (long attached to direct and/or produce the project) hasn’t been content to adapt King’s literature into either a Game of Thrones-style epic TV series or a big-budget movie trilogy; he and writer/producer Akiva Goldsman (Winter’s Tale) have wanted to make both, which explains why both Universal and Warner Bros. have balked at the proposed multi-platform endeavor in the past.

Despite issues getting the necessary funding for the proposed Dark Tower cross-platform venture, Howard and producer Brian Grazer have always maintained that the project was never been dead in the water - just (much) slower than expected to make its way down the pipeline into production. In the meantime, it would appear that the filmmakers have been meeting with potential cast members, including one rising star who threw his hat in the ring a while back.

AICN caught up Aaron Paul at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where the actor is promoting his new film Hellion by writer/director Kat Candler, having previously visited the Utah-held festival in 2012 to promote the alcoholism drama Smashed (which he co-headlined). The site’s contributor “Quint” eventually turned his conversation with Paul to Dark Tower, in part because the actor has previously revealed on Twitter – back in Fall 2012 – that he’d like to play the character Eddie Dean in the movie/TV adaptation.

Well, fans aren’t the only ones who like the idea, according to Paul:

“I’ve had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad, naturally), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They’re definitely planning on making [The Dark Tower].”

Paul also re-iterated that Howard and Co.’s plan remains to make a Dark Tower movie trilogy that has “a television element to it,” as was originally proposed. One possibility (and this is pure speculation) is that the TV “element” might be a spinoff series revolving around side characters who’re tangentially related to the main Dark Tower narrative; in other words, a show that is to the trilogy what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is to the Marvel Studios’ film universe, story-wise.

Eddie Dean in Dark Tower, for those unfamiliar, is an ex-heroin addict whose raw talent for gunslinging is shaped by protagonist Roland Deschain – a grizzled warrior and last in the line of gunslingers, who’s on a quest to locate the fabled Dark Tower. Drug problems aren’t the only thing that Eddie shares in common with Paul’s Breaking Bad onscreen persona, Jesse Pinkman; the pair also have troubled pasts and share certain personality traits in common, which is why Paul has long been viewed as a natural fit for the Dean character.

Typecasting concerns aside, Paul reads as a smart choice for reasons that go beyond his compelling screen presence; he’s also looking to further breakout bad (sorry, could resist) in Hollywood soon, with his leading role in the Need for Speed movie this March and supporting turn in Ridley Scott’s Exodus later this year.

Combined, Paul’s current star wattage with that of proposed headliner Russell Crowe as Roland Deschain may not be enough to get Dark Tower green-lit right off the bat, but it would at least help to move the project another step forward. Moreover, with Hollywood’s newfound love affair with building shared universes – whether they are home to superheroes, old-fashioned monsters or citizens of a galaxy far, far away – in full bloom, it seems “now” might be Dark Tower‘s time at last.

  1. I like the Eddie Character choice, how about Kurt Russell as Roland, and I actually thought Halle Berry for Susannah…She can look kinda loony when she needs to. :) I also really want to see what a billybumbler looks like..

  2. Aaron Paul would be great for the Eddie Dean but I vote no on Russell Crowe. Someone more like a Clint Eastwood type would be better. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie.

    • Aaron Paul as Eddie Dean would be perfect! Russell Crowe as Roland would be an abomination. Daniel Craig should definitely be Roland.

      • Oh my god, yes Daniel Craig as Roland!

  3. YES! He is PERFECT for Eddie!
    I can’t wait!! I’m so excited… I love Stephen King!!

    • EU GOSTEI DA IDEIA ,MAS NAÕ VEJO RUSSELL CROWE COMO RONALD DESCHAIN ,APOSTO EM ALGUEM MAIS TIPO CLINT EASTWOOD ,OU DANIEL CRAIG ,QUANDO LI OS LIVROS A PRIMEIRA PESSOA QUE IMAGINEI COMO SUSANNH FOI HALLE BERRY ELA É PERFEITA PARA ESTE PAPEL ,ESTOU LOUCA PARA VER O FILME .

  4. Would love for Aaron Paul to play Eddie Dean, he would nail it!

  5. Aaron doesn’t look like an older vet gunslinger. Russel Crowe as a choice is lame. I read Kurt Russell as being in the comment section, which isn’t bad. How about Timothy Olyphant from Justified? He looks more like the characeter and would be a great choice.

    • I think they should ask Andrew Lincoln, I know he’s already in a show but I think he’d be great.

  6. I would like to see Timothy Olyphant or Andrew Lincoln as Roland, I think either would make a good “Gunslinger”.

  7. Good choice for Eddie Dean, but I reckon Josh Hollaway of Lost fame would be the ideal gunslinger.

  8. Walton Goggins as the man in black…………..for you Justified fans……..

  9. Perfect choice! I am a FANATIC of SK’s work & this is his best EVER! Please don’t let this opportunity slip through your fingers!!!

  10. I always pictured the actor who played ‘Merry’ (Dominic something) in Lord of the Rings as Eddie Dean when I read the books, but Aaron Paul seems like a great choice as well.

    • He played the junkie in Lost.

  11. Aaron would make a good Eddie even though he isn’t physically what I think most people imagined. NOT a fan of Crowe as Roland though… Olyphant or McConaughey would be better and Rosario Dawson as Odetta. Trilogy is a must, but the fantasy worlds need a big screen and big budget to really get it right. A tv feel would minimize a great story.

  12. Paul works for Eddie Dean’s character but Russell Crowe as Roland? No way. That does not fit. Long, tall, aged/a bit grizzled (OK make-up can fix that), actors more like Timothy Olyphant, Kurt Russell, more of a Clint Eastwood type is what we need. Rosario Dawson, Halle Berry – good choices for Odetta. What about Kerry Washington?
I’m just glad to hear the project is still alive!

  13. Oh my gosh! I am freaking out! This is the best news ever!!! I hope he does that role! Also big yes for Russell Crowe too!!!!! I am such a big Stephen king fan! Read all his books and honestly you guys that would be the best pair for this series!!!! Yes yes yes!!!

  14. I love Stephen King books, and have read them all. Some have been made into really good movies and miniseries but The Dark Tower is one I will NOT watch..I prefer to read, re-read, and read yet again this series and use my imagination, which a movie would crush. Sorry, but I will not watch it.

  15. I think Aaron Paul would be awesome as Eddie. While I LOVE Russell Crowe and his acting abilities, I’ve always pictured someone a bit more like Anson Mount (aka Cullen Bohannon on AMC’s Hell on Wheels) as Roland. The geek in me would love to see Firefly’s Gina Torres (Zoe Washburne) as Susannah. I would also like to see Chandler Riggs (Carl from AMC’s The Walking Dead) as Jake. Ooooh…. goosebumps… :)

    • I agree. Anson Mount would play a great Roland. Russel Crow would NOT be a good fit for Roland. And Gina Tores would be a perfect part for Susanah/Odetta.

  16. It should be an epic series. Super high-quality TV is too rare. Even shows with high budgets don’t have the quality component in terms of story-line and acting. And movies with odd fantastic story lines have a way of flopping, am I wrong? But lately, TV series with odd and fantastic story lines are thriving. And I don’t think a two hour movie has ever really done King justice in terms of character and plot complexity. A good 42 minute episode series could though.

  17. Javier Bardem as Roland…and if you want a kick-ass Eddie Dean, look no further than Gideon Emery. He absolutely OWNED a short film version of the classic (and totally unrelated) King story “Survivor Type”, and he looks the part. Gideon = Eddie Dean. Somebody tell Ron Howard! Seriously! TELL RON HOWARD TO GET GIDEON EMERY

  18. Big, odd and fantastic movies have a way of flopping, am I wrong? And I’ve never seen a 2 hour movie (regardless of being part of a series) do King justice for his vast character and plot complexity. Just like a good series, a King book is something you get hooked to, and have to return to over and over again until its done. A movie is just one sit through… hardly any time for someone to pick up subtleties and fall in love with the characters.
Big, odd and fantastic TV series have been thriving lately. Even though so few of them are high quality like Breaking Bad. And the Walking Dead won’t be entertaining for much longer. The Dark Tower is what high quality TV should be turning to once thats over.

  19. I think he would make a perfect Eddie, I really hope they do this. I could see were Russell Crowe would be good but I could really see Andrew Lincoln as Roland.

  20. Aaron Paul’s fine as Eddie, but Russell Crowe as Roland is just a travesty. When I read the books, Jim Caviezel is more a fit to who I see in my head for the gunslinger.

  21. Statham as Roland gets my vote :)

  22. EU GOSTEI DA IDEIA ,MAS NAÕ VEJO RUSSELL CROWE COMO RONALD DESCHAIN ,APOSTO EM ALGUEM MAIS TIPO CLINT EASTWOOD ,OU DANIEL CRAIG ,QUANDO LI OS LIVROS A PRIMEIRA PESSOA QUE IMAGINEI COMO SUSANNH FOI HALLE BERRY ELA É PERFEITA PARA ESTE PAPEL ,ESTOU LOUCA PARA VER O FILME .

  23. Excellent choice for Eddie!!!! I think the best choice for Roland is Mads Mikkelsen!

  24. Russell Crowe is a fine actor, but I’m not picturing him for the part of Roland. Don’t know about his acting abilities, but Clint Eastwood’s son would be a great choice since most readers pictured ole Clint as Roland as they read the books. Viggo Mortensen gets my vote (like I’ve got one). Aaron Paul is perfect for Eddie; Suzannah IS Danai Gurira. Very excited about the movies in Ron Howard’s capable hands and have long wondered if the story would ever make it to the theater!

  25. It was too bad Steve dicked around before finishing it. Roland/Clint could be played by, get this, Joel McHale. You’d have to slap the sarcastic grin off his face with a wet salmon every morning before shooting but I think he could pull it off. He moves like Roland. Calm, confident and full of grace. He owns the spot he’s in. And he has the eyes for it. And the build. As a reader from book one I have laboured over this for many years and, as sacred as the role of Roland is I would trust him to do it right. Comments?

    • That might just be genius. My only concern would be his age, but if they could crinkle him up a bit I think you could be on to something!

      • Sergio had some pretty high powered arc lamps illuminating his cast. Even in the desert. The squint comes naturally. The more I think about it the more I think Joel would be my first choice. This is coming from a hardcore fan. A bad Roland would be a disaster. Let’s not let that happen…

        • And I don’t want to be pushy with suggestions but Jim Carrey could pull off The Man in Black. Very capable of it, actually…

  26. I’m not going to say who should play Roland, but please, for the love of God, NOT Russell Crowe. Just no.

  27. How about Viggo morstien(maybe spelled wrong).the guy from g.i. jane.would be awesome.i am reading The Dark Tower book 5 now and thats who i picture as ROLAND

  28. People keep suggesting Andrew Lincoln or Timothy Olyphant as Roland, which is ridiculous. In the books, Roland is of spanish descent. He’s got dark olive skin, jet black hair, and dark eyes. Their original choice of Javier Bardem (I think that’s how you spell it) was a great choice.

  29. i believe he would be a good choice for eddie. as for roland, viggo mortenson would be a better choice. he has played cowboys before. look at “lord of the rings”, “hidalgo”, “the road”, “appaloosa”. he can pull off the dark hair, blue eyes, sunken features!

    • Kim Coates for the Man in Black. Mads Mikkelsen for Roland. *mic drop*
